The teacher will call nine students to rearrange the jigsaw puzzle of Robert Burns, afterwards
the teacher will discuss the author of Auld Lang Syne who is Robert Burns with the class.

C. Presentation/ Discussion

Robert Burns is Scotland’s national poet, by custom and

tradition. He began writing poetry and songs at an early age
and quickly became famous across the country for his
writings.

Burns wrote about many things, not only Scotland. Indeed,

despite having never visited America, in 1784 he wrote the
Ballad on the American War and today several US cities,
including New York and Denver, have erected statues to
Burns. Even Abraham Lincoln was a lifelong fan of the Scots
poet, memorizing his poems by heart, attending a Burns
night celebration, and writing a toast to the poet describing
him as a ‘genius’.

Burns first wrote down “Auld Lang Syne” in 1788,

but the poem did not appear in print until shortly after his death in 1796. It was first published in volume
five of James Johnson’s Scots Musical Museum. Burns, a major contributor to the compilation, claimed
that the words of “Auld Lang Syne” were taken “from an old man’s singing.” However, the song has
been associated with Burns ever since. As published by Johnson, the lyrics were set to a different tune
from the one that later became familiar. George Thomson was a music publisher who helped Burns to
make his poem Auld Lang Syne become a song.
The lyrics of “Auld Lang Syne” are in the Scots language. The title, translated literally into
standard English, is Old Long Since. The words can be interpreted as since long ago or for old times’
sake. The lyrics are about old friends having a drink and recalling adventures they had long ago. There is
no specific reference to the new year.

The teacher will give the students the lyrics of Auld Lang Syne and play it in front of the class.

F. Abstraction
The teacher will discuss with students the meaning of the Auld Lang Syne and each
stanza.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,

And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne!

Chorus:
For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne.
We’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

And surely ye’ll be your pint-stowp!

And surely I’ll be mine!
And we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

We twa hae run about the braes,

And pou’d the gowans fine;
But we’ve wander’d mony a weary fit,
Sin’ auld lang syne.

We twa hae paidlet I’ the burn,

Frae morning sun till dine;
But seas between us braid hae roar’d
Sin’ auld lang syne.

And there’s a hand, my trusty fiere!

And gie’s a hand o’ thine!
And we’ll tak a right gude-willie waught,
For auld lang syne.
