Teens & Romance: Impact on Development

This chapter reviews related literature on teenage romantic relationships. Research shows that romantic relationships are a normal part of adolescent development, though they can impact academics both positively and negatively. Theories suggest social interactions and relationships influence cognitive development. While relationships may increase motivation and sense of belonging, they can also prove distracting. Most teen daters are not sexually active. Older teens, ages 15-17, are more likely to have relationship experience than younger teens.
