CHAPTER I
BACKGROUND OF THE
According to Gioietta Kuo (2019), the world is supporting an
unsustainable 7.7 billion with an annual rise of 1% homelessness.
The future prospect is nothing but horrific: 8.6 billion in just
10 years’ time 2030, 9.7 billion in 2050 and 11.5 billion in
2100. Is the world livable by then? According to U.S. Department
of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) 2018 Annual Homeless
Assessment Report to Congress, an estimated 553,000 people
experienced homelessness on a single 2018 night. Replacing your
roof can make a dent in your wallet, and as a homeowner, you want
to keep the bills to a minimum.
A proper sealant extends your roof’s life expectancy and
minimizes the repairs needed on a regular basis. Homelessness is
the condition and social category of people having no regular
house or dwelling because they cannot afford, pay for, or are
otherwise unable to maintain regular, safe, and adequate housing,
causes of homelessness such as poverty, no education,
legal/criminal problem, mental/health problem, leaders ‘attitude,

unemployment, and no public assistance; while risk factors are
increase criminal cases, vehicular accident, bitten by animals,
and eviction. In the Philippines is caused by a variety of
reasons, including lost jobs, insufficient income or lack of a
stable job, domestic violence, and loss of home due to a natural
disaster.
This chapter deals with the introduction and the background of
the plant, Antipolo (Artocarpus blancoi) and its sealing
property. It included the scope, limitations and delimitations.
Background of the problem. The Antipolo tree (Artocarpus blancoi)
is a species of a tree of the mulberry family native to parts of
south and south Asia. It’s suited in tropical lands. Its fruit is
less than about 25cm (10 in) in diameter. The Antipolo tree is
very popular in many parts of the world. The Antipolo tree is
native to Philippines.
Antipolo tree sap contains Latex that can also be found in
other roof sealants. It also contains 82.6to 86.4 % resins that
can be a component in making varnish. On the importance of
sealant, the function and value of this sticky stuff plays a very
important role in the school. Roof sealants are mostly used in

roof to prevent water getting in. Nowadays, many houses have
problems with their roofs, including rusting and holes. This can
be a big problem like easy breakage due to low quality roof.
Having breakages of roofs, it is difficult to find a solution in
this problem, now that almost all of us have financial problems
and its expensive for us to use such a thing like volcaseal
(Adamos et al., 2014).
Sealant is known to be a viscous material which turns solid
after application and purpose being, prevention from dust, smoke,
gas, air, water and other unwanted materials. There are Many
types of sealants which are used to protect different kind of
surfaces like dry walls and roof from external damages. A sealant
is also used for flat and sloping roofs, so that they are
protected for years. The forms in which these sealants are found
can be rubber, tar, paint, concrete, or any other durable
covering material that can withstand external pressure. A roof
sealant will assist in keeping all water out until it has the
opportunity to drain. Sloped roofs have less problem with
standing water for obvious reasons, but some many still
benefit from a waterproof roof sealant coating. If your roof

is older, this extra barrier will prolong its life by
repelling excess water.
STATEMENT OF THE P
ROBLEM
General Objective
This study will aim to determine the Acceptability of
Antipolo tree sap as an alternative roof sealant.
Specific Objectives
Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions:
1. What is the effect in using Antipolo tree sap as an
alternative roof sealant in terms of:
a. Viscosity
b. Weatherability
c. Water resistance
2. Which of the following concentrations is more effective in
developing a roof sealant?

a. 350 grams of Antipolo sap
b. 400 grams of Antipolo sap
c. 450 grams of Antipolo sap
3. Is there a significant effect in using Antipolo tree sap as
an alternative roof sealant?

SCOPE
SCOPE AND DELIMIT
This study which entitled Antipolo sap as an additive
component in making roof sealant that has a primary objective
which is to manipulate an upgraded type of using the Antipolo sap
as the additive ingredient to enhance the quality of adherence of
the sealant considering its factor the stickiness and lengthen of
rim to stick.
SIGNIFICANCE OF TH
E STUDY
This study will provide a brief description of the various
significance of the study. This will benefit the following:
Environment. If proven effective, this study may help the
environment by reducing the use of petroleum-based roof sealants.
The problem caused by petroleum-based sealants like landfills and
ocean wastes causing the extinction of different species of
animals.

VMSDFI. If proven effective, this study may help the homeless
people federation by giving a much more affordable roof sealant
for the masses it may help those in need in the federation.
DOST. If proven effective, this study would benefit the DOST by
giving information of possible roof sealant and any more possible
replacement for petroleum-based sealant.
HOMEOWNERS. If proven effective, this study may help homeowners
as it is more convenient to use a roof sealant than buying a new
roof if the former roof is not severely damage, by this the home
owners can save money from buying a new roof.
ASPIRING RESEARCH. This will help the future researchers to seek
some ideas or to recognize the topic more and, this study can help
future researchers to be guided by our data and proceed with
other procedures and different outcomes for the improvement of
the study.
