CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
Social media refers to the interactions among people in which they
create, share, and exchange information and ideas in virtual communities
and networks. The Office of Communications and Marketing manages the
main Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube accounts.
People create content, post it, bookmark it, and network, a rapid pace on
social media, which has exploded as a category of online discourse. Social
media is rapidly shifting public discourse in society and setting trends and
agendas in issues ranging from the climate and politics to technology and
the entertainment industry, thanks to its ease of use, speed, and scope.
(Asur and Huberman, 2010). This implies that the use of social media is
the primary reason we use social media to stay connected.
Academic performance is one of student’ achievement across
various academic subjects. Including teachers and education officials, they
typically measure student using classroom performance, graduation rates
and also results from standardized and other tests. There are also several
factors which include students' learning skills, parental background, peer
influence, teachers' quality, learning infrastructure among others.
Caballero et al. (2007), academic performance involves meeting goals,
achievements and objectives set in the program or course that a student
attends. These are expressed through grades which are the result of an
assessment that involves passing or not certain tests, subjects or courses.
On their part, Torres and Rodríguez (2006 quoted by Willcox, 2011) define
academic performance as the level of knowledge shown in an area or
subject compared to the norm, and it is generally measured using the

grade point average.
The modern world is the place where everybody has a connection
between individuals simplified by the various channels and platforms
available to us on the internet. The impact of social media on college
students has been more evident as compared to an older generation.
Social networking and media tools offer students the opportunity to
communicate, get in touch, access information, research, and chat.
Compared with some other gatherings of individuals, the usage of social
networking sites among college students is more, mainly because they are
pulled in widely to the new innovation and especially to the chance it
offers for creating social networks (Gorhe, 2019). However, the internet is
today the most important source of information and the growing
dimensions of the use of social media by students cannot be
underestimated. It has been observed that students devote more
attention and time to social media than they do for their studies and they
cannot pass their examinations well if they do not learn (Osharive, 2015).
Also, the study conducted by Maya (2015), revealed that media use
contribute to lower academic performance, low self perceptions and less
interest in college oriented carriers. Academic excellence plays an
important role in an individual’s life; be it in the family, at social
gatherings, at workplace, in an institution or even among peers.
Nowadays, students are the most active users of the internet and social
media.
The researcher conducted this study which they observe a certain
impact on the academic performance of college students using social
media. Hence, the researcher sought to explore students’ use of social

media and their academic performance. This research aims to study
further the relationship of students’ impact of social media to their
technology ethics decisions. The researcher also seek to find how social
media helps every student in their academics performance especially in
the middle of their agony during study. The purpose also of this study is
to find if there a significant impact between social media and student’s
academic performances.
The researchers believe that this research will contribute the principles of
the teachers, school administrators and also students. There are some
strong implications and methods on how to blend social media to the
academic performances of students effectively.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the foreign and local literature & studies related
to The Impact of Social Media in the Academic Performance of College
Students. It presents several ideas used to support the current study.

COLLEGE STUDENT
College is important for many reasons, including long-term financial
gain, job stability, career satisfaction and success outside of the
workplace. With more and more occupations requiring advanced
education, a college degree is critical to your success in today's workforce.
According to Scherer, Talley, and Fife (2017), it is found that
non-cognitive personal behaviors such as time, view point are effective
indicators for predicting academic performance, because poor time
management methods cruelly make it difficult for people to arrange work
and when they are being investigated, you may feel uneasy about the
outcome of the course. According to Baothman, Aljefri, Agha, & Khan
(2018) Britton and Tesser Point out that compared with long-term
planning, short-term planning is a more effective time management
technique, because the plan can be adjusted according to rapid changes
or unstable conditions, which can be adaptable, which is in today's fast-
paced, multi-tasking life Research is very important, but it may not lead
students to develop effective study habits. According to Gerrard,
Newfield, Asli, and Variawa (2017) considering the research workload
requirements of first-year design undergraduates at the University of
Toronto, it is found that there is a connection between how

undergraduates view the problem and the time they take to make an
assessment. This is the most important number.
However, there is a positive and negative impact on college
students that's why more research is needed, focusing on longer school
days or longer school years, rather than other school characteristics and
reform efforts. It is important to better understand the circumstances
under which extending learning time is beneficial, mainly because findings
in the literature indicate that simply increasing time is not enough. There
are many possibilities for why more time helps. College students may
need more time to actively participate in academic activities.
DISCIPLINE
Several studies have been done to identify problems about Discipline-
based educational practice, discipline is a model of curriculum in which
content is divided into separate and distinct subjects or disciplines, such
as language, science, mathematics, and social studies. Discipline provides
learner an effective and efficient foundation in order to meet their own
talents, skills and abilities in a learning stages and process. Because it
matters what discipline should be chosen and applied in order to know
themselves deeper and better.
According from European Journal of Pharmaceutical and
Medical Research (January 2016) In this theory, Discipline-based
educational practice has been offered in the hope of instilling and
retaining knowledge to the learners. This type of education had worked
well in the early days of dental education, but in the recent scenario it has
led to a „bloated curriculum‟. Additionally, According to Debbie
Gibbs (2018) The narrower, intense focus helps students efficiently

College of Education
develop subject-specific skills and content. A single discipline approach
is efficient in that material can be taught in a logical sequence, with skills
building on skills. This supports students in progressing, practicing,
mastering, and pushing further within the subject matter. Moreover, In
the curricula, school children are expected to concentrate on a single field
of study, possibly supported by several courses in closely associated
disciplines. Curriculum theorists refer to such curricula as discipline based.
The term discipline based covers the full range of distinct subjects or
fields of study, including the more traditional usage in areas such as
mathematics or physics; in areas of study with a strong professional
focus, such as molecular biology; and in newer areas of study, such as
media education according to Mustafa Yunus Eryaman (2017).
Therefore, having a focused discipline will make student a more skillful
and capable, in order to master and build skills and knowledge, it is better
to have a narrower discipline in order to develop subject-specific skills and
content.
In this theory, having a focused discipline will make student a more
skillful because discipline is a model of curriculum in which content is
divided into separate and distinct subjects or disciplines, such as
language, science, mathematics, and social studies, therefore in order to
master and build skills and knowledge, it is better to have a narrower
discipline in order to develop subject-specific skills and content.
ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

Academic achievement is vital for the fruitful advancement of young

individuals in society. Understudies who do well in school are superior able

to form the transition into adulthood and to realize word related and

financial victory. Scholarly execution is the degree to which a understudy,

instructor or institution has achieved their brief or long-term instructive

objectives. Besides, there are uncertain comes about over which person

components effectively foresee scholarly execution, components such as

test uneasiness, environment, inspiration, and feelings require thought

when creating models of school accomplishment. In According to Narad

and Abdullah (2016) scholastic execution is the information picked up

which is evaluated by marks by a instructor and/or instructive objectives

set by understudies and instructors to be accomplished over a particular

period of time. They included that these objectives are measured by

utilizing persistent evaluation or examinations comes about. And also

according to Arhad, Zaidi & Mahmood (2015) moreover shown that

academic performance measures instruction result. They focused that it

appears and measures the degree to which an instructive institution,

instructors and understudies have accomplished their instructive

objectives. Based on the study of Jacquie Butler (February 2018).

Looking at in college truly may well be a way of life choice. A bit like

that you just don’t do it routinely adequate. Pressing a few time as of late

a test is like starting your shoreline body workout two days at some point

as of late summer. Instep, make examining a penchant it ought to be a

theory, being a college understudy isn't straightforward. All you have got

need to do is to put all your effort in orchestrate to meet and accomplish

your incredible comes around in all perspectives. Keep your effort

unfaltering adequate in organize for you to step forward and fulfill more

that are required for being a qualified college understudy.

Lastly, Academic success is vital since it is unequivocally connected to

the positive results we value. Adults who are scholastically effective and

with tall levels of instruction are more likely to be employed, have steady

work, have more business openings than those with less instruction and

earn higher pay rates, are more likely to have wellbeing protections, are

less subordinate on social help, are less likely to lock in in criminal action,

are more dynamic as citizens and charitable volunteers and are healthier

and more joyful. Scholarly victory is vital since working individuals will

require higher levels of education to handle the mechanically requesting

occupations of the long run. Presently a day you would like. A post-

secondary education in arrange to urge a work.

Online Learning

Learning and instructing can happen at times that are more helpful

and profitable for both understudies and instructors. Understudies can

work at their claim pace inside a given system and the online learning and

instructing engagement prepare can be broken into little more visit parcels

of time, with an opportunity for reflection in between. As stated by

Watts (2016) Asynchronous instruction means that teachers and

learners do not have synchronous sessions and that students have access

to course content through the Internet at any time they want or need.

Communication among the participants occurs mainly through email and

online forums and is typically moderated by the instructor. In addition to

that Campus Explorer (2019) open schedule online courses students

work asynchronously with all the materials being provided digitally.

Although there are deadlines for submitting assignments, students

working at their own pace have some independence as to when they do

their coursework. Moreover, Zhang and Worthington (2017) teaching

via distance education at both the undergraduate and graduate levels

more profitable than Face to Face teaching at higher education institutions

in China.

Moreover, online learning may be a developing and energizing better

approach to memorize around almost anything. If there's a course you've

got continuously needed to require or a aptitude you have got

continuously needed to memorize, but you've got not had the time to go

to a conventional face-to-face lesson or there hasn't been an opportunity

close you, at that point online learning could be your answer. Today's

online learning openings offer everything from one-hour live workshops to

online degrees. There's essentially something for everybody, all you've got

to do is discover it.

Social Media

Social Media as the time goes by, creates a wide variety of change

in terms of the daily lives of people. It continuously affecting the way they

interact with one another as well as how they communicate. In addition, it

influences not just the interaction of most of the people but also in

different aspects specifically in learning habits of the students. Pew

Research Center (2018). Social media use is an ever-increasing

phenomenon of the 21st century. In the United States, about 7 of 10

individuals use social media to connect with others, receive news content,

share information, and to entertain themselves. and In addition, According

to a recent study by Ifinedo (2016), young individuals pervasively use

social media for a variety of reasons including entertainment, identity

formation, social enhancement augmenting offline social status through

online interactions, and maintaining interpersonal connections.

Moreover, Antoci et al., 2015; Hall, Kearney, & Xing,

2018; Subrahmanyam, Reich, Waechter, & Espinoza,

(2008) suggest that social media can provide individuals with a platform

that overcomes barriers of distance and time to connect and reconnect

with others and thereby expand and strengthen their offline networks and
