3.2 Organs and Systems

The document discusses several body systems including the digestive system, excretory system, circulatory system, and respiratory system. It provides details on the heart and blood vessel anatomy and flow. It also describes the function of lungs and gas exchange, as well as diseases related to smoking like damage to cilia and increased risk of cancer. Other gas exchange systems in fish are mentioned, and the document closes with a brief discussion of anatomical arrangements in the respiratory system.

Veins:
carry deoxygenated blood from cellular respiration back to the heart to be
pumped to the lungs to be oxygenated.
Arteries:
carry oxygenated blood from the heart to the rest of the body.

Capillaries:
connect the arteries and the veins. It is here that gas exchange/nutrient in
take occurs.

Function of the Coronary Arteries
The coronary arteries supply oxygenated and nutrient filled blood to the heart
muscle. There are two main coronary arteries: right coronary artery and left
coronary artery. Other arteries diverge from these two main arteries and extend to
the bottom portion of the heart.

Diseases Related to Smoking
1. Smoking damages the cilia, preventing them from sweeping
foreign particles out on cells of the respiratory system.

2. Cigarette smoke is filled with more than 4000 chemicals,
including over 40 that are known carcinogens. In addition,
cigarette smoke has over 1000 times the level of carbon
monoxide that is known to be harmful to human health.

3. Tar is responsible for many respiratory
problems. People who smoke a pack of
cigarettes a day absorb about 250 mL of
tar into their lungs each year.

Other Gas Exchange Systems

A fish draws water
through its mouth and
over its gills. As water
passes over the gills,
oxygen diffuses into
the adjacent blood
vessels. At the same
time, carbon dioxide
diffuses out.
