Case 1.1: How is this Stuff (OB) Going to Help Me?
Ganga Acharya wants to be a manager. She enjoyed her
accounting, finance, statistics, and marketing courses. Each of
these provided her with some clear-cut answers. Now the
professor in her organizational behavior course is telling her that
there are really very few clear-cut answers when it comes to
managing people (HR + OB). The professor has discussed some
of the emerging challenges and the historical background and
ways (ideas) that behavioral science concepts play a big role in
the course. Ganga is very perplexed (confused). She came to
college to get answers on how to be an effective manager, but this
course surely doesn't seem to be helping in that direction. What a
problem over problem?
Questions:
1. How would you relieve Ganga's anxiety? How is a course in
organizational behavior going to make her a better manager?
2. Why did the professor start off with a brief overview of
emerging challenges?
3. How does a course in organizational behavior differ from
courses in fields such as accounting, finance, statistics, or
marketing?
Answer 1:
It’s obvious for Ganga to get anxious as being manager means to carry a big
responsibility towards organization and its employees. It is very important to
understand why people behave the way they do and study the complex nature of
human being in an organization, to better manage and increase the value of human
capital in an organization.
A course in organizational behavior is going to make her a better manager by:
a. Relationship between an organization and its employees.
The study of OB helps in better understanding of the relationship between an
organization and its employees and thereby helping in the development of
better Human Resource strategies in creating a better work environment,
employee loyalty and increasing the overall value of the human capital for
the organization.
b. Effective utilization of Human Resource.
OB helps managers to effectively and efficiently manage their employees,
inspiring and motivating them to higher efficiency and productivity through
a better understanding and analysis of human behavior.
c. Motivating employees.
OB helps managers to better understand their employees and motivate them.
Managers can apply different motivational tools as per individual
requirements resulting in better performance of whole organization.
d. Improving labor relations.
OB helps in understanding the cause of the problem, somehow predict its
future course and control its consequences.
e. Predicting Human Behavior.
This is one of the major reason to study OB. Knowledge of OB prepares
students like Ganga to become better managers by becoming a student of
human behavior from a management perspective and thereby contributing to
organizational effectiveness and profitability.
Answer 2:
Organizational Behavior mainly deals with employee attitudes and feelings,
including job satisfaction, organizational commitment, job involvement and
emotional labor. Thus, it is very important to have knowledge of emerging
challenges.
Some of the reasons why it is important to discuss emerging challenges in
the field of OB are:
a. Workforce diversity.
It is very important for managers to learn to respect different diversities.
Such activity enhance positive environment and better productivity
whereas, if ignored can lead to increased turnover, heightened inter-
personal conflict and more strained communication.
b. Improving productivity and Quality.
There is a lot of competition in the market at present context. Managers
must be aware of public needs and increase productivity and quality as
per the requirement. Quality products are more preferred by people so
managers should study how to achieve customer satisfaction from their
products.
c. Changed employee expectation.
Employees’ expectations towards organization changes frequently.
Working is not all about money in today’s case. Employee expects for
equality and same level of respect with management.
d. Globalization.
We can see business growing day by day and international companies
overtaking the market. In this tough competition, managers should learn
to adapt into the environment and they should make strategies on how to
extend the business in international market.
Answer 3.
A study in organizational behavior totally differs from courses in fields such as
accounting, finance, statistics, or marketing. Organizational Behavior deals with
employee attitudes and feelings, including job satisfaction,
organizational commitment, job involvement and emotional labor whereas other
courses deal with technical things only. There is no involvement of study of human
behavior under other courses. Accounting, finance, statistics or marketing only
studies about how to manage the finance of the organization or how to increase
marketing in current market but not behavior of people/ employees. However,
organizational behavior somehow effect those fields as well. Studying human
behavior is not as simple as learning technical things. Human behavior is
something that is not constant as the techniques used in other fields
