Voluntary vs. Involuntary Lab

1. This lab document outlines two experiments to test voluntary and involuntary muscle action. The first asks students to stare without blinking for 2 minutes while counting blinks, then switch roles. The second has students repeatedly lift their heel or toes for 2 minutes to test muscle fatigue. 2. Data tables are provided to record blink counts and number of lifts for each muscle action. Analysis questions define voluntary and involuntary muscles, and ask whether blinking and muscles used are voluntary or involuntary. It also asks students to compare fatigue in muscles lifting the heel versus toes. 3. The summary highlights the two experiments on muscle action and fatigue, and that analysis questions define key terms and

Muscle Lab

I. Voluntary or Involuntary Muscle Action?

Procedures:

1 1. You will need a partner to complete this lab.

2 2. Blink your eyes 3 times and then stare at the eye below. Continue to stare at the eye for 2
3 minutes (have your partner time you). TRY NOT TO BLINK.
3. Count to yourself how many times you blink during the 2 minutes.
4. Record the number of blinks in the chart on your data sheet.
5. Switch rolls with your partner.
6. Repeat steps 1-5 until each person completes 2 trials.
7. Answer the analysis questions on your lab sheet for this lab.

II. What Happens to Voluntary Muscles as they Fatigue?

Procedures:

4 1. You will need a partner to complete this lab.

5 2. You will be raising your heel so that only the ball of your foot & your toes are touching the floor.
6 3. Count the number of times you can lift your heel in two (2) minutes (have your partner time you).
4. Record this number in your data table as well as how the muscle felt after the 2 minutes.
5. Next, you will be raising your toes & foot so that only your heel is on the floor.
6. Count the number of times you can lift your toes in two (2) minutes (have your partner time you).
7. Record this number in your data table as well as how the muscle felt after the 2 minutes.
8. Answer the analysis questions for this lab on your answer sheet.
I. Voluntary or Involuntary Muscle Action?

Data Table:

Trial Number Your # of blinks

1
2

Analysis:
1. Using pg. 12 in your textbook, define voluntary & involuntary muscles:

2. Are the muscles involved in blinking voluntary, involuntary, or both?

Explain your answer in detail!

3. List 2 involuntary muscles found on your body.

II. What Happens to Muscles as they Fatigue?

Data Table:

Action # of contractions feeling of muscle after contractions

lifting heel

lifting toes

Analysis:
During this lab, your gastrocnemius was used to lift your heel and your gracilis & soleus was used to
lift your toes.

1. Were the muscles (all 3) used in this lab voluntary or involuntary muscle? Explain why…

2. Your gastrocnemius should not have been as tired as your gracilis & solues was during this activity.
WHY?

3. Having completed this station, describe two (2) differences between involuntary and voluntary
muscle.
