Using Device Manager to Configure
the SEL-2488 Clock
Wellington Oliveira
INTRODUCTION
The SEL-2488 Satellite-Synchronized Network Clock receives Global Navigation Satellite System
(GNSS) time signals and distributes precise time via multiple output protocols, including IRIG-B,
Network Time Protocol (NTP), and Precise Time Protocol (PTP). You can use an internet browser
to configure the SEL-2488; however, it is necessary to be connected to the device to make these
configurations. This application guide offers a method of configuring the SEL-2488 by using
Device Manager in ACSELERATOR QuickSet® SEL-5030 software to allow the user to send the
settings later.
SYSTEM PROGRAMMING
Follow these steps to perform the offline configuration of the SEL-2488 in Device Manager.
Step 1. Open QuickSet and select Device Manager, as shown in Figure 1. Device Manager is
a plug-in to QuickSet that interacts directly with the ACSELERATOR Database that is
either local to the user’s PC or accessible from a network location.
Figure 1 Opening Device Manager
Step 2. In the window that appears (Figure 2), enter the server name, username, and password
for the ACSELERATOR Database. After entering your credentials, select Log on. The
default Device Manager credentials are the username “admin” and no password.

Step 5. Select the latest settings version number (the number on the bottom of the list) and
select OK, as shown in Figure 5.
Note that the settings version number consists of the first three numbers listed in the
firmware string after the Z character. For example, for the firmware string SEL-2488-
R104-V1-Z005001-D20181031, the QuickSet settings version is 005.
NOTE: If after sending the settings to the SEL-2488, you upgrade your firmware causing your settings
version to change, you will need to create a new SEL-2488 in your connection directory and read the
settings from the upgraded clock. This will provide you with an updated settings file for the SEL-2488.
Figure 5 Selecting the Version Number
Step 6. To configure the clock, double-click SEL-2488 in Connection Explorer to open the
workspace, and select Edit, as shown in Figure 6.

Step 7. In the Device tab, enter the full part number of your device and select Apply, as shown
in Figure 7. A warning box can appear with the following message: “A part number
change may cause settings to be modified.” Select OK and then select Apply again.
Figure 7 Configuring the Part Number
Step 8. Select the Connection tab, and select Edit. In the Host IP Address field, configure the
IP address used by Device Manager to send the settings to the SEL-2488. Because the
connection to the clock will be made through the front Ethernet port (ETH F), we will
configure this field with the default IP address of the ETH F port, which is 192.168.1.2.
Enter this IP address and select Apply, as shown in Figure 8.

Step 11. To configure the local user accounts, enter the following settings, as shown in
Figure 11:
➢ Insert the user’s name in the UM_USERNAME_ST1 field.
➢ Define the user’s role in the UM_USERROLE_ST1 field by using the selection
box. The SEL-2488 allows the following four user roles:
➣ Administrator: Users have full access to the device.
➣ Engineer: Users have access to most settings and information on the device.
The main exception to this is user account management (User Manager role).
➣ User Manager: Users have access to manage users on the device. Access to
other settings is restricted.
➣ Monitor: Users have read-only access to most of the device settings.
➢ Enter the password in the UM_PASSWORD_ST1 field.
➢ Define if this user’s password will be complex or simple in the
UM_COMPLEXPASSWORD_ST1 field.
➢ Select OK.
To include more users, repeat Step 10 and Step 11.

Step 12. Double-click the IP Configuration Settings error. The software expands the Network
Management > IP Configuration settings option, as shown in Figure 12. Under IP
Configuration, there are several different groups of settings: General Network Set-
tings, Port F Settings, Port 1 Settings, Port 2 Settings, Port 3 Settings, Port 4 Settings,
and PRP: Port 1, 2 Settings.
Figure 12 Configuring General Network Settings and Port F Settings
Step 13. In the General Network Settings group, configure the NI_HOSTNAME_ST,
NI_DOMNAME_ST, and NI_DEFAULT_GW_4_ST settings according to your pref-
erence.
The Port F settings come with the default IP address of 192.168.1.2/24 and the HTTPS
protocol enabled by default.
Date Code 20210916 SEL Application Guide 2021-28

Step 14. In the Port 1 Settings group, shown in Figure 13, use the field NI_ENABLE_IP_1_ST
to enable or disable the Ethernet interface ETH 1 on the rear panel and the field
NI_ALIAS_IP_1_ST to configure an alias for the same interface.
The NI_ADDR_IP_1_ST settings refer to the address of the Ethernet interface. The
“/qq” syntax refers to the Classless Inter-Domain Routing (CIDR) shorthand represen-
tation of the subnet mask. The CIDR value of 24 refers to the 255.255.255.0 subnet
mask.
The HTTPS, NTP, and SNMP settings can be enabled on the interface in the
NI_HTTPS_EN_1_ST, NI_NTPSERVER_EN_1_ST, and NI_SNMP_EN_1_ST
fields, respectively. After defining the settings for this group, select Apply, as shown
in Figure 13.
Repeat this step to configure the Ethernet interfaces ETH 2, ETH 3, and ETH 4.
NOTE: The PRP (Parallel Redundancy Protocol) settings can affect ETH 1 and ETH 2. When enabled, the
SEL-2488 changes the mode of operation of the physical Ethernet ports ETH 1 and ETH 2. The ports become
the LAN A and LAN B ports for connection to the PRP network. For further details, check Section 24:
Parallel Redundancy Protocol (PRP) of the SEL-2488 instruction manual, available at selinc.com.

To modify other outputs, select Edit and repeat Step 15 and Step 16.
Figure 15 Time Output Settings
Step 17. NTP is available on the four rear interfaces. The service requires an IP address to
operate, so the interface must be configured with an IP address and enabled to allow
NTP Server for that interface. To configure the NTP mode, expand the Time Manage-
ment > Network Time Protocol (NTP) option. Select Edit at the bottom of the
screen q. Select the Ethernet interface w, and select Edit e, as shown in Figure 16.

Step 18. The system allows enabling multicast and broadcast modes. We can leave those two
modes disabled because we typically configure the IEDs in the substation to operate as
NTP clients that communicate with the SEL-2488 that is acting as an NTP server.
Select Disabled for the multicast and broadcast fields, as shown in Figure 17, and
select OK.

Step 20. In the window that appears, select Enabled in the PTP_ENABLED_ST1 field to
enable the PTP protocol on the selected Ethernet interface and choose the PTP profile
in the PTP_COMM_PROFILE_ST1 field, as shown in Figure 19.
Each PTP profile configures and locks the settings based on requirements of the asso-
ciated standard. For further details, consult the SEL-2488 instruction manual, avail-
able at selinc.com.

Step 23. In your browser’s address bar, enter https://192.168.1.2 to view the device commis-
sioning page, as shown in Figure 22.
Figure 22 Creating a New User Account in a New SEL-2488
Step 24. Enter the account credentials for the first administrative user. This requires both a
username and password. You must enter the password twice to ensure that it is cor-
rectly typed because the password characters are hidden. The initial user account pass-
word must be a complex passphrase that is at least eight characters in length and
includes at least one character from each of the following categories: uppercase letters,
lowercase letters, numerical digits, and special characters.
Step 25. Select Submit to finish commissioning. When the page reloads, you can log in as the
administrative user. Device Manager will use these credentials to send the settings to
the SEL-2488.
