Denotation vs.

Connotation
Denotation: the strict, “dictionary” definition of a word.


Connotation: the emotions attached to a word. The emotion can


be either positive or negative.

Ex: “Snake”

Denotation: a long limbless reptile
Connotation: Something to be


feared; something deceiving

Directions: For each of the questions below, you will be provided


with several words that have the same denotation, but different
connotations. You will fill out the chart for each and determine
whether each word has negative, positive, or neutral connotations.
