Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

Introduction

Rationale

With the passing of time many things have changed and advanced including

technology, society and even the teaching system. Through these changes, teachers

have created innovative ways on teaching their students and it depends on the

teacher if they want to give homework or not. Homework refers to activities or task

given by the teachers to students to be done at home or outside the school. It also

includes reading, writing or typing project, exercises or any projects (Wikipedia,

2019).

Homework helps the student since it develops the relationship of the child

towards his/her family, friends and teachers ( Voorhis & Epstein , 1998,2001) .

Furthermore, it can help teachers in determining if their students understood the

lesson and materials being used during their discussions. However it has its

negative sides like causing boredom, loss of interest, cheating, unneeded stress, and

pressure on the child that affects student's emotions, behaviors, thinking ability and

others (Cooper, 2006). Therefore, homework is both helpful and detrimental to both

the teachers and students.

The worldwide statistics states that, 55% of the teachers strongly agreed

about homework helping the students to learn while at home. While only 40% of the

student somewhat agree that homework is helpful in their studies (Walker, 2015).

On the other hand, students in Asia spend 6.28 hours in doing homework and in

Shanghai, China which is the biggest country in Asia, has the most time spent on

doing homework which resulted to a higher score in their exams (Kohli, 2014).

Whereas in the Philippines, 1 hour and 40 minutes is the average time spent in

homework and the byproduct of this is getting higher scores on their exam. This

assumes that students are advised to have frequent homework but should have

lesser time in doing it since it promotes stress and boredom (Philippine Basic

Education, 2015).

In connection, according to Deped's Memorandum No. 392 states that no

homework or assignment shall be given during weekends for pupils to enjoy their

childhood and spend quality time with their parents without being burdened by the

thought of doing lots of homework. In Cebu alone, 13 subjects are taken by students

each day. So it is expected that after school, students spend most of their remaining

time doing homework and just a small time is allotted for another things or none at

all (Furugay, 2016).

The study about the teachers who are giving homework aims to discover if

the time spent in doing homework is proportional to the learnings or things that

students get out of it. It also aims to find out the difficulties encountered by teachers

in assigning homework and when they find out that the students didn't give

importance to it. Moreover, it also accentuates the hidden struggles not only of

students but especially teachers exerting for the welfare of their students.

Correspondingly, majority of the students at Canduman National High School are

engaged to education and this is the chance to know not only the benefits of

homework but also its harmful effects.

Review of Related Literature

Related Theory

In this section, theories are cited to support the claims of this study. There

were three theories that the study is anchored on, namely Operant Conditioning by

Burrhus Frederick Skinner which explains why students willingly do their

homework. Other theories are Discovery Learning by Jerome Bruner and

Pragmatism by John Dewey which clarifies the reasons of teachers on giving

homework to their students. These three theories support the study and indicate

the reasons of students and teachers of senior high school department towards their

actions regarding homework.

Operant Conditioning by Burrhus Frederick Skinner is a method of learning

that happens when a particular individual makes an association with his or her

behavior with its corresponding reward or punishment. There are three types of

operant or responses that can follow a behavior: neutral operants, reinforcers, and

punishers. Neutral operants refer to responses from the sorroundings that neither

increase nor decrease the chances of a behavior being repeated. Reinforcers refer to

responses from the surroundings that increase the chance of a behavior being

repeated. On the other hand, punishers refer to a response from the surrounding

that decreases the likelihood of the behavior being repeated. Hence, a displeasing

behavior will be punished thus it's less likely to be repeated while a pleasant

behavior will be rewarded and will have a higher probability of being repeated.

Discovery Learning Theory by Jerome Bruner states that learners through

their past experience and existing knowledge discover facts that enables them to

resolve problems. Learning happens when one actively seeks out answers and

solutions and not just directly absorbing facts as it is. So the important outcomes of

learning include not just the concepts, categories, and problem-solving procedures

invented previously by the others, but also the ability to "invent" these things for

oneself. This will help students recall knowledge or information which they

discovered on their own. This theory believes that discovery learning encourages

active engagement, promotes motivation, promotes autonomy, responsibility and

independence, develops creativity, problem solving skills and tailors learning

experiences. That's why teachers give students homework for them to be actively

involved. Also, it makes the students to become independent by being given a

responsibility. The teacher's goal is to let the students apply the learning and

knowledge they learned at school by answering the assigned homework to them

In connection to Discovery Learning Theory, Pragmatism by John Dewey

states that knowledge comes from an active adaptation of a person to his or her

environment. On this view, inquiry should not be understood as consisting of a mind

passively observing the world and drawing from these ideas but as a process that is

done to check if something is right through actions and experiments. That’s why

various activities and homework are good for learners rather than using a

traditional teacher focused method. Moreover, students learn more through guided

experience combined with practical activities. This will help in reaching the

different learning preferences of the students. (Ann Gravells, Susan Simpson, 2014)

Related Literature

In this section, significant literatures are shown to increase the study’s

validity.

The Value of homework has been debated for a long time. Some people find it

useful since it helps students to review things learned in class and build study skills

while others see it unnecessary because it leads to burnout and discouraging

students to go to school. Homework is beneficial but only to a certain degree.

(Tirada, 2018)

For many students, Mandatory homework has consumed their weekend like

what adults consider overtime. The daily homework slog keeps many students on

the clock as long as lawyers, teachers and other overworked adults-causing anxiety

and depression. That`s the reason why many parents have suggested banning

homework from school. Another alternative are doing practice exercises and

assignment should be done at school. (Abeles, 2017)

Even if homework is very useful to students, there are still other people that

are not convinced about it. Other parents see it as a curse for their children because

it decreases the amount of sleep of a kid to take a rest. Normally, a person should

have 8 hours of sleep but because of homework it decreases to 5 hours of rest. This

means that students will not have enough rest to power their minds, he/she might

end up sleeping during class hours. (Lohmann, How Much Homework Is Too Much

for Our Teens?, 2018)

Homework has no benefits for students since younger students are not ready

to learn time management and work habits. However, educators and some parents

still think that homework is necessary to test if a student really learned or not.

Moreover, homework helps the younger students get ready for the work they’ll have

in middle school, high school or even college. With this, students can easily recall

what they’ve learned and use it as a stock knowledge. As a result, students would be

more prepared in stepping in higher grade levels of learning without hesitations.

(Tynan-Wood, 2018)

On the other hand, homework is considered to have a positive impact to

students’ learning especially in home school connection with their parents. It can

improve the relationship between parents and students, for instance, helping their

children with their homework. This can be considered as part of their family

bonding. The main goal of homework is to make the opportunity for students to

interact with their parents and to make them realize how families become special.

With this, students will have be excited to do homework and parents can also

monitor their children`s status at school and help them improve their grades.

(Atkinson, 2018)

Experts suggested having different homework techniques in both primary

and secondary students. Primary students can have a real-life example concept of

homework rather that the traditional homework exercises. While secondary

students will be concentrating for the key concept covered in their discussion. With

this method, it can decrease the amount of stress that a student can get in making

homework. (Silvester, 2017)

Related Studies

Various related studies below are shown to support the claims of the study.

The study Effectiveness of Homework, it shows the effectiveness of

homework towards students’ performance on various methods of assessments and

test. The result showed that students spend an hour on finishing the homework and

not all of them are able to complete it independently. In addition, majority of the

students stated that homework only helps them to get good grades while parents

says that homework helps most of the time but there are some homework that just

brings more work. (Shannon Carr, Maria Rocker, 2008)

In a study conducted by Stacy Townsend, it shows the influence of homework

on the vocabulary knowledge and understanding of the students. The result shows

that students who received homework had a better understanding than those who

did not. Teachers on the other hand also assess the worthiness of homework. Indeed

the survey that was taken shows that students got more understanding and

knowledge towards the subject. (Townsend, 1995)

Many students due to missing homework fail the classes. It revealed that

without punishing students’ grade, there is a need for homework policies. Students

state that homework is challenging to complete on their own while they have their

busy life. Likewise, teachers shared their own perspective through agreeing on

policies of homework because of how subjective homework and grading is. They

agreed for a policy of homework not too much emphasizing as put on overall grade.

(Huisman, 2016)

It has been shown that in this study Effect of Homework on Student

Commitment, Growth and Performance on Some Situations, the homework was able

to help students, but in other cases, regular homework did not affect the student

positively, and proved to be a negative influence. As well the increased load of

homework caused higher levels of stress and negatively affected to their attitude

towards class performances. On the other hand it was concluded that the amount of

homework was not necessarily as important as the quality of assigned homework

and the ability of the students to internalize the experience and make it meaningful

to them. (Schmitt, 2000)

Furthermore, Teachers Perspective on Homework states that teachers make

well planned assignments that combine learning and pleasure. Others used

homework as a routine to provide students drills on important activities. This study

stem from the teachers different attitudes and opinion towards homework. The

study findings indicate that teachers’ opinion and practices of homework do not

significantly vary in these settings. (Fawzy, 2012)

The related theories, literature and studies shown above support the idea of

the study. It covers the general idea that homework has great effects that students

and teachers of senior high school department experience. These previous literature

have shown the relevant ideas in order to justify the needs to address the said

problem.

Figure 1 shows the Conceptual Framework of the study in Schematic Diagram.

Figure 1 shows the schematic diagram of the theoretical –conceptual

framework of the study. Three theories are being presented in this study, the

Operant Conditioning by Burrhus Frederick Skinner, Discovery learning by Jerome

Brunner, and Pragmatism by John Dewey. The Operant conditioning was anchored

to the reason why students do their homework, while Pragmatism and Discovery

learning were anchored to the reasons why teachers give homework to their

students.Aside from the theories, the profile of the participants is also shown. The

age, sex, subject handled (for teachers), grade level (for students) is needed to know

the participant's background.Along with this concept, the goal of this study is to

know the advantages, disadvantages and the effects of homework towards the

students and teachers. After achieving the goal of this study, the researchers can

provide conclusion and recommendations that might be used in the future.

The Problem

Statement of the Problem

The principal aim of this study is to determine the benefits and

disadvantages of homework among senior high school students and teachers in

Canduman National High School for the school year 2018-2019.

Specifically, this aims to:

1. determine the profile of the participants in terms of:

1.1 sex;

1.2 grade level (for students) and

1.3 subject handled (for teachers).

2. determine the advantages & disadvantages of homework;

3. know the effects of homework towards students and teachers;

4. identify the concerns encountered by students as well as the teachers

regarding homework; and

5. know the experiences of teachers and students regarding homework.

Significance of the Study

Aside from the researchers’ personal interest, the outcome of the study would

benefit the following people:

Students.They would be able to view the effects of homework and the benefits they

can have upon finishing it. Also, they would have a chance to see not only the

effects on their side but to the teachers who give the homework and the

reason why they give the homework.

Teachers.They would be able to see the effects and benefits of homework on their

teaching and would have an understanding of how important homework is

and how it helps on managing their students.

Parents.They would be able to know why students need to do homework and the

reasons why teachers assign homework to their children. On the other hand,

parents would have knowledge on the importance and effects of homework

to their children.

Scope and Delimitations

This research studied the students who were given homework as well as the

teachers who assigned them in Canduman National High School. The primary goal of

this research is to know the benefits and effects of homework to students and

teachers at Canduman National High School. As for the participants, it covered 22

participants with the students and 10 teachers in senior high school to give their

opinions about homework in Canduman National High School. The students who

participated at the survey were the only ones who were included in the study. While

the students who did not participated in the survey were excluded from the list of

participants. Statistical treatment of data was not used since it is a qualitative

research. It mainly focuses on the teachers and students in senior high school who

are highly engaged to homework.

Definition of Terms

In order to have an easy and better understanding for the readers, the

researchers define the following terminologies according to how it is used in this

research:

Students. Refers to participants from Grade 11 and 12 participants who are

highly engaged to homework.

Teachers. The one who gave homework to students.

Homework. Things that teachers assign to students that is brought home.

Bane. Refers to the negative effects of homework towards the students.

Boon. Refers to the positive effects or benefits of homework towards students.

Chapter 2

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter shows and discusses the research design, research

environment, research participants, research procedure, data gathering procedure,

and research instrument.

Research Design

This research is a qualitative research design in nature and used

phenomenology research. The phenomenological research aims to understand,

describe and interpret the meaning of experience of human life. This study used a

phenomenological method since no statistical treatment is involved in interpreting

the data. And also, it describes the view of teachers and students about homework

in Canduman National High School.

Research Environment

Figure 2 presents the location map of the study which is conducted at


Canduman National High School.

Figure 2 shows the Map of Canduman National High School.

The research was conducted at Canduman National High School, located at

Canduman, Mandaue City, Cebu, Philippines. The school was established in the year

1981, by the help of the three neighborhood barangays; namely, Canduman,

Cubacub and Casili.

Research Participants

The participants of this research study were selected students from Senior

High School grade 11 to 12 and selected senior high school teachers of Canduman

National High school. There were 2 students per section in the senior high school

department and 10 senior high school teachers were selected by the researchers.

The students and teachers have undergone interviews or were asked questions

conducted by the researchers.

Research Instruments

The research used an interview guide and audio recording to collect

information from the participants. On the interview guide, the first part was about

the advantages, disadvantages and effects of homework towards students and

teachers. The second part was about the usual concerns and experiences of students

and teachers in homework. While, the use of audio recording is to record the

important information gathered from the respondents accurately for the use of the

study. The collected data were analyzed to formulate the best conclusion and

recommendations for the study.

Research and Data Gathering Procedure

The researches created a transmittal letter to the principal of Canduman

National High school. A letter was sent to both students and teachers of senior high

school from grades 11 to 12 to ask for their permission if they are available for the

interview. The researchers selected 2 participants from each section and 10

teachers of senior high school department to participate in the study. After that, the

guide questions were prepared and the interview was conducted anywhere

convenient for the participants. The questions that were prepared by the

researchers were mainly based on the topic of "Teachers Assigning Homework: A

Boon or a Bane?”. During the interview participants were asked questions in either,

English, Vernacular or Tagalog in their choice for them to comfortably answer the

questions or interviews. All the data that was gathered from the participants was

written and analyzed carefully by the researchers.

PRESENTATION, ANALYSES, AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

This chapter presents the in-depth interviews conducted with the

participants. A broad description and presentation of significant themes are

presented entirely to depict the views of teachers and students towards homework.

Profile of the Participants

Table 1 presents the participant’s profile that is greatly involved in doing

homework.

The profile of the students and teachers exposed to homework are displayed

on table 1. The participant ranges from grade 11 students to grade 12 students from

different tracks and teachers who teach different subjects. The majority of the

students are from the ABM and HUMSS track and teachers who’re handling two

subjects of the Senior High School Department.

The result might imply that majority of the participants who experience and

are greatly involved with a lot of homework are Female students and teachers.

gathered data and responses of students and teachers are varying from each other.

There were students and teachers who stated that doing homework can greatly help

in terms of increasing grades, enriching the mind, lessening stress and it improves

the attitude and skills. On the other hand, they also said that homework became a

burden on students since it increases the work to be done leading to exhaustion,

stress and it’s time consuming which decreases the available time for other things

like family bonding and doing household chores.

disadvantageous for both students and teachers.

The findings support Pragmatism by John Dewey which explains that inquiry

should not be understood as consisting of a mind passively observing the world and

drawing from these ideas but as a process that is done to check if something is right

through actions and Discovery Learning Theory by Jerome Bruner which states that

active engagement will develop problem solving skills and responsibility, for it is

found that when students do their homework, they learn new things while

searching for information, answering assignments, etc. which can be used in

discussions and they develop a sense of responsibility while doing it.

Different effects of homework towards students and teachers are exhibited

in table 3 that results in both positive and negative effects of homework. In the

positive side, it shows that homework gives students some confidence to

participate. The other result shows that homework can help in reviewing previous

topics and to have advance learning for the lessons that is going to discuss. It also

shows that homework can give extra knowledge and higher grades that made

students outstanding in terms of academic performances. Homework can also help

in mastering the concept and provide consistency in doing homework and constant

learning. Aside from the good effects that the homework gave to students, it also has

bad effects that can affect the students’ health. One of this is the stress that it gives

to students and the time it consumes that prevents the students to relax and do

other things at home. Aside from this, the fact that because of exhaustion that

student experienced, homework is done at school instead of being done at home

which makes the teachers mad.

effects that affect the students’ health, behavior, and their way of learning which

made a big impact to the students’ studies and performance at school.

Table 4 showed the different concerns and feelings of student and teachers

towards homework. Some participants stated that doing homework affects and

steals time from family bonding and other household chores while some stated that

a student should be responsible and cooperative in doing homework but most of the

responses stated that being stressed out, tired and encountering struggles are

common on doing and assigning homework. It is also stated that homework

increases the chances of cheating happening among students and that they want to

stop attending school because of it.

This might indicate that most of their concerns are negative like being tired,

stressed and it steals time for other things that’s why they have a hard time

completing their homework.

The responses assent with the study of Huisman which states that homework

is challenging for students to complete while they have their busy life. It is for the

reason that students have a lot of things to do at home causing them to be easily

tired that’s why they struggle in completing their homework.

The experiences of teachers and students towards homework are

presented on table 5. Students struggle when they’re doing their homework since

they encounter low internet connection and low internet connection. They also get

drained while doing it and some of them becoming sick. But for others homework

can be a stress reliever and it helps in enriching their minds. On the side of the

teachers, homework raises the chance of cheating among students and some are

very cooperative and do it while others don’t. Teachers also feel contented but

students complain about homework.

This indicates that homework makes students struggle and drained. On the

side of the teachers, homework promotes cheating and there are many complaints

heard when students are given homework. Therefore, homework is an advantage

but at the same time a disadvantage to both students and teachers.

The findings supported the study of Carr and Rocker which insinuates that

homework only helps most of the time but there is some homework that brings

more work, for it is discovered that the students see homework as an additional task

to be done at home so they have a hard time in completing it.

Chapter 4

SUMMARY, FINDINGS, CONCLUSION, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the summary, findings, conclusion, and

recommendations of the study.

Summary

This research is a qualitative research design in nature and used

phenomenology research.The phenomenological research aims to understand,

describe and interpret the meaning of experience of human life.This study used a

phenomenological method since no statistical treatment is involved in interpreting

the data. And also, it describes the view of teachers and students about homework

in Canduman National High School.

Specifically, this aims to:

1. determine the profile of the participants in terms of:

1.1 sex;

1.2 grade level (for students) and

1.3 subject handled (for teachers).

2 determine the advantages & disadvantages of homework;

3 know the effects of homework towards students and teachers;

4 identify the concerns encountered by students as well as the teachers regarding

homework; and

5 know the experiences of teachers and students regarding homework.

Findings of the Study

Based from the analyses and interpretation of the data, the following findings

are drawn:

1. Out of 32 participants 19 are female and 13 are male. 10 students come from

grade 12 with the strand of HUMMS, ABM and GAS while there are 12 students

from the grade 11 of Canduman National High School. On the side of the

teachers, they had different subjects handled from 1 st semester to 2nd semester

and they taught different strands from different grade levels.

2. The advantages of homework are that it can greatly help in increasing grades,

enriching the mind with new learnings, lessening stress and it improves the

attitude like learning to be responsible and independent as well as the skills of

students. On the other hand, the disadvantages of doing homework are that it

became burden on students since it increases the work to be done. It also

exhausts and stresses out the students. Homework is time consuming which

decreases the available time for other things like family bonding and doing

household chores and lastly it promotes cheating.

3. The effects of homework toward the students is it makes the grades higher and it

gives confidence to answer the questions asked by the teachers at the same time

it can give new ideas to be familiar with the given topic. It also improved the

mind of the students through new learnings. Aside from the good effects that the

homework gave to students, it also has bad effects like the stress that it gives to

students and the time it consumes that prevents the students to relax and do

other things at home.

4. The concerns of the students and teachers towards homework is it will steal

time from family bonding and other household chores and also, students will be

stressed out, tired and would encounter struggles while doing it. Furthermore,

homework increases the chance of cheating among students and some want to

stop attending school because of it.

homework since they encounter low internet connection and financial problem

and they also get drained while doing it and some of them become sick despite of

that, homework can be a stress reliever and it helps enriching their minds. On

the side of the teachers, homework raises the chance of cheating also they feel

contented when their students do homework.

Conclusion

Homework has been a useful tool in education it helps students to review

past discussion and build study skills but in some ways it causes burnout and

discouragement to students to go to school (Tirada,2018). Moreover, in some

instances homework can help strengthening the relationship of students and the

parents by helping in completing homework this makes the parents to be involved

and be a part of their family bonding (Alkinson, 2018). While, in the study of

Huisman, it stated that homework is a challenging task to complete on their own

while they have their busy life. The main aim of this study is to find out whether

homework is disadvantageous or advantageous for students who do it. And identify

the concerns and experiences of students and teachers towards homework.

Based on the findings of the study, most of the participants are female (19)

and the rest are male (13). The advantage of doing homework is that it helps in

increasing grades, enriching the mind with new learnings, lessening stress and

improving the attitude and skills of students. While the disadvantages are that it

became a burden to students and it promotes cheating. It also burns out and

stresses the students as it is time consuming. The effects of homework are that it

makes students more confident with their answers when asked by teachers at the

same time it gives new ideas to be more familiar with the given topicThe concerns of

the student and teacher towards homework is that it steals time from family

bonding and other household chores it also stressed out, tire and struggles the

students. The experiences of students are that they struggle when doing homework

due to low internet connection and financial problem that causes students to lose

hope and want to stop schooling despite of that homework can be a stressed

reliever and helps enriching the mind while in the thoughts of the teachers’

homework raises the chance of cheating and feel contented when their students do

their homework.

The theories presented are Operant Conditioning by Burrhus Frederick

Skinner, Discovery Learning by Jerome Bruner and Pragmatism by Dewey. The

Operant Conditioning by Burrhus Frederick Skinner states that a particular person

behaves with its corresponding reward or punishment, for it is found that students

do their homework because it is given points by teachers and it increases their

grades. Some teachers also get frustrated if their students don’t make their

homework so they get mad at them. While Discovery Learning Theory by Jerome

Bruner states that people through their past experience and existing knowledge

discover facts and enables them to resolve problems and Pragmatism by John

Dewey explains that various activities and homework are good for learners rather

than using a traditional teacher focus method, for the reason that the students

gained more knowledge as they did their homework and it let them answer

developing their minds and attitude as a whole.

Recommendations

Based on the results and conclusions, the following were recommended:

1. that teachers should limit or minimize the homework that will be given

for the students to avoid stress;

2. that weekends should be for home activities and family bonding and not

for school works;

3. that teachers should give longer deadlines so that students will have a

chance to do other works;

4. that students should manage their time properly and set a priority for

their works to lessen the stress and prevent exhaustion; and

5. that students should be responsible in passing their homework in time to

avoid being deducted by the teachers.

The advantages of having homework to students is it can serve as an extension


of the activities of class for example in mathematics more time to practice their
skills. Generally for subjectsthat requires development of skills it is very
important because it cannot be achieved through activities only in the classroom
there should be additional practice so that they can master the skills they need
learn. Disadvantages, first and foremost it will eat up time so the students
already having most of their time in school and then if there will be more then it
would increase so there will have lesser time to converse with their family, do
their household chores and other home related tasks.

classmates so my concern is it defeats the purpose of the homework which
usually I intend it for their mastery of skills even its purpose and in turn it will
not have affect their academic performance. Since I don't give home works all
the time, I feel upset if ever my students will not do their homework it's because
I only give homeworks if when I found it's necessary.

Well, my usual experience is that majority of my students do their homework


because I don't give it often and every time I give homework I stress in its
importance and I also notice that most of the students would cheat more in doing
homework compared when they do school activities.

I'm not used in giving homework to my students if you asked my students about
giving an assignment to students I'm not so into that because I want them to
experience the life of a son and daughter in their homes and sometimes I gave
assignment if it is necessary. Number one advantage here is they are able to
understand the concepts before I will discuss. Second is also they will be able to
get the sense of responsibility because answering your assignment is a sign of
being a responsible student. The disadvantages of giving homework is that
assignment is too much for them right? Because our student is also a son and a
daughter and then home should be home and not a school anymore. If you give
too much assignment, they cannot focus any more to other subjects and also they
cannot do their task at home.

My concern is that they copy the answers from their classmates. I don't get mad
if the reason of the student is valid for example naay nahitabo sa balay na bati
pero king nag tog tog lang or makalimot ka mag yawyaw ko oi!.
