MARITIME
OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT Academic Year/ Semester: Year 2020-2021/ Semester 1
POWER POINT
Select an intermodal or multimodal marine and port infrastructure development project from the list
provided below and using the principles of port planning conduct research to identify some of the
major
Alternative sea and land-bridges in Central America
The Central American region consisting of Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica
hosts a total of 12 major ports. The countries have a geographic advantage by having both ports on the
Atlantic as well as the Pacific Ocean. Also, their proximity to the Panama Canal highlights their
advantageous location.

Issues
Technological improvements in recent years have made it essential to plan the transportation
system of a developing country as a whole, in order to achieve a balance between the capacities
of the various parts. The port region’s face several challenges, such as Poor infrastructure that
causes high logistic costs. Many ports are relatively old and multipurpose. Also, customs form a
serious obstacle for the development of low-cost high efficiency transport. These challenges
impede the competitiveness of the region.
Using the principle of port Planning
Port planning objectives
Many changes have occurred in the technology of ships and cargo handling, and this development is
likely to continue. A key principle in planning seaport facilities, therefore. is that development plans
should be as flexible as possible to allow a prompt response to changing demand. Ideally, the facilities
which a port provides should be designed jointly with the ships which will use them, the land transport
and the port facilities at the other end of the route-that is, as part of an integrated transport system
Broadly speaking in the methodology that begins with the
mission statement of a port,
objectives of a port projects have to be determined
. Objectives of a port determine its economic function that would lead us to demand factors.
On the other side based on objectives and economic functions, the supply variables of ports should
plan simultaneously
We want to renew the Puntarenas Pier so that it is in optimal condition to continue receiving more and
more tourism every day and eventually evaluate a concession. Have a company specialized in cruise
management take over the port. This will be subject to evaluation.
We also want to make a caldera, cargo port master plan and make a master plan for the development of
Pacific ports. We want to leave a development projection in about 25 years. Caldera's current
concession expires in 8 years and the burden has been increasing by 12% per year. This puts us in a
situation that soon, Caldera is going to be insufficient. That is why it is necessary to leave planned and
make the necessary approach for a comprehensive port development in Caldera.
Port Investment Plan
Ports in developing countries should normally plan on the basis of a continuing climate of growth for the
next few decades. The continuing expansion of overseas trade in the majority of developing countries
implies a continuing expansion of maritime trade, and in order to serve a fully developed hinterland the
extent of port facilities required may be several times greater than those existing at present. Clearly, in
spite of the offsetting effect of the introduction of the use of containers and of import substitution
policies, there are grounds for believing that developing countries will in general see a strong continuing
growth of demand for new or improved port facilities.
There will be technological and social developments that necessitate the use of new types of facilities or
different locations, for example, sites nearer deeper water or at a newly planned industrial centre
Issues
economic, technical and environmental
solutions proposed to resolve the challenges, as follows:
The term land bridge is commonly used in Logistics industry and especially for used to
containerized ocean vehicles, it denote the intermodal freight transport sector
(Intermodal means various means of transportation keeps on switching themselves
between air, road, rail etc). Hence the Land Bridge is the term used for land portion of
the journey which is covered by container and is generally done through "Rail".
Suppose a vessel is destined to reach to Colorado (USA) From India as Colorado is
situated in middle of USA one cannot directly ship through only one means of
transportation that is via ocean. So the first half of journey is completed from Indian
Port Consider Jawaharlal Nehru Port (Mumbai) to New York Port and from the container
are the forwarded to Colorado via a Rail Network forming a Land Bridge and overall
Process known as "Mini Land Bridge"
