WHAT IS READING?
Reading is
·a skill which enables us to get a message;
·recognizing the written words (written symbols);
·getting (understanding) the meaning;
·used to teach pronunciation;
·grasping information from texts.
READING
Reading is a complex activity that
involves both perception and thought.
Reading consists of two related
processes: word recognition and
comprehension. Word recognition refers
to the process of perceiving how written
symbols correspond to one’s spoken
language.
ACTIVITY
READING
Comprehension is the process of making
sense of words, sentences and connected
text. Readers typically make use of
background knowledge, vocabulary,
grammatical knowledge, experience with
text and other strategies to help them
understand written text. There are the
following types of reading and the
corresponding types of activities to
develop the corresponding reading skills:

Scanning to give you an idea of the difference between
the two.
READING STYLES
There are several reading styles that you need to
understand so you can develop your reading skill. Having
knowledge of these styles will help you comprehend the
text/material. The style that you choose to employ highly
depends on the purpose of reading. The common reading
styles are scanning, skimming, extensive reading and
intensive reading.
1. SCANNING
Scanning is the reading style
you use when you look for
specific information. Usually,
these pieces of information
answer wh – questions. It is a
reading strategy in which you find
a specific information without
reading the entire text.
1. SCANNING
In scanning, you already know what kind
of information you are looking for, which
means you are just locating the said
information in the material. Examples of this
are when looking up a word in a dictionary
or finding your friend's name in the contacts
directory of your phone, checking the food
on the menu book, looking for a specific file
folder in a cabinet, and checking for the
price of a product in the products’ list.
Skimming is a reading strategy in
which you look for the main idea of a text
2. SKIMMING without necessarily reading the entire
material. You use skimming if you get only
the general overview of the reading text.
Hence, individuals using this reading style
look at the title of book, the cover, the
table of contents, the back pages, the
headings, the subheadings, and the like to
find details about the book or text, rapid
reading of a short story before your exam,
and looking at the cover and chapter titles
of magazine before buying it.
3. INTENSIVE
READING
Intensive reading is a type of reading in
which you read a text to understand it
fully. In this kind of reading, one must be
able to fully absorb what the text is
talking about by making meaning out of
every word and phrase that one does not
fully understand. Examples of this type of
reading are:
3. INTENSIVE
READING
Making a research paper, doing a
term paper, reading to fill gaps in a
summary and ordering jumbled
paragraphs in their proper form
with the intention of having to read
these paragraphs carefully to order
it properly.
4. EXTENSIVE READING
Extensive reading, on the other hand, is a
type of reading where you do a more general
reading of texts to enjoy and to have a
general idea of a topic. As such, extensive
reading usually involves choosing materials
that typically interest you.
4. EXTENSIVE READING
It is usually unguided by the teacher and
is done out of your own preference. For
example, you find the concept of nitrogen
cycle in your Science class interesting, and
you decided to read more about it on the
Web and from the books available in your
school’s library. You also do extensive
reading when your teacher asks you to write
a summary or to give a presentation about a
certain topic.
