Introduction
Generally, the term “drug” applies to any stimulating or depressing substance that can be addictive. Drug abuse, also
called substance abuse, is a disorder that is characterized by a destructive pattern of using a substance that leads to
significant problems. Teens are increasingly engaging in drug abuse that includes stimulants, prescription and over the
counter medication.
Goal:
Jordan has one of the youngest populations globally, with 63% of its population under 30 years, increasing the risk of drug
use. The Anti-Narcotics Department past Director Brig. Anwar Tarawneh confirmed that increase in drug abuse in Jordan
amounted to 32% in 2018, where 47% of the users were between the ages of 18 and 22 years and 20,000 people were
arrested for drug abuse. As part of the national drug awareness campaign, “My Hand in Your Hand”, you will be presenting
to teenagers about the impact of a common drug on the body, the science behind addiction and how science can be used
to treat addiction.
Role:
You are part of the task force that established the National Centre for the Rehabilitation of Addicts (NCRA)
Audience:
Students in grades 8 to 12
Situation:
You were selected to present to high school students on ONE of the following drugs.
1) Anabolic steroids 2) Androstenedione – 3) Benzodiazepine 4) Branched chain
used by athletes amino acids
5) Codeine 6) Creatine supplement 7) Crystal Meth 8) DXM cough syrup

3
Your presentation should target the following:
1) Outline the source of this chosen drug – where is it obtained from and/or how is it made.
2) State statistics on how common this drug is in Jordan and/or worldwide.
3) Explain how the chosen drug disrupts the body, specifying the organ system(s) that are most affected.
4) Describe the effect this drug has on behaviour.
5) Describe how one becomes addicted to this drug.
6) Describe how science provides solution to address drug abuse and addiction.
7) Discuss the effectiveness (benefits and limitations) of science in providing a solution to address drug abuse and
addiction.
8) Discuss how science and its solution to drug abuse and addiction interacts with ONE of the following factors:
• ECONOMIC: “pertaining to the production, distribution, and use of income, wealth, and commodities.” The costs
and benefits of using science. Who receives the benefit? Is it worth it? How much will it cost? Are the benefits
worth the cost? Who pays for it - private companies, the Government, consumers?
• SOCIAL: “of or pertaining to the life, welfare, and relations of human beings in a community.” How will this
application of science affect society? Will it affect everyone or a select group? Will it unfairly affect one group of
society over another? Will everyone have access to the science/solution or only the privileged?
• POLITICAL: “involving the state or its government.” Is the government involved directly or are powerful groups
trying to influence people or the government?
• CULTURAL: “of, relating to, or associated with the behaviors and beliefs characteristic of a particular social, ethnic,
or age group.” A problem in one place is seen differently in another for reasons such as faith, tradition and
different belief values. Would people from different cultures be affected the same way or have the same opinion
on the scientific solution?
• ETHICAL: “dealing with morals or the principles of morality; pertaining to right and wrong in conduct.” Is it right
or wrong to use science in this way?
Product and performance:
• Create a PowerPoint which must be submitted on Turn-it-in through Moodle.
• Present your topic to the class in 5-7 minutes
• Information must be cited within your slides (i.e. In-text) and a works cited page must be included at the end of your
PowerPoint
• You must use images (tables, graphs, photos, etc..) . Number them: Figure 1, Figure 2, etc..., give them titles and
include full MLA-8th citation below each image
• Refer to images within presentation
• Quantitative data / statistics – must be referenced in-text

Standard for success:
Criterion D: Reflecting on the impact of science.
Tips for an effective presentation
● Font – minimum size 16 (Arial or Calibri)
● Use dark text on light background or light text on dark background Content
● Photos/Graphs/Charts/Diagrams should match what you are presenting on
● Avoid using too much audio/animation as it can be distracting
PRESENTATION (5-7 min)
● Practice beforehand and avoid reading what is exactly on the slide
● Interact with audience as much as possible by asking them questions
● Small cue cards are allowed, but eye contact with your audience is necessary.
