3. Coating System

4. Surface Preparation
4.1 All loosen zinc dust coating must be removed by mechanical tools. Surface to be
reconditioned with paints containing zinc dust shall be clean, dry, and free of oil, grease, preexisting
paint, and corrosion by-products.

4.2 All damaged areas of coatings shall be power tool cleaned according to SSPC SP 3 and/or ISO St 3,
but it is recommended to clean to SSPC SP 11 for obtaining the optimal prepared surface. All cleaned
surface to be coated must not be polished by mechanical tools, and the original surface anchor profile
shall be maintained or restored.

4.3 To ensure a smooth reconditioned coating can be achieved, the s urface preparation of da maged
area of coatings shall extend into the u ndamaged c oatings. Featheredging the ar ea surrounding the
damaged area a minimum 1 inch (2.5cm) into the sound coatings as the below sketch map shows. Take
care n ot to da mage to o w ide an area of intact coatings, and app ly touch-up pr imer beyond the
damaged areas with the manufacturer’s recommended organic zinc filled epoxy.

3/7
4.4 Experience shows that in general, organic zinc-rich primer shall be tolerant of marginal surface
preparation to repair the damaged zinc layer in conformance with ASTM A780. Spray or brush-apply
the paints containing zinc powder onto the prepared surface.

4.5 Prior to succeeding painting, all surface to be reconditioned must be solvent cleaned according to
SSPC SP1.

4.6 All intact surface not to be reconditioned and all surrounding sensitive equipments (e.g. dial, bolts,
marks and etc) must be prote cted from damage b y surface prepa ration and paint application.
Appropriate shielding, masking, use of filter media, non-absorbing tape, polythene sheeting and other
protective measures shall be employed by contractor to protect such equipment.

5. Working Procedure of Coating Repair and Touching-up

5.1 Touch up procedures for different damaged coats
The coating is light damaged, not deep to substrate and re-rusting:
Sand or grind the dam aged co ating area with 80 -mesh sa ndpaper t o e xpose f resh
coating, cleaned with proper thinner, then touched up with the specified coatings as the
specified DFT.

The coating is damaged to steel substrate and rusted:

Power tools can be used for grinding rotary grinders, discs are recommended to fulfill
with SSPC-SP11/ISO St 3 However, rotary brush is not r ecommended bec ause of its
polishing tendency on s teel surface to a ffect coating adhesion. cleaned with proper

4/7
thinner, then touched up with the specified coatings as the specified DFT.

5.2 All coated items shall be handled carefully to minimize damage to the coating.

5.3 All climate control requirements should be same as it in n ew construction painting. No coa ting
application shall be done if the relative humidity is more than 85% and when the steel temperature is
less than 3 above the dew point. Paint applicat ion is not all owed when raining, snowing, water or
ice on the touch up areas, or heavy fog around.

5.4 Brush only used f or sm all area, an d m ore c oat required to reach specified DFT. Airless
spraying shall be recommended in the wide areas for touch-up.

5.5 During touch-up inside, sufficient ventilation and lighting must be provided.

5.6 Final coating surface should be clean, smooth, and free of blistering, runs, pinholes, cracking,
and drying spraying.

6. Ambient Condition for Paint Application

Pay particular attention to the following items during painting application, stop painting except
special requirement.

The temperature of steel surface or paint is less than 3 below the dew point temperature, or
the ambient relative humidity is above 85%.

When steel surface temperature is higher than 40 (Excluding paint manufacturer specified).

When air temperature is lower than 5

Predefine the bad weather in two hours when over-coating outdoor.

When moisture formed on surface of structure under raining, condensation and frost etc.

When the effective illumination less than 500lux during paint application.

7. WFT and DFT Inspection
7.1 Measure the wet film thickness regularly using a wet film gauge (comb gauge). Make sure to have
cleaning towels are a vailable to c lean the comb gauge. WFT must b e measured immediately after
application since evaporation of solvents will affect t he rea ding if not p erformed at onc e. WFT
measurements are specified to be carried out alongside checking of paint consumption. These should
take into consideration specified dry film thickness and volume solids of the paint.

7.2 DFT measurement shall be carried ou t after c ompletion of and s ufficient drying of each coat
applied. Recommended, non-destructive methods for the determination of DFT on metallic, magnetic
and non-magnetic substrates are described in SSPC PA2.

8. Handling, Storage and Delivery

All structural steel shall be handled, stored and packed in a manner to preserve protective coatings in
the best possible condition, and to reduce the degree of repair work required. The items shall not be
moved and handling shall be kept to an absolute minimum until coatings have completely cured and
reached sufficient hardness t o resist handling d amage, genera lly i n accordan ce with t he curing
schedule from coating manufacturer’s recommendation.

9. HSE
9.1 Areas where work is in progress must be clearly id entified. Haz ard warnings showing
“EXPLOSION RISK” a nd “NO S MOKING” m ust be placed clearly visible during coat ing operations
and shall not be removed before the concentration of flammable is too low to cause a fire hazard. The
working area shall be equipped with suitable fire extinguisher, e.g. the dry chemical foam or CO2 fire
extinguishers.

9.2 Ensure adequate ventilation during painting application, maintain solvent vapour levels below the
Lower Explosive Limit. If skin contact, wash completely skin with warm water, soap, and recognized
skin cleanser. If eyes contact, irrigate copiously with clean fresh water for at least 10 min. and holding
the eyelids apart and seek medical attention. Strongly recommend to equipping personnel protective
equipments, e.g. sp ecified glass, m ask, glo ves, wor k clothes and cl ean the exposures immediately

6/ 7
after working.

9.3 All work involving the application and use of paint product shall be performed in compliance with
all relevant national Health, S afety Environmental standards and regulation. All the surplus
materials a nd em pty containers shall be dis posed of in accordance with appropriate r egional
regulations /legislation.

9.4 The paint should be stored in dry, shaded condition away from sources of heat and ignition. The
warehouse shall be equipped with the suitable fire extinguisher, e.g. the Dry chemical foam or CO 2
fire extinguishers.

9.5 The paint products are intended for using only by professional applicators in industrial situations
in accordance with the advice given on Product Data Sheet/Book, the Material Safety Data Sheet and
on the containers. Paint shall not be used without reference to the Material Safety Data Sheet which
International Protective coatings will provided.
