Takahashi Style
INTRODUCTION
Learning how to create impact is key important to catch your public to get to listen
to you and keep focused along your presentation. It means a more meaningful
and attractive speech. However, this is not always the case for most presenters.

Traditional ways include to present too much text with no relevant information
which tend to bore the audience and they may lose interest. In order to avoid that,
we decided to make use of Takahashi Method, implemented, thankfully,
Masayoshi Takahashi has developed a method to bring the oomph back to text.
The Takahashi Method hacks away at the normal presentation style until only
single words or short phrases are left. He, then, blows them up to giant
proportions and creates stunning presentations that are genius in their
minimalism but infinite in their possibilities. Therefore, this project will develop
the concept of this successful presenter to convey powerful presentations
through his techniques and recommendations helped by the Pechakucha
storytelling format that will help us as future Executive Communicators to
enhance our communication skills for a simple and concise delivery, well-
structured that is easy to follow.

METHODOLOGY
Work as a team to reconstruct an investigation on the Takahashi method on
online websites and alternative sources such as reports or news from the
presenter. We plan the development of concise and relevant points to implement
techniques and then present according to the presentation style guidelines.

Definition
Presentation style is how you give your presentation orally. When delivering
public speeches or public presentations there are many different styles or ways
in which you can give your presentation. A Takahashi presentation is one of the
rising trends in the word of alternative presentation styles. The Takahashi method
forces you to rethink PowerPoint design, rely more upon speech than slides, and
practice your skills of concision and brevity.
A Takahashi presentation is all about text. It is a technique that uses simple and
refined visuals, particularly large block fonts. Named after its creator, Masayoshi
Takahashi, the style originated in Japan. A true Takashi presentation doesn’t
include any charts, photos or pictures. It only includes words, and only a few on
each slide, printed and in large characters. This is an example of one of the
alternative presentation styles that use many slides but displays each one for a
short period of time.

A Takahashi presentation is similar to the Lessig method, which focuses on

concision both in time and visuals. Lawrence Lessig, a Harvard professor, wanted
speakers to synchronize with the text on their slides. This style also emphasizes
the power of straightforward text in a presentation.

What is the origin of Takahashi stile?

When Mr. Takahashi had to give a short presentation and had no access to
PowerPoint or image editing software, he developed a new method out of
necessity. By using only giant text, he exploited the natural picturesque quality of
the Japanese language and left lasting impressions on his viewers. He was stuck
with text. Still, he wanted to be different. He wanted to be effective. So, he started
thinking very hard about how to use the best word for each slide as he took the
audience through his presentation. The words or phrases resemble Japanese
newspaper headlines rather than sentences which must be read. His slides,
though they are all text, are visual, visual in the sense that (if you read Japanese)
they are instantly understood and support his talk. As he says, if you have bullets
or sentences, the audience will read those and may miss what you are saying.

Use

Takahashi says that the method is really designed for people who are not good
at presentations and who are quite nervous about the idea of presenting. This
method, then, is easy to do, helps the presenter get organized during planning
and keeps the presenter on track while presenting. The method provides clear
visual support for the audience and helps make the content more memorable.
Why is it popular?

Takahashi presentations became popular in Japan as they help the audience

read and understand content rapidly. Other countries speaking eastern
languages found it similarly helpful. The non-Latin alphabet often holds more
visual meaning, and this presentation style focuses on the optical effect of words.

How can I make a Takahashi presentation?

Content and Design

The first and most important step of creating a Takahashi presentation is to

organize your content. The actual PowerPoint design won’t take much time. But
taking an entire presentation and summarizing it in a few conclusive words –
that’s the hard part. It’s best to do a bit at a time. First, try summarizing your
content onto cue cards. This is a practice most presenters are familiar with
already. Good speakers don’t often learn their speech word for word as the
delivery can sound robotic.

Once you’ve done that, narrow it down a little more. What is a single sentence
that summarizes each slide? What is the core message you want to portray?
Which words are best to explain it? Articulate and then reword to make it a perfect
articulation of your point. Then narrow it down a little more. And, if possible, a
little more. Once you have a presentation of slides containing only a few words,
you’re ready to start designing.

RECOMMENDATIONS
• The Takahashi style is usually effective if you use the right flaws or
words that could impact the audience.
• Keep the focus of your audience on what you are really talking about.
• No graphics or images should be used.
CONCLUSION
Several styles of presentations, the Takahashi style offers a minimalist alternative
and that allows to be very successful when used in the right way, this style
requires some precision when selecting the right words or phrases that engage
with the audience and allow their understanding along with what the exhibitor
shares. It is very effective in capturing the interest of the audience.

SETBACKS
It could be mentioned that there was little information about the method, since it
is relatively a base model for informal use and not with great scientific bases.
Also, exemplifying a presentation using said presentation technique was a bit
intimidating because text and design had to be carefully selected to maintain its
established format.

RESULTS

Member Task Performed

internet websites and finished
preparing the report.
Milagros Escobar Designed the presentation in
Pechakucha format
Héctor Rodríguez He searched for information on the
internet and prepared parts of the
report and its outline.

SUGGESTIONS/COMMENTS
The project guaranteed an active participation as a group. We were able to learn
and put into practice a style with which we can support or adjust in a business
situation. We devoted attention to developing the Takahashi method, which we
found super interesting. We totally identify with this style due to its great simplicity,
clarity and how direct it is. It made us think that less matters more when it comes
to complex presentations. As well as future presenters, we will use ways to be
concise with our ideas, maintaining control of the structure and time, in addition
to helping our audience to capture the main points. This means a degree of
freedom and effectiveness as an expositor.

ON TIME
The project will be turned in on the established date (November 25th) and with
the required guidelines for its delivery (Project guidelines and pdf format)
