Registered person responsibilities
Being the registered person of a motor vehicle means you have several important
responsibilities, including:
letting the NZ Transport Agency know if you change your address
licensing your vehicle by the due date or applying for an exemption from licensing
if the vehicle is temporarily off the road
letting the Transport Agency know immediately if you sell or dispose of the
vehicle (see below for more information)
keeping the vehicle up to warrant of fitness (WoF) or certificate of fitness (CoF)
standard at all times
keeping the road user charges (RUC) up-to-date if your vehicle is over 3500kg or
is powered by diesel, or any other fuel not taxed at the pump
cancelling the registration and returning the registration plates to an agent of the
Transport Agency if the vehicle is going to be off the road permanently
taking responsibility for speed camera fines, parking tickets and tolls incurred in
this vehicle.
You can take care of some of these responsibilities online. Go to
www.nzta.govt.nz/online.
Selling the vehicle
When a vehicle is sold, both the seller and the buyer must independently let the
Transport Agency know.
If you sell the vehicle privately, we recommend you ask the person buying the vehicle
to let the Transport Agency know before you hand it over. If you hand the vehicle over
and the buyer hasn’t completed their paperwork, you could be held liable for their
fines and fees. They can confirm they’ve completed the paperwork by showing you a
receipt of the notification, or if they completed the notification online, they could show
you an email confirmation.
As the seller, you can complete the ‘I’ve sold a vehicle’ transaction online at
www.nzta.govt.nz/online. You will need your New Zealand photo driver licence as
identification. Or, you can call us on 0800 108 809 to let us know who bought the
vehicle, or pick up the Selling or disposing of a vehicle? (MR13A) form available at an
agent.
Factsheet 41: Buying and selling a vehicle contains further information about the buying
and selling processes. You can view it online at www.nzta.govt.nz, or pick up a copy
from an agent.
Personalised plates
If the vehicle has personalised plates attached to it and you’re selling them with the
vehicle, you must transfer the entitlement to the personalised plates independently of
the vehicle.
Go to www.licensys.com for further information or contact LicenSys on
0800 REMAKE (0800 736253).
