Anatomy & Physiology - Laboratory
STUDENT ACTIVITY SHEET BS NURSING / FIRST YEAR
Session # 10
LESSON TITLE: TISSUES (Part 2) Materials:
Pen and notebook
LEARNING TARGETS:
Reference:
Upon completion of this lesson, you can:
1. Describe the parts and types of muscle tissue; and, VanPutte, C., Regan, J., & Russo, A. (2019).
2. Identify parts and types of nervous tissue. Seeley’s essentials of anatomy & physiology (10th
ed.). New York, NY: McGraw-Hill Education.
LESSON PREVIEW/REVIEW
Identify if the statement in each item below is true or false. If the answer is true, encircle the (/) sign and encircle (x) sign if
you think it is a wrong statement.
(/) (x) 1. Skeletal muscles do have shorter size than cardiac muscles.
(/) (x) 2. Nervous system can make skeletal muscles move involuntarily.
(/) (x) 3. When a muscle tissue contracts the muscle fibers shortens.
(/) (x) 4. There are 4 types of muscle tissues.
(/) (x) 5. When a muscle tissue contracts the muscle fibers shortens.
MAIN LESSON
You will study and read their book, if available, about this lesson.
MUSCLE TISSUES
Muscle - main function is to contract, shorten, making movement possible. Muscle contraction results from contractile
proteins located within the muscle cells. (to be discussed further on Muscular system)
Different types of Muscle Tissues: its structure, location and function
1. Skeletal
a. muscle attached to the skeleton and enables the body to move; striated.
b. Skeletal muscles are stated or bonded because of the arrangement of contractile proteins within the cells
2. Cardiac – pumps the blood under involuntary control and shorter than skeletal muscle cells
1. Smooth – responsible for a number of functions, such as a moving food through the digestive tract and emptying
urinary bladder.
When we say a muscle tissue
is striated it means it is
banded.

TYPE OF MUSCLE TISSUE FUNCTIONS LOCATION
Skeletal muscle cells or fibers appear striated Attached to bone or other
(banded); cells are large, long, and cylindrical, connective tissue
with many nuclei.
Movement of the body; under
voluntary control
Cardiac - cylindrical and striated; single nucleus; In the heart
branched and connected to one another by
intercalated disks, which contain gap junctions.
pumps the blood; under
involuntary control.
Smooth muscle - tapered at each end, not hollow organs such as the
striated, have single nucleus stomach and intestine; skin &
regulates the size of organs,
forces fluid through tubes,
controls the amount of light
entering the eye, and produces
goosebumps; under
involuntary control;
eyes
NERVOUS
● consists of neurons and support cells
● forms the brain, spinal cord, and nerves.
● responsible for coordinating and controlling many body activities. (to be discussed further on Nervous system)
● awareness of ourselves and external environment, emotions, reasoning skills, and memory or other functions
performed by the nervous tissue.
Action potential is the ability of the nervous tissue cells to communicate with one another and with cells of other tissues
the neuron, or nerve cell, is responsible for conducting action potentials. It is composed of three parts: a cell body,
dendrites, and an axon.
Parts
1. Cell body of Neuron - Contains the nucleus and is the site of general cell functions
2. Nucleus - responsible for conducting action potential
3. Glia - are the support cells of the nervous system;
4. they nourish, protect, and insulate the neurons.
5. Dendrite - dendrites and axon are nerve cell processes (extensions).
6. Axon - dendrites and axon are nerve cell processes (extensions).

CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING
You will answer and rationalize this by yourself. This will be recorded as your quiz. One (1) point will be given to the
correct answer and another one (1) point for the correct ratio. Superimpositions or erasures in your answer/ratio is not
allowed.
Instruction: Fill the necessary information.
MUSCLE TYPE LOCATION MUSCLE ACTIVITY STRIATED
Skeletal 1. 2. 3.
Cardiac 4. 5. 6.
Smooth 7. 8. 9.
Draw and label the structure of a neuron. Afterwards, state their respective functions.

RATIONALIZATION ACTIVITY
The instructor will now provide you the rationalization to these questions. You can now ask questions and debate among
yourselves. Write the correct answer and correct/additional ratio in the space provided. For the drawing part, you may use
the back portion of this sheet or your notebook for the answers. You may also write the correct answers in the image you
have drawn in the CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING part. Make sure to use another pen color (preferably red ink) for easy
distinction.
LESSON WRAP-UP
You will now mark (encircle) the session you have finished today in the tracker below. This is simply a visual to help you
track how much work you have accomplished and how much work there is left to do.
You are done with the session! Let’s track your progress.
AL Activity: CAT: MUDDIEST POINT
You will respond to only one question. This technique will help you determine which key points were missed.
In today’s session, what was least clear to you?
