I. Instruction: Write a reflection paper, choose three (2) movies below, determine
the culture indicated in the movie.
1.Life Of Pi (2012)
The Life Of Pi is an adventure drama movie from 2012 which was directed by Ang
Lee, who is a Taiwanese filmmaker. The culture indicated in this movie is Indian
culture. This movie is all about the story of a young man who is stranded with a
Bengal tiger named Richard Parker on a lifeboat for months. Pi begins to explore
Christianity, Islam, and Hinduism. He’s knowledge of three religions allowed him to
achieve something that seemed impossible, like living with a Bengal tiger on a boat
in the middle of the ocean. Through his religious beliefs, he connects with the
Gods, animals, and water as he goes through with his journey. While I was watching
a movie, I was impressed by Pi's faith in God. I am amazed because his faith in God
did not waver and, because of his faith and trust in God, he did not lose hope to
survive. I realized that everything I went through cannot be compared to what Pi
went through. This movie made me realize that no matter what hardships you go
through, keep your faith and trust in God. One of the moral lessons in this movie
is, don’t give up. What it is you’re committed to, there will be obstacles along
the path. At times, it may even seem impossible. But when you truly believe in
achieving your goal, you can’t give up, no matter how daunting the outlook is.
2.Slumdog Millionaire (2008)
I’m not familiar with this film, so I researched what it is all about. Based
on my research, Slumdog Millionaire is a film about a young man who originates from
a slum in India and becomes a successful contestant in the widely popular Indian
version of ‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire?’ The movie, based on a popular novel,
explores his life history, leading to the background of his success in the show. I
also researched the culture indicated in this movie. “Slumdog Millionaire” is based
in India, a nation that was once controlled and run by the British Empire. Despite
British colonialism in India ending in 1947, many aspects of British culture
remained, including the language, pop culture, and television.
As I watch the plot summary of the film, all I can say is that the film is
about love, betrayal, friendship and hope. The love of Jamal for Latika. The
friendship of Jamal, Latika and Salim. When Salim betrayed Javed, and the hope of
Jamal to see Latika again, so he decided to join WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE. I
also see the raw emotions in the film and, while watching the movie, I realized
that I can compare myself to the characters in the film because just like them, I
also experienced friendship, betrayal, hope and especially love. Like Jamal, my
abilities are judged by other people too. I'm in awe of Jamal because with
everything he's been through, he's still strong. I learned from this show to always
believe in yourself, even if other people don't believe in you.
