Based on the discussion, answer the following questions
1. What is the purpose of studying (a) descriptive statistics and (b) inferential statistics?
Descriptive and inferential statistics are different from each other in terms of their
function or purpose. Descriptive statistics focuses on summarizing and organizing data
in order for it to easily understood. The reason why we study this is because it would
help us understand ways on how to collect, summarize and present data in an organized
manner. It also involves the use of visual representations such as charts and graphs.
Learning descriptive statistics would help us understand different functions of each and
in what type of data or situation it is appropriate to use. In this way, we’ll be able to
provide information efficiently. On the other hand, inferential statistics is a statistical
method that focuses on drawing conclusions and assumptions based on the given data.
It is important for us to study inferential statistics because it would help us understand
methods of analyzing data and make better decisions based on the results of our
analyzation.
2. What is the importance of using data visualization?
In business and other fields, we would be dealing with a lot of data or information.
Those data will go through a series of analyzation and interpretation. Data visualization
would play an important role in helping us understand those data clearly. It would
enable us to easily determine errors, patterns and trends in order to draw a conclusion.
Data visualization provides us with an efficient way of communicating valuable
information to aid decision making processes.
3. Explain the uses of the following charts: (a) pie, (b) bar, (c) line and (d) scatterplot
Pie, bar, line and scatterplot charts are visualization tools that helps summarize and
present data in an efficient way. Although all of them are charts, they are different in
terms of how and when they are used. (a) pie charts are used to group data and the
proportion it represents or takes up. It is also used to make comparisons on categorical
data (b) Bar charts show the size of a variable with each bar representing different
values. It is also used to compare categorical variables. (c) line charts are used to
present data that is collected over a period of time. It helps show trends and patterns
over time. Lastly, (d) scatter plot is used when an individual wants to determine the
correlation between quantitative variables.
