Learning objectives:
At the end of the lesson pupils should be able to:
Reading, writing and partitioning of numbers
Read, write and partition numbers up to 1,000,000.
Order numbers and use less than, greater than or equal to sign to compare numbers.
Use marked or unmarked number lines to locate positions of numbers.

Starter 1: Revise year 3 topics
Starter2: Write some numbers on the board and ask different learners to read them and also
explore place value.
Main Activity I: Reading, writing and partitioning numbers: Learner’s book pages 2 and 3.
Digits: They make up numbers. They are ten in number i.e 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
Partition: means the breaking down of numbers into parts or the expansion of numbers. i.e.
517= 500+10+7
Place value: is the value of a digit in a number determined by its position.
Example1: Write the following in words:
2345 = Two thousand, three hundred and forty five.
77777 = Seventy seven thousand seven hundred and seventy-seven
Example2: Write in figures:
Four thousand nine hundred and fifty one = 4000+900+50+1= 4951
Ninety-one thousand two hundred and four= 91000+200+4= 91,204
Example3: Partition the following:
8467= 8000+400+60+7
656745 =600,000+50000+6000+700+40+7
Example 4: Write the place value of 4 in these numbers.
6423= hundreds
45678= Tens of thousands or 40,000
674872= thousand

Introduce the topic.
Let the class open their book to page 4 of learner’s book and investigate: Ahmed writes a
list of four –digit whole numbers. The digits in each number add up to 3. He writes the
numbers in order of size, starting with the smallest.
Let the class write down all the numbers that could be in Ahmed’s list, making sure they are
written in order.
Write the following numbers in order of size, starting with the smallest: 10661606 1660
1666 1060.
Revise inequalities with the class.
Tell the class that we can compare numbers using less than sign and greater than sign i.e
Use less than or greater than to make these statement true:
1. 505 ? 550
2. 1010 ? 1009
Teach the class how to locate numbers on marked and unmarked number lines.
Give them more numbers to locate on number lines.
Assessment Criteria: Are the pupils able to:
Identify the place value of each digit of a number
Write numbers both in words and in digits
Order numbers from smallest to greatest and vis-versa.
