CHAPTER 2: Quadratic Functions: 2.1 Quadratic Equations and Inequalities

1. The document discusses solving quadratic equations by two methods: completing the square and using the quadratic formula. 2. Examples of solving quadratic equations by completing the square are shown, identifying the process of ensuring the x^2 coefficient is 1 before applying the method. 3. Examples are also given of solving quadratic equations using the quadratic formula, identifying the need to determine the a, b, and c values first before applying the formula.

NOTES
If α and β are the roots of quadratic equation, then the quadratic equation is x2 – (α + β)x + αβ = 0, where α + β is the sum of roots
(SOR) and αβ is the product of roots (POR).

C. Form a quadratic equation from the given roots, α and β.

Bentukkan persamaan kuadratik daripada punca-punca, α dan β, yang diberi. LS2.1.2 PL2

α = –4, β = 9

Method 1/Kaedah 1: (x – α)(x – β) = 0 Method 2/Kaedah 2: x2 – (α + β)x + αβ = 0

[x – (–4)](x – 9) = 0 Watch out for the α + β = –4 + 9 x2 – (α + β)x + αβ = 0
(x + 4)(x – 9) = 0 negative sign. =5 x2 – (5)x + (–36) = 0
