Challenges in waste
collection in Lahore city
The Lahore city is capital of the Punjab province and 2 nd populous city of Pakistan.
Population is increasing day by day due to facilities available in this city. Many
families have moved from their home town to Lahore city.
As increasing trend in population, city is facing many challenges in providing basic
facilities to residents. Especially, waste management is a big challenge for Waste
Management department to comply with daily waste generation.
Following are some challenges which are hurdles against proper waste management
in Lahore.
1. Lack of awareness:
A big awareness program is needs to be addressed to aware citizens about
their responsibilities and duties in waste collection system. And how they can
play their role in waste collection system of management.
Awareness program can be played over TV shows, Through advertisements
and awareness sessions.
Communication department can play a big role to overcome this challenge.
2. Illiterate population:
2nd challenge in proper waste collection system is illiterate people especially
labor force. Approximately, all labor force in Lahore is outsider. They don’t
care about waste even they don’t know about this system. They mostly
though garbage over roads, open spaces and empty plots.
The need to be aware about Bin system.
3. Shortage of Labor force/ Workers:
Management have shortage of workers for collection of waste and cleanliness
of roads and other public places. So every worker has more work load, due
to which many workers get ill. This challenge creates difficulties in proper
waste management system and cleanliness of public places along with roads.
4. Improper Bin/trolley system:
There is no proper bin system or less containers available in various areas of
city as compared to waste generation rate. Sometimes these are far away
from home or inaccessible. So residents don’t bother to access them. They
usually through garbage in empty spaces or give it to street waste collector,
who segregates items from garbage having high calorific value. Which are an
important for energy production from waste.
5. Social responsibility:
Citizens doesn’t take up social responsibility to overcome this challenge.
Every other person thinks that this is only responsibility of relevant
departments to manage this system. But system couldn’t be effective without
their role. Every citizen should take social responsibility to through their
garbage as directed by management of city. These issues must be addressed
in educational curriculum to educate people about their social responsibilities.
6. Shortage of equipment and machinery:
Management have not enough machinery to collect waste in time. Due to
which waste load increases on collection points. Sometimes waste overload
than container’s capacity and spreads around container. Workers have
shortage of basic equipment for waste collection and cleanliness of public
places or roads.
7. Ineffective management:
Sometimes coordination barriers, lake of interest and favoritism of
management play part in mismanagement and collection of waste.
Above given key points are hurdles in practices of waste collection system.
