Importance of dairy industry

• Milk and dairy products rank as the largest


single source of income to the farmers of many
countries in the world
Milk value chain in Sri Lanka
• Sri Lanka is having a well organized milk collecting
and marketing network
• Dairy farmers sell their milk as
– Individually – privet consumer, hotels and canteens, privet
processor (Nestle)
MILCO is the pioneer company and they purchase 40% of
domestic produce through collecting centers by FMs.
The institution was established in 1956 as “National Milk
Board”
In 1986 converted to MILCO under a world bank project
1998 converted to “Kiriya”
2000 taken back by the government and named MILCO (pvt)
Ltd
• Now MILCO involves in dairy development,
milk collection, milk processing and marketing
as a 100% government own company.
• MILCO has well established milk collecting
network which consist of
– 72 milk collecting centers
– 1700 farmer managed societies

• Cooling is done until bowsers arrive
• Cooled milk 3-4C
• Then milk is dispatch to the bowsers under 4C
• During unloading at processing factory they are
checked for
– Manhole seal
– Center code number
– Impurities present in milk
– Leakages from valves
– Temperature of the milk

• Foremilk - milk at start of milking the


relatively low-fat milk with a high sugar
content that is produced at the beginning of a
breast feed.
• Hind milk - the milk produced after foremilk
during milking, which is rich in fat content and
high in calories.
