C. ABSTRATION
Before we tackle about Operational and Technical Definitions class, let
us tackle what Definition is.
Students answer: “a statement of the
What is Definition, class?
meaning of a word or word group or a sign
or symbol
Very good! The term “definition: is a word or expression that has a
precise meaning in some uses or is peculiar to a science, art, profession,
or subject.
3
In its simplest form, a definition is “a statement of the meaning of a
word or word group or a sign or symbol”. In other words, a definition
explains through clarification and further explanation what we are
trying to say with one or a few short words.
Defining terms is one way of helping to resolve problems of
ambiguity and there are many types of definitions
Now when it comes to Definitions class, there are two types of such,
those being Technical and Operational Definitions.
Students answer: Yes or No
Are any of you familiar with those two?
Familiar or not, we’ll still have a thorough discussion as to what those
two are starting with..
Technical Definition.. what do you think a Technical Definition of Students answer: The meaning of the word is
something is class? associated with the field or area of study
Very good!
TECHNICAL Definition
- refers to the definition of a word as used in a particular field like
Science, Law, or Engineering.
- The meaning of the word is associated with the field or area of study.
- It mostly refers to the aspect of explaining or describing any
terminology.
- great examples of such are the definition of terms/words that are found
in the dictionary.
For example:
OPERATION – it is a procedure followed in an instruction.
SURF - it is a sport, where a person stands on a board and rides with the
waves.
Statistics - the quantity that is computed from a sample
Evidence - is an outward sign of proofs to ascertain the truth of a
matter.
Students answer: *Answer can vary
Aside from the given samples class can any of you give me some more
technical definitions?
Very Good class!
4
Now that we are done with Technical Definition let us now also start
with Operational Definition
Students answer: it is the process of defining
Similar to before class, what do you think a Operational Definition of
a word/term of how it is used in a sentence,
something is?
or using context clues
Very good!
OPERATIONAL Definition
- it is a result of the process of operationalization and it is used to define
something (term/object) in terms of process.
- it is the process of defining a word/term of how it is used in a
sentence, or using context clues.
- it is the application of the word/term. These may include the various
attempts to define or explain a certain process and its properties
including but not limited to the characterization of the event itself.
In other words operational definition is more on the application of the
word or the terms of a process.
A great example of operational definition of the term is the weight of an
object. Operationalized to a degree, would be the following:
“Weight is the number that appears when that object is placed on a
weighing scale.”
Examples of such are:
COMPUTER – (Technical) it is a device or machine used in
performing, assessing, evaluation and following commands set by the
users.
- (Operational) it is something used in doing homework or browsing
the internet.
OPERATION – (Technical) in a military field, it means a mission with
specific goals and objectives.
- (Operational) it is the procedure given to be followed.
Understand class? Students answer: Yes sir!
A way to differentiate between operational definition and technical
definition.is just to think that technical definition is a definition in the
technical sense, while an operational definition includes information
from the real world.
If we were to apply such to a car
5
A technical definition of such might be an automobile or a machine
with four wheels and includes details of the automobile that make it
function.
While Operational definition would be an automobile is a car or truck
that gets you around from place to place and caries cargo or passengers,
and makes it easier to live in the city or provinces.
So with that said class, why do you we should study about Technical Students answer: *Answer can vary
and Operational Definitions?
For most people, these can be a reason for miscommunication or
misunderstanding. When people do not share meaning, they may arrive
at decisions that are not well-informed.
Also, when we need to explain how something works, technical
definition will help because it offers us the details. When we need just
an idea, operational definition is more helpful.
So with that ends our discussion Technical and Operational Definitions
To test your understanding in regards to Technical and Operational
Definitions how about we do a short test class. I’ll be showing you all
some words and I want you all to give me its Technical and Operational
Definitions,
Students answer: Yes sir!
Understood class?

following…
1. Television or TV
2. Shoes
3. Shovel
4. Cellphone
5. Hat
Very good class! So with that I hope all of you now understand
Technical and Operational Definitions
Students answer: The meaning of the word is
What was Technical Definition again class? associated with the field or area of study
And what about Operational Definition? Students answer: it is the process of defining
a word/term of how it is used in a sentence,
or using context clues
