1. (i) Express the complex number ( 3 − i)11 in the form a + ib where a, b ∈ R.

(ii) Let z = 1 + 2 + i. Find z 2 and hence find the argument of z.
(iii) Find all complex solutions to the equation sin(2z) = 2.

2. (i) Evaluate the limit

3x3 − 2x2 + 3
lim .
x→∞ (2x − 1)(4x2 − 3x + 3)
(ii) Use the definition of the derivative of a function f (x),

f (x + h) − f (x)
f 0 (x) = lim
h→0 h
to show that f (x) = x3 is differentiable and to find its derivative from first
principles.
(iii) Evaluate the following limit

x2 − πx + 14 π 2
lim .
x→π/2 sin x − 1

(iv) State the rule for finding the nth derivative of a product f (x) = u(x)v(x) and
e2x
use it to find the 3rd derivative of f (x) = with respect to x.
x

3. (i) Find the degree 6 Taylor polynomial of f (x) = esin(x ) about x = 0.
(ii) Estimate the maximum error in using the degree 1 Taylor polynomial p1,0 (x)
about x = 0 to approximate the function f (x) = e− cos x over the interval
0 ≤ x ≤ π/2.
(iii) Starting with an initial estimate x0 = 1 for the solution to ex = 2 + x2 , find a
first improvement using the Newton-Raphson method.
(You may leave your answer in terms of e.)
(iv) A force F = i + 3j − 2k acts on a particle which is displaced by the vector
d = 2i + j − k. Calculate the work done by the force and the cosine of the
angle between F and d.

4. (i) Find a parametric equation for the line of intersection of the planes x+y+z = 3
and 2x − y − 2z = −1.
(ii) A plane contains the three points (1, 2, 3), (2, 3, 4) and (1, 0, 4). Find a vector
normal to the plane and hence find a Cartesian equation for the plane.
(iii) Let f (x, y) = x2 + y 2 where x = eu + e−v and y = cos(u + v). Use the chain
rule to compute ∂f /∂u and ∂f /∂v.
(iv) Find the general solution of the following differential equation
2
y 0 + 2xy = e−x cos x.

6. (i) Find all the critical points of the function

f (x, y) = x3 − 3xy 2 + y 3 − 4y

and identify each as a local minimum, local maximum or saddle point.

(ii) Determine whether the following matrix is positive definite
 
1 2 2

under the SOR iteration method for any choice of x(0) , stating why. Write out
the resulting SOR iteration with ω = 0.5 and hence find x(1) where x(0) =
(2, 1, 1)T
