II. TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION
A. Rationale/Significance
The coconut also known as the ‘tree of life” is one of the most important crops in the
Philippines. It is considered a major export, contributing 3.6% of the country’s gross value-added
(GVA) in agriculture, next to banana, corn and rice (PSA 2019). Likewise, in Sorsogon, coconut is
considered one of the main sources of income since the number of coconut farmers across the 14
municipalities and one city of Sorsogon is estimated at 50,000, tilling over 90,000 hectares as
previous data revealed as mentioned in the article posted by Sahlie Lacson.
In the study conducted by Monica B. Castillo and Princess Alma B. Ani entitled “The
Philippine Coconut Industry: Status, Policies and Strategic Directions for Development”, this
revealed that despite the continued boom of coconut exports, there has been no significant
improvement in the coconut industry for the past years. Thus, given the current state of the
FM-RES-001 Revision. No. 01 Effective August 15, 2021
industry and veto of the coconut levy bills, the study emphasized that other issues should be
acted in relation to positioning of the coconut industry. Also, a strategic direction could be the
continued development of coconut and another is to focus investments in producing and or
developing other coconut products.
The Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) has major programs and projects that aim to
provide a holistic approach in delivering interventions to provide access to additional income
sources for the coconut farmers. The PCA also mention that this project will provide a venue for
the transition of coconut farmers from subsistence farming to agribusinessizing, primarily for
primary processing. This introduction of cocopreneurship to farmers intends to contribute to the
desired state of increase income for farmers.
In Sorsogon, there are numbers of established Small-Medium-Enterprise (SME) focused
on coconut shell products. These offer variety craftworks such as bowls or serving-spoons, vases,
teapots, ice-cream cups, pen stand, lampshade, jewelleries, and others. Thus, this project will
conduct an in-depth study on the status of coconut shell products to assess and innovate and to
ensure that the coconut shell products industry have stable markets and could provide a long-
lasting and viable livelihood for the communities. Moreover, this study also provides an overview
of the current coconut shell products supply chain in the province, quantity and quality of
products, as well as analysis of constraints to increase the rate of production and enhance skills.
B. Objectives
This study aims to innovate the coconut shell products as alternative source of income in the
province. Specifically, it aims to:
1. Determine the current status of coconut shell products in the province in terms of;
a. quality
b. market/income
c. linkages
d. manpower
e. equipment
f. related-trainings attended
2. Determine the problems encountered in terms of;
a. quality
b. market/income
c. linkages
d. manpower
e. equipment
f. related-trainings attended
3. Determine what innovation or programs could be offered to address the problems
encountered and enhance the coconut shell products in the province.
C. Methodologies
This study will utilize the descriptive method of research hence this will gather data using
survey-questionnaire checklist. The questionnaire is divided into three (3) parts, the first part is to
determine the current status of coconut shell products in the community in terms of; a. production, b.
income, c. manpower, d. equipment, and d. related-trainings attended. Second is to determine the
problems encountered in the current status of coconut shell products in the community in terms of
the mentioned variables, and the last part is the program/ projects that can be proposed for the
innovation of coconut shell products.
This study will use frequency count, weighted mean, and ranking as statistical tools. And to
interpret the results Likert scale will be applied. Also, before the conduct of the survey, researchers
consulted expert researchers in the Institution to validate the questionnaire.
