Industrial Arts Department: Self-Instructional Packets Electrical Installation and Maintenance 10

The document discusses procedures for reading electrical plans that include both lighting fixtures and convenience outlets. It provides instructions on identifying lighting fixtures by counting lights or light symbols, and how hidden lines connected to lights show the location of corresponding switches or controls. Switches are denoted as S1 for a single switch controlling one or more lights, S2 for a two gang switch controlling two lights independently, and S3 for a three gang switch. The document also notes that while utility boxes and junction boxes are not shown on plans, they are implicitly included whenever switches and lights are present, as connections cannot be made without these boxes. Proper PPE and assembly procedures should be reviewed before installing lighting and outlets according to the plan.

D. Discussing new concepts

You have read the importance of electrical plan on the previous lesson, it is really necessary to
plan first before starting the installation to avoid mistakes and repairing of work.

In this lesson you will learn the important reminders and procedures in reading an electrical plan
that has both lighting fixtures and convenience outlets.

Procedures in Reading Lighting Fixtures

 Lighting fixtures can easily be identified by counting the lights or symbol of lights.
 Hidden lines connected on the lights represent the locations of the corresponding
switch or control.
 S1 (single switch) denotes controlling light or lights at the same time.
 S2 (two gang switch) denotes controlling two lights independently.
 S3 (three gang switch) denotes controlling three lights independently.
 S3w (three-way switch) denotes controlling light or lights in two different locations.
 Four to four and a half feet (4 ft. – 4 ½ ft.) should be the height of all the switches/
lighting outlet on the building.

Procedures in Reading Convenience Outlets

 Convenience outlets can easily be identified by counting the outlets or symbols of outlet.
 A line that connects two or more outlets represents a branch circuit.
 The following are different symbols of outlets:

https://www.pinterest.ph/pin/216032113349622433/

 The height of convenience outlets from fin floor is 1 foot.

 The maximum distance of outlets in family room, dining room, and bed rooms is 12 feet.
 The maximum distance of outlets in the kitchen is 4 feet.
 Outlets and lights should NEVER be combined.

Important Reminders:
1. Lighting outlets are mounted on utility box.
2. Lamp holders are mounted on junction box.
3. The conductor of lights is 2.0 mm2 or number 14 AWG.
4. Convenience outlets are mounted on utility box.
5. The conductor of convenience outlets is 3.5 mm2 or number 12 AWG.

Note: Study very well the electrical plan for lighting fixtures and convenience outlets below
and look for the symbols that corresponds on the previous and present lessons.

F. Developing Mastery

Since you have successfully passed and completed the previous activities, you will
now answer the essay question to enhance your knowledge on the lesson.
Note: Your answer must have a maximum of three (3) sentences.

 What other benefits you can get from electrical plans aside from proper planning,
identifying electrical devices, and materials?

After you answered the essay, you conduct self-analysis if you successfully obtained
the objectives of the lesson.

G. Finding practical applications of concepts and skills in daily living

You may now accomplish an activity that will help you understand the application of
the lesson in real life. You are advised to seek assistance from your parents or
guardian in completing the activity.
Note: Have an ample time familiarizing the electrical plan and the reminders. Make sure that

After studying carefully, the reminders and the electrical plan, you must be very good in
identifying the electrical devices, lighting fixtures and convenience outlets found on the
electrical plan.

If you failed to answer Activity 4, it is highly suggested that you may study again the
reminders and electrical plan.

E. Continuation of the discussion of new concepts

Since you have successfully passed Activity 4, you may now fill out the table below.

H. Making generalizations and abstractions about the lesson

The Importance of Electrical Wiring Diagrams/Plans

People who have experience wiring a structure know that this can be a bigger challenge
than first anticipated. They may think that the wiring process will take a few weeks and it
ends up taking significantly longer due to unanticipated problems. Perhaps some of the
wires are defective and suddenly the overhead costs go up. Regardless of the reason,
electrical wiring diagrams have key benefits that help professionals circumvent certain
problems that would otherwise derail a project.

1. Electrical Wiring Diagrams Save Time

Everyone knows the feeling of certain projects taking far longer than anticipated. One of the
ways to avoid this delay is to use an electrical wiring diagram. The diagram contains key
areas of the structure that professionals can anticipate as causing potential problems before
they even get there. Anticipating sharp corners, tight walls, or potential wet spots can help
electricians save time when wiring a building because they can anticipate the problem before
they get there. With this in mind, the professionals will have a plan for that spot when they
arrive.

2. Electric Wiring Diagrams Save Money

Nobody likes to spend more money than they have to. Electrical wiring diagrams can help
people plan for the exact type and length of wire that the various parts of the project will
require. This means that people will never have to go back and purchase or cut additional

3. Electrical Wiring Diagrams Prevent Injury
Anyone with experience dealing with electricity knows that people can get hurt wiring a
structure. Electrical wiring diagrams can help technicians anticipate areas of the building that
might have the potential for injury. This could involve nails and sharp objects or even areas
where people can get shocked putting the wiring together. If people are injured on the job,
this can result in a substantial delay and an expensive hospital trip. The most effective form of
medical treatment is to prevent the problem in the first place.
