A citizen is a member of a state , nation or


country.
Dual citizenship
This is when an individual resides in one
country and has citizenship for that country
and another at the same time. It is
important to note ,that this individual can
move freely between these two countries
and receive the benefits of being a citizen
for each of these two countries.
Citizenship:
This is membership in a state, nation
or country with guaranteed rights,
privileges as well as duties and
responsibilities.
Alien
This is a person who resides in one country
but is a citizen of another.
Ways in which a person could become a
citizen of Jamaica.

1.Birth:
(a).Any person born in Jamaica prior to
August 6, 1962, who was on that date a
citizen of the United Kingdom and its
colonies.
(b) Any person born in Jamaica after
August 5, 1962 .
2.Adoption
A non-Jamaican child who has been legally
adopted in Jamaica in accordance with the
Children (Adoption) Act; can claim Jamaican
citizenship through either the adoptive
mother or adoptive father and who must be
Jamaican citizens at the time adoption
occurred.
3.Marriage
A person above the age of 21
years old who marries a Jamaican
citizen is entitled to Jamaican
citizenship.
4.Naturalization:
This is the legal process by which an alien
becomes a citizen .the applicant should
have attained the age of eighteen (18) years
and live in Jamaica for a minimum of five
years. This person should be of good
character and be financial solvent.
5.Descent
Anyone born outside of Jamaica to
parents (mother or father or both) as
well as grandparents who are citizens
of Jamaica at the time of birth.

Benefits of being a Jamaican Citizen
Being able to vote in the local and General Elections.
Acquire a Jamaican Passport.
Work in Jamaica without a work permit.
Receive social benefits and get access to government
programmes.
Exemption from international fees at Jamaica’s
Premiere Universities.
Duty free allowance from customs and at the airport.

Jamaica(RGD) and the Passport Immigration
and Citizenship Agency (PICA) play in the
life Jamaicans through discussion.
Digital Citizenship: This is
someone who develops the skills
and knowledge to effectively use
the internet and other digital
technology, especially in order to
participate responsibly in social
and civic activities.
Global Citizenship: This is someone who
identifies with being part of an emerging
world community and whose actions
contribute to building this community’s
values and practices.
Active Citizenship : This is someone
who gets involved in their local
communities and democracy at all
levels, from towns to cities to
nationwide activity.
Deportation: This is the removal of a
person from a country due to acts of
crime or any other illegal activity.
Usually this person is not a citizen of
such country.
