Learning Goals
After successful completion of this course, students will be able to…
1. Perform experiments, record data, and draw conclusions from the experimental raw data and be
familiar with good laboratory techniques including chemical safety guidelines and chemical waste
disposal procedures and with basic laboratory equipments and apparatus.
2. Determine the formula unit of a hydrated salt (% of impurity in a hydrated salt).

4. Determine the theoretical quantities of reactants and products (Stoichiometry) and the % yield.
5. Practice a precipitate forming chemical reaction and understand the general precipitation rules.
6. Understand the Ideal Gas Law from a gas forming reaction of a strong reducing metal with an acid solution.
7. Classify the reaction types (acid/base, redox, or precipitation reaction) and able to write the molecular,
total (complete) ionic, and net ionic equations.
8. Identify an elements from its visible line spectrum using spectroscope.
9. Understand the state function enthalpy and the change, △H (Constant Pressure cCalorimetry).
10. Draw Lewis structure to predict the geometric shapes of molecules and ions.
11. Understand the state function internal energy and the change, △E (Constant Volume Calorimetry).
12. Understand the nature of polymer/hydrogel and the applications in drug discovery.
Pedagogy
The course will employ brief introduction, demonstration, and team experiments. Students will learn to
be critical of their observation and collected data. Student must be quantitative in their
measurements and develop good laboratory practice and techniques that acquires an appreciation
of chemicals and safety guidelines as well as the necessity of proper disposal of test solutions.
Student will understand the chemical principles by hands-on experiences with greater appreciation of
the principles, data collection and observation that are encountered for the experiment.
Course Requirements
Each wet lab begins with check-in by signing an attendance sheet. Failure to check-in will result ZERO
grade for the lab period. Then, a short introduction including the safety precautions and experimental
techniques will be given prior to the experiment. Attendance of this period is mandatory. Any student who
misses part of this period will NOT be allowed to proceed the experiment.
Student must wear safety goggles, proper clothing/shoes/hair to perform the experiment. All
belongings must be placed in the bottom cabinet of the bench area. Absolutely no eating, drinking, and
chewing are allowed. Laboratory safety rules in detail are attached.
All students will work with a parter as a team. However, all experimental data, observations, errors,
problems, and troubleshooting must be INDIVIDUALLY recorded during the course of the experiment. A team
of students must complete all required lab work, dispose the chemical waste, clean up equipment/work area at
the end of each laboratory period. Students need TA’s or instructor’s permission to check out. Failure to check-
out will result ZERO grade for the lab period as well.
Make-up lab will be provided ONLY IF it is an unavoidable absence that is a valid excuse from the school
officials. Students who need a make-up lab MUST provide a valid written excuse note (e-mail) WITHIN ONE
WEEK of the absence for the make-up arrangement.
