Based on the journal articles provided, discuss the philosophy, teachings, and activities in Orff
Schulwerk. Is this method applicable in the Philippine setting? Explain your answer.
Orff Schulwerk method is not as strictly systematic as the other methods. It is a method
that takes advantage the playful heart specially of children to learn music. It combines singing,
instruments, movement, and speech to develop one’s musicality. Schulwerk believed that all
human beings are musical by nature. His method particularly called “elemental music”, was
based also on the synthesis of the arts of the Greek Muses that combined tone, dance, poetry,
image, design, and theatrical gesture. Elemental music is the unity of movement, dance and
speech. Carl Orff’s approach was to create a comfortable atmosphere that brings out a child’s
natural world of playing allowing them to express their musicality in a stress-free and enjoyable
manner. There are four stages: Imitation, Exploration, Improvisation and Composition. Orff also
developed the Instrumentarium. When there were few instruments accessible to children, he
modified instruments such as the xylophone, metallophones, glockenspiel and some percussive
instruments to create an orchestra for children to play music together.
Is the method applicable in the Philippine setting? I believe we have a lot to learn from
Carl Orff’s wisdom and experience in bringing music education to the masses. Here in the
Philippines, it is a common conception that music learning is expensive. But music can be also
taught properly in public classroom even with less equipment. Just as Carl Orff have said, all
human beings are musical by nature, and we only have to bring it out. His methods can be easily
used in every classroom especially in kindergarten and preschools. Orff’s method can be
incorporated in our cultural setting using our own language, dance, poetry, and music. The
number one problem always for a music teacher is to find instruments for his/her students. Like
Orff, we can also improvise in using the things that are available to us, such us guitars, recorders,
Bandurrias, beat box, sticks, electric keyboards etc. I believe that our country has the capability
to adapt from this method also. Filipinos are very musical and music educators will definitely
have a good time using this method of teaching.
