(CSTD) is a subsidiary body of the
Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). It
holds an annual intergovernmental forum
for discussion on timely and pertinent
issues affecting science, technology and
development.

and Cultural Organization is a specialized
agency of the United Nations (UN) aimed at
promoting world peace and security through
international cooperation in education, arts,

Famous Filipinos
in the Field of
Science
RAMON CABANOS BARBA
was a Filipino inventor and horticulturist best
known for inventing a way to induce more flowers
in mango trees using ethrel and potassium
nitrate. Barba was proclaimed a National
Scientist of the Philippines in June 2014.

JOSEFINO CACAS COMISO


was instrumental on a global project observing the planet for
rapidly declining perennial sea ice cover, and produced a
paper on the subject that has been cited over one thousand
times. Comiso's work has revealed the extraordinary rate at
which Arctic ice is affected by global warming, at
approximately three times the intensity of the global average.
JOSE BEJAR CRUZ JR.
was a Filipino who contributed to the analysis of electricity
and its control. He has written more than 100 articles on
Electrical Applications. He served as Vice President for
Technical Activities in 1982 and 1983, (Vice President for
Publication Activities) in 1984 and 1985 of the Institute of
Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) of the
United States

LOURDES JANSUY CRUZ


is a Filipino biochemist whose research has contributed to the
understanding of the biochemistry of toxic peptides from the
venom of fish-hunting Conus marine snails. Throughout the
Philippines, she is known as the Sea Snail Venom
Specialist.
FABIAN MILLAR DAYRIT
known for his phytochemical work for the
development of lagundi as part of the
National Integrated Research Program on
Medicinal Plants.

RAFAEL DINEROS GUERRERO III


is a Filipino inventor of vermicomposting and vermimeal. He
is also recognized as an expert of tilapias where he started the
innovation SRT-95 or Sex-Reversed Tilapia, 95% Male Fry
ENRIQUE MAPUA OSTREA JR.
is a Filipino doctor recognized for his research on
medicines and studies in the field of pediatrics. He
designed the Mectest kit that pioneered the use of
Meconium to "Drug Test" a person which is
considered one of the best and most accurate
methods of drug testing

LILIAN FORMALEJO PATENA


is a Filipino scientist who discovered a breed of calamansi and
seedless pomelo and discovered micropropagation which
established the banana industry in the Philippines. She is also
an inventor of leaf-bud cutting in cassava.
MARI-JO PANAGNIBAN RUIZ
was a Filipina mathematician and professor of
mathematics at Ateneo de Manila University. Ruiz
specialized in graph theory and operations
research.

GREGORY LIGOT TANGONAN


is a Filipino inventor of the analog antenna for sending
messages using Fiber Optics and Digitization for its
processing. His patent is called Stress bimorph mems switches
and methods of making same.
FE DEL MUNDO
Her work and accomplishments were focused on
addressing the lack of medical equipment in rural
communities during the aftermath of the war. She is
most reknown for inventing an incubator made
out of bamboo specifically designed for places
without electrical power.

DIOSDADO “DADO” BANATAO


His first major accomplishment was the design and invention
of the first single chip 16-bit microprocessor based
calculator. This would lead him later to develop the first
system logic chip set for IBM, the first Windows Graphics
accelerator chip for PCs.
Abelardo Aguilar
identified a strain of bacteria while studying soil
samples from his own lawn, which led to the
discovery of Erythromycin, a broad-spectrum
antibiotic that is now widely used.

Maria Orosa y Ylagan


She experimented with Filipino cuisine and invented
Soyalac, a nutrient-rich drink made from soybeans, and
Darak, rice biscuits containing vitamin B-1, which prevents
beriberi sickness, during WWII. She was the first to bring
banana ketchup to the general audience.
