Ar 512 Housing: Measuring Responsiveness of Unplanned Neighborhoods

The document analyzes the legibility of Tuguegarao City Poblacion based on Kevin Lynch's theories of urban legibility. It assesses the area based on Lynch's qualities of legibility such as simplicity, continuity, dominance, and singularity. It also examines Lynch's elements that form the image of the city including paths, edges, districts, nodes, and landmarks. Overall, the analysis finds that the layout of Tuguegarao City Poblacion has good legibility, with simple and clearly defined paths, visually prominent edges, and easily identifiable landmarks. Some recommendations are provided to improve continuity within interior roads and clarify intersections.

I. BRIEF INTRODUCTION
Urban responsiveness would ideally be a situation where the users of the urban
environments are provided with a setting which is rich in both opportunity and choice. The
success of urban responsiveness within a particular city is directly dependent on the end
users. (Peshali Perera, 2012) Legibility as one of the measures for urban responsiveness
must be taken into consideration. The urban elements that builds up a city must be easily
identifiable by the people. Kevin Lynch’s five elements of the city creates the image of a city
and thus making the urban environment legible. These elements are paths, edge, districts,
nodes and landmarks. Additionally, legibility can be defined as the ease with which the parts
of the city can be recognized and organized into a coherent pattern. (T, Siali, et al., 2017)
Lynch also identified the main forms and qualities that emerge from an urban layout that
contributes to the visibility, coherence, clarity and legibility. It incudes singularity, simplicity,
dominance, etc.

In this study, the researchers will observe and conduct analysis on Tuguegarao City
Poblacion from College Avenue, Mabini St., Lecaros St., Rizal St., and back to College Avenue
and in relation to its legibility.

SIMPLICITY
The urban layout of
the Tuguegarao
City Poblacion has
a simple
geometrical
pattern. It is a

CONTINUITY
The street in the
College Ave. and
Mabini St.
characterizes
continuity.It is
bounded by
schools and
universities that

DOMINANCE
The St. Peter’s and

denotes
dominance
because of its
prominence in the
neighborhood.
It can be clearly
seen along Luna St.
SINGULARITY
In this area of the
urban layout, there
is a high contrast
and
distinguishability
between the urban
objects. There is an
elementary school
across the park and
parallel to the
school is a
shopping center.

CLARITY OF
INTERSECTIONS
The first and

It exhibits a relative
clarity of

However the
intersection along
The Luna St has a
low clarity of
perception
because the street
along the Rizal is
not clearly seen
because of its in

to the angle of
intersection.

III. ASSESMENT AND RECOMMENDATIONS

The legibility of Tuguegarao City Poblacion can be assessed through qualities and image of
the city. In terms of quality, it is categorized into:
1. Simplicity- The urban form layout of the Poblacion is clearly defined and highly
perceptible. It has a simple layout and adapts a rectilinear planning.
2. Continuity- The paths that bounds around the Poblacion possess a high value of
continuance. It has a aclear traffic flow and free from any obstruction. But the interior
municipal roads have low value continuity due to vehicle obstructions that are parked
along the roads.
3. Dominance- The structure that possess a great value in terms of historical background is
visually prominent.
4. Singularity- The architectural façade of the structures is clearly defined base on its
function and use even though they are group together in a singular scene. But the
problem with this is that the function of one structure might be disturbed because they
possess contradicting use.
5. Clarity of intersections- Some intersections are clearly defined basing from its angle of
intersection, length path, width of path.
6. Motion Awareness- The edges are elements that leads the changing direction of paths
7. Visual Scope- Some roads have a wide range of visual perception form a specific origin
8. Directional Differentiation- Some paths are obstructed due to differentiate=ion of the
direction of paths

In terms of image of the city, it is categorized into:

1. Paths- Paths are legible and clearly defined

2. Edges- The edges are visually prominent and leads the paths
3. Districts- The structures are group together in relation with their function and use
4. Nodes- The nodes serves as a terminating junction or concentrations within the area
5. Landmarks- landmarks are easily identifiable and is visually perceptible
