A solenoid is a long helical coil of wire through which a current is run in order to create a
magnetic field. The magnetic field of the solenoid is the superposition of the fields due to the
current through each coil. It is nearly uniform inside the solenoid and close to zero outside and

solenoid is dependent on a few factors such as, the current in the coil, number of turns per unit
length etc. The following graph is obtained by a researcher while doing an experiment to see

Metallic Character
The ability of an atom to donate electrons and form positive ion (cation) is 1x 4
known as electropositivity or metallic character. Down the group, metallic
character increases due to increase in atomic size and across the period, from

Non-Metallic Character
The ability of an atom to accept electrons to form a negative ion (anion) is
called non-metallic character or electronegativity. The elements having high
electro-negativity have a higher tendency to gain electrons and form anion.
Down the group, electronegativity decreases due to increase in atomic size and

in atomic size.

20.Read the following and answer any four questions from 20 (i) to 20 (iv)
Harmful and toxic chemicals enter our bodies when they are added to the soil and water.
Pesticides are used to protect the food crops from diseases, and pests and chemical waste of
factories are dumped in open or disposed off into rivers. These chemicals are washed down into
the soil and ultimately to the water table or get absorbed or taken up from the soil by the
plants along with water and minerals and this way harmful chemicals enter the food chain. The
quantity of these chemicals increases with increases in trophic level of the food chain because
these substances are not degradable and man is at the top of the food chain, so concentration is
maximum in human beings. Thus, accumulation of DDT has been maximum in man as DDT is
used to destroy pests.
This is the reason why our food grains such as wheat and rice, vegetables and fruits and even
meat contain varying amounts of pesticides residues. So, the highest trophic level at the
extreme right of food chain has the maximum concentration of harmful chemicals in a food
chain.
i) The accumulation of non biodegradablechemical in an organism from water or food
exposure is called : 1
a) Eutrophication b) Biomagnification
c) Biological demand d) both (b) and (c)
ii) The maximum concentration of pesticides occurs in- 1
a) Autotrophsb) Primary consumers
c) Secondary consumers d) Top Consumers
iii) DDT is- 1
