Signs of the Kingdom/Miracles

THE MIRACLES OF JESUS CHRIST

1. The Raising of the Widow's Son (Luke 7:11-17)

Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went along with
him. As he approached the
town gate, a dead person was
being carried out - the only son
of his mother, and she was a
widow. And a large crowd
from the town was with her.
When the Lord saw her, his
heart went out to her and he
said, "Don't cry."

Then he went up and

touched the coffin, and those carrying it stood still. He said "Young man, I say to you, get
up!" The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.
They were all filled with awe and praised God. "A great prophet has appeared
among us," they said. "God has come to help his people." This news about Jesus spread
throughout Judea and the surrounding country.

Lesson:
The story in Luke 7 is very intense with a number of possible ways to
understand its meaning. It is not too hard for us to imagine what it might have meant to a
widow to lose her only son. The funeral was already in procession when Jesus happened
to encounter them. We describe our relationship with God in a variety of ways, including
those who have a real difficulty even contemplating relationship with God. Yet, there is
something profound about experiencing God’s presence in our lives.

2. The Healing of a Paralysed Man (Luke 5:18-19)

Some men came carrying a paralytic

on a mat and tried to take him into the
house to lay him before Jesus. When they
could not find a way to do this because of
the crowd, they went up on the roof and
lowered him on his mat through the tiles
into the middle of the crowd, right in front
of Jesus. (Luke 5:18-19)

When Jesus saw their faith, he said

"Friend, your sins are forgiven." The
Pharisees and the teachers of the law began
thinking to themselves, "Who is this fellow
who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive
sins but God alone?"

Jesus knew what they were thinking

and asked, "Why are you thinking these
things in your hearts? Which is easier: to
say, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Get up and walk?' But that you may know that the
Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins..."

He said to the paralyzed man, "I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home."
Immediately he stood up in front of them, took what he had been lying on and went home
praising God. Everyone was amazed and gave praise to God. They were filled with awe
and said, "We have seen remarkable things today." (Luke 5:20-26)

Lesson:
This reinforce that Jesus knows what we need the most. The paralyzed man
desperately wanted to be able to walk but Jesus first forgave him for his sins and then he
healed him. God can see things that others can't see, like how we are doing on the inside.
God would rather help us fix problem with our sin or things that we do wrong that
prevents us from being closer to Him then answer prayers that we think we need.
Sometimes when we pray to God for things or areas in our life we wonder why God
doesn't seem to answer. Maybe ask God to reveal to them what He would like us to work
on and those prayers will be answered. God knows best.
3. The Stilling of the Storm (Mark 4:35-37)

That day, when

evening came, he said to
his disciples, "Let us go
over to the other side."
Leaving the crowd behind,
they took him along, just
as he was, in the boat.
There were also other
boats with him. A furious
squall came up, and the
waves broke over the boat,
so that it was nearly
swamped. (Mark 4:35-37)

Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to
him, "Teacher, don't you care if we drown?" He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the
waves, "Quiet! Be still!" Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said
to his disciples, "Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?" They were terrified
and asked each other, "Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!" (Mark
4:38-41)

Lesson:
Faith enables us to tap God's supernatural power to overcome any storm that will
rear its ugly head in our lives. 'Jesus calms the storm' teaches us to apply faith in our
lives, especially, against the problems we are powerless to overcome. 'Jesus calms the
storm' should remind Christians that God has a solution for all the storms of life. 'Jesus
calms the storm' reminds Bible readers of the saying, 'With men this is impossible; but
with God all things are possible. (Matthew 19:26).

4. The Feeding of the 5,000 (Mark 6:30-44)

The apostles gathered round

Jesus and reported to him all they had
done and taught. Then, because so
many people were coming and going
that they did not even have a chance
to eat, he said to them, "Come with
me by yourselves to a quiet place and
get some rest." So they went away by
themselves in a boat to a solitary
place. But many who saw them
leaving recognized them and ran on
foot from all the towns and got there
ahead of them.
When Jesus landed and saw a
large crowd, he had compassion on
them because they were like sheep
without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things. By this time, it was late in
the day, so his disciples came to him. "This is a remote place," they said, "and it is
already very late. Send the people away so that they can go to the surrounding
countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat." But he answered, "You
give them something to eat." They said to him, "That would take eight months of a man's
wages! Are we to go and spend that much on bread and give it to them to eat?" "How
many loaves do you have?" he asked. "Go and see." When they found out, they said,
"Five - and two fish." Then Jesus directed them to have all the people sit down in groups
on the green grass. So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties. Taking the five
loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves.
Then he gave them to his disciples to set before the people. He also divided the two fish
among them all. They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve
basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish. The number of men who had eaten was five
thousand. (Mark 6:30-44)

Lesson:
Jesus gives thanks for the food, raises it to Heaven, blesses it and gives it to the
disciples to give out. Everyone eats and there is enough left over to fill twelve baskets.
Jesus provides for both physical and spiritual needs of people. Jesus had faith in God's
providence. He has compassion for the needy. In the story of the feeding of the 5000,
Jesus showed us that he can take something small and turn it into something big. He took
one little boy’s lunch and he fed thousands. He met the needs of the people, and in doing
so, he showed us that he could meet all of our needs too. Jesus is there, and he knows
your needs before you ask. Jesus will always give us what we need because Jesus is all
we need.

5. The Resurrection (Matthew 28:3-8)

His appearance was like lightning, and

his clothes were white as snow. The guards
were so afraid of him that they shook and
became like dead men. The angel said to the
women "Do not be afraid, for I know that
you are looking for Jesus, who was
crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as
he said. Come and see the place where he
lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples:
'He has risen from the dead and is going
ahead of you into Galilee. There you will
see him.' Now I have told you."

So the women hurried away from the

tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to
tell his disciples. (Matthew 28:3-8)

Lesson:
Belief in the resurrection is very
important to many Christians because the
resurrection shows that Jesus defeated death. it is seen as proof of life after death. The
resurrection also proves God's omnipotence and omnibenevolence. The resurrection of
Jesus Christ simply means like that power that raised Jesus from the dead and destroyed
the grave, so also for the believer, the same power sets the believer free to live a new life
that destroys sin in his or her life: a new life of victory over sin.
How can you apply these lessons in your present life situation?
If I have faith in Jesus Christ, I could see miracles all around us. Praying for all to
receive the Gospel. I could definitely see God's hand in the lives of His people through the
miracles in the scriptures. I can apply these lessons in my present life situation through singing
worship songs, staying connected to Him, serve others, share the Gospel, fulfill His purpose for
our life, and Pray for eyes to see these opportunities in order to glorify God in my daily life.
