Examination Logistics
On each day that you have an exam, you will need to be in school by 8:20am. Line
up and call in will begin at 8:30am. If you arrive after 8:45am without a valid
excuse, you will automatically get a 0 in that exam. You will still sit the paper at a
different time for data purposes, but your official score will be 0. If you are running
late, you need to call school and communicate the reasoning, so we are aware
before your arrival. Should you arrive late, your examination will still finish at its
specified time.
If you have an exam at 11.05am, you must remain in school following the first exam.
Line up and call in will begin at 11.05am. Following this exam all pupils must leave
the school site, unless they have written permission to remain in school. If you do
not have a second exam at 11.05am, you should leave the school site after you have
been released from your first exam.
You will be asked to hand in your mobile phone and smart watches at the start of
the examination into a box which will stay at the front of the hall for the duration of
the exam. Once the exam is finished, these will be returned.
Your pencil case must be see-through with the necessary equipment needed for the
examination. No equipment will be handed out to pupils. Please ensure you take
note on the days when you need specialised equipment, such as a calculator or a
Maths geometry set.
All pupils will need to be in full school uniform for the examinations.
You will receive individual exam timetables. Some of you will sit these mock exams
at St Matthew’s Church – you will be told in advance if this includes you. This
means that you will be lining up and completing your examinations there.

Revision lists

On the following pages, you will find the complete list of what you will need to revise
for each subject that you take. Please only take note of those that you are taking for
GCSEs. Please ignore the lists that you do not study.

Everything on this list is what will be in your examination. Please consult and
communicate with your teacher for that subject if you need any more information.

Highlight the dates of your examinations and the subjects you take.

Which exams will I take?

Foundation (grades 1-5) Higher (grades 3-9) Weighting

Speaking 7-9 minutes 10-12 minutes 25%
Listening 35 minutes 45 minutes 25%
Reading 45 minutes 1 hour 25%
Writing 1 hour 1 hour 15 minutes 25%

What are the exam topics?

Reading and listening:

These papers will cover all units of the GCSE, including those you have not yet studied.
This is so you get a realistic idea of the paper. We will provide a vocabulary sheet to
support you with these topics.
Writing and speaking:
These will focus on the units you have covered in class:
1. Family 2. Technology 3. Free time 4. Festivals
and traditions 5. House and home town 6. Social issues (voluntary
work/health)

How do I revise?
Reading and listening:
•Revise vocabulary from your glossaries. Do this little and often rather than trying to
cram. We recommend making flashcards (physical ones or using an app), making mind
maps of words from specific topics, and testing yourself by rewriting or covering and
saying the words. Staring at the words and saying them in your head is not enough.
•Use your Exam Practice Workbook (available soon via ParentPay) for past paper-style
questions

Speaking
•You will prepare some model answers in class in the summer term. Ensure that you have
written good answers including all elements of VOTE.
•You will need to memorise your answers. We recommend rewriting them, having
someone quiz you, making prompt cards and gradually weaning yourself off them. Again,
just looking at the answers and saying them in your head will not be enough to remember
them to a good standard
•Do practice role play and photo questions when given these

Writing
•Ensure that you know as much of your GCSE Shortcuts Sheet as possible off by heart
•Be mindful to use VOTE and include some phrase from each different coloured box on
the GCSE shortcuts sheet
•Foundation candidates should ensure that they are clear on how to say “in the photo
there is/there are”, plus some broadly applicable vocabulary e.g. people, woman, man,
trees, buildings, food, etc.
•Higher candidates should ensure that they know some model conditional/subjunctive
sentence starters (e.g. If I were rich I would…) 15
•You can also use your model speaking answers for the writing exam
