new chapter in your learnings.

Let us be guided first, on how we are going to

accomplish today’s lesson. First, determine the
feminist and Marxist approaches' key tenets, then
apply feminist and Marxist perspectives to a literary
selection and lastly, write a feminist and Marxist
critique of a literary selection.

B. DISCUSSION
PROPER
PRESENTATION A literary piece cannot be sufficiently interpreted
with a single approach in the previous lessons you
have learned about structuralist or formalist
approaches now it is time for you to explore another
two literary approaches, the Marxist and feminist
approach in which we tackle in our activity a while
back.
DISCUSSION Let us first discuss the Marxist approach.

Are you familiar with the Marxist approach? Can It’s a materialistic
anyone share his/her ideas? philosophy that
attempts to interpret
the world based on
concrete, the
natural world
around us, and the
society in which we
live.
Alright, Thank you.

Remember that Marxist idea derives its name from

Karl Marx, the German philosopher and co-author
Friedrich Engels who are the founder of Marxism
theory which they argue that all history is about a
struggle between the poor and the helpless. Meaning
Marxism its sought to find the conflict between the
social classes existing in the work whose primary
focus is to know who are the characters that
powerful and less powerful. Marxism deals with
a form of inequality that arises from the class
dynamics of capitalism.

Have you watched some Filipino drama series that

somehow shows the division of classes, Isn’t it’s Got to believe in

Probinsyano,
Can you give some examples of drama series that Forevermore, etc.
Marxist approach? For example

Awesome, those are some examples of timeless

Filipino dramas that show the classification of social
status, majority of these is the unexpected love
between poor women into a rich businessman which
tackles the stereotyping of class that a poor woman
is not for the rich man levels. It’s sad right, but most
of these have a happy ending story.

Marxist focuses on power struggles of the characters

this concerns class differences economic as well as
the implications and complications of the capitalist
system moreover it is interested in answering the
overarching question, whom does it benefit the
elite? the middle class? Marx’s critics are also
interested in how the lower or working classes are
oppressed in everyday life and in literature.

Marx and Engels identified six successive

stages (including one transitional stage) in a
society's development:
 Primitive Communism, as seen in co-
operative tribal societies.
 Slave Society, which develops when the
tribe becomes a city-state, and aristocracy is
born.
 Feudalism, where aristocracy is the ruling
class, and merchants develop into capitalists.
 Capitalism, where capitalists are the ruling
class, and create and employ the
true working class.
 Socialism (or "Dictatorship of the
Proletariat"), where the workers gain class
consciousness, overthrow the capitalists
and take control over the state.
 Communism, where
a classless and stateless society has evolved.

Did you get it? Yes, Ma’am.

Let’s now discuss the Feminist Approach.

When we say feminist what comes to your mind? The feminist theory

the story it advocates gender equality, which means
it sought to find the conflict between gender

form of inequality which is the Feminist theory

gender inequality
and focuses on

candidates used, which claims that they’re power relations,
phenomenal women? and sexuality.

The word Phenomenal means are remarkable or

exceptional, especially exceptionally good. Thus, a
phenomenal woman means an extraordinary or
stunning woman. The feminist approach advocates
gender equality in which some aspects of our
culture are inherently patriarchal or male dominated.

What do we mean by the term male- dominated?

Yes, Ma’am.
Good Job!
This male-dominated society is also called a
patriarchal society. Patriarchy took firm root in
society, and what is probably worse is that it had
blended so firmly in the mindsets of both men and
women, that nobody thought there was anything
wrong with it.

Somehow patriarchy means ‘the rule of the father’.

Are you familiar with this? At our home majority is A man is superior
in a patriarchal family, which it is the father who to the women.

regarding everyone else in the family.

cannot do. Ever since before we’ve been battling
with gender equality, This shows in Maggie Humm
and Rebecca Walker in 2010 “three waves of

in the promotion of equal contract and property of
women and also in the ownership of married women
either properties or rights to their children, this also
includes gaining political power of rights to vote.

The second wave – in the 20th Century, primarily

focus on the civil rights movement of women and
justice in a political view, in which women gain
equal pay in labor.

Lastly, the third wave – 21st Century up to Present

which advocates the Gender and Sexuality, the
movements where women fights the patriarchy in
society and stereotype of men to women.

Did you follow? Any question?

Alright. Let’s move forward in the ideology of
feminism.

Based on the Ideology feminism can be divided by

five, we have the liberal, Radical, Marxist, Socialist
and Black feminism.

Liberal Feminism – An equality in all aspects.

Persuades that women have the same capability and Yes, Ma’am.
ability same with men. None Ma’am.
Radical Feminism – A strong opinion that men are
their enemies so they cannot live with them.
Marxist Feminism – Gender class, women get the
salary lower than men because labor women have
lower class than men.
Socialist Feminism – social construction of society
towards women capitalist system that the ideology
that woman’s primary role is in the home to keep
down her wages and rights as a worker.
Black Feminism – the hardest movement because
the oppression not only comes from white men but
also from black men.

Marx's critics are also interested in how the lower or

working classes are oppressed in everyday life and
in literature. While the feminist or the gender
relationships of characters in the story advocates
gender equality and examines culture towards
women. To sum it up here is a comparison chart of
the typical questions to use diagram (Present chart)

In the first column, these are the questions found in

the Marxist approach: Whom does it benefit if the
work or effort is accepted successfully believed
etc.? What is the social class of the author? Which
class does the work claim to represent? What values
does it reinforce? What values does it subvert? What
conflict can be seen between the values the world
champions and those it portrays? What social
classes do the characters represent? How do
characters from different classes interact or conflict?

In the second column, these are the questions in the

feminist approach. Is the author male or female? Is
the text narrated by a male or female? What types of
roles do women have in the text are the female
characters the protagonists or secondary and minor
characters? Do any stereotypical characterizations of
women appear? How does the author's culture
influence his or her attitude? What are the attitudes
of male characters towards the female characters?

GENERALIZATIO The Marxist and Feminist theories have various

N comparing and contrasting perspectives. Marxism
and Feminism are both conflict theory; Feminism is
conflict between genders, unlike Marxism, which is
between different classes. Although they are two
different theories, Feminism and Marxism have
many characteristics in common. Both claim that
society is divided into the powerful and the
powerless. They both also fight against the ruling
system of the time, and believe that if workers come
to be alert of their situation, it leads to a rebellion; as
well as some feminists claim, a call for growth, and
this change in society can help for a better future
C. POST-
READING
ACTIVITIES
APPLICATION For your task: Critical reading
Read the poem below.
‘If we must die’ by Claude McKay

If we must die, let it not be like hogs

Hunted and penned in an inglorious spot,
While round us bark the mad and hungry dogs,
Making their mock at our accursed lot.
If we must die, O let us nobly die,
So that our precious blood may not be shed
In vain; then even the monsters we defy
Shall be constrained to honor us though dead!
O kinsmen! we must meet the common foe!
Though far outnumbered let us show us brave,
And for their thousand blows deal one death-blow!
What though before us lies the open grave?
Like men we’ll face the murderous, cowardly pack,
Pressed to the wall, dying, but fighting back!
