Climate Change Impacts Overview

Climate change can alter precipitation patterns and increase evaporation, affecting water resources. Rising sea levels and increased storm intensity threaten coastal areas through flooding, erosion and damage from hurricanes. Species must migrate or face biodiversity loss as changing conditions allow invasive species to outcompete natives.

GROUP 3

1. On water resources:
a.) Altered Precipitation Patterns: Climate change can be the cause of changes in rainfall
patterns. It can cause some areas to experience increased amount of rainfall while
droughts for others. By this, it can affect the availability and distribution of water
resources. Also surface water bodies like rivers and lakes can be affected, causing
floods during excessive rain fall.
b.) Increased Evaporation: As the temperature of the earth rises the evaporation rates of
lakes, rivers and other bodies of water also rises which can affect and reduce water
that is available for humans and ecological needs.

2. On coastal resources:
a.) Sea Level Rise: The increase in sea level can be attributed to a variety of factors,
including the thermal expansion of oceans and the melting of glaciers and ice caps.
As this rise continues, it will have far-reaching impacts on the environment,
economy, and society. The environmental impact of sea level rise is severe. It will
lead to the loss of low-lying areas and island nations, endangering the habitats and
ecosystems of many species. The flooding of coastal areas will contaminate
freshwater sources and increase erosion rates. Additionally, extreme weather events
such as hurricanes and typhoons will become more frequent and devastating, leading
to further destruction of habitats and threatening human safety.
b.) Increased Storm Intensity: Climate change influences sea levels, causing them to rise.
When storms occur, these elevated sea levels create larger storm surges. A storm
surge is the abnormal rise in sea level generated by a storm, which can inundate
coastal areas, erode beaches, and cause extensive flooding. Higher storm surges,
combined with already rising sea levels, pose significant threats to coastal
communities and their infrastructure.

3. On Ecosystems:
a.) Animal Migration: It can affect the ecosystem since animal whose living in their
natural habitat will no longer provide or contribute to their ecosystem. Because they
are migrating into new places so that they can avoid death, and when the animals
migrated into new places, leaving their natural habitat, the ecosystem won’t function
properly because there are no species left in that place, there’s no one to contribute
and help the ecosystem.
b.) Invasive Species: Create advantageous conditions for invasive species to establish
and thrive. These invaders, often possessing competitive advantages such as rapid
climate change is increasingly enabling the expansion of invasive species. As
temperatures rise and precipitation patterns shift, these environmental changes growth
and adaptability, can outcompete native species for essential resources like food and
habitat. This competition disrupts the balance of ecosystems, potentially leading to
reduced biodiversity and the alteration of critical ecological processes.

4. On Health:
a.) Heat Stroke: Increased daytime temperatures reduced night time cooling and higher
air pollution levels associated with heat events can affect human health. Extreme heat
events can trigger a variety of heat stress conditions, such as heat stroke.
b.) Vector-Borne Diseases: Changes in temperature and precipitation patterns can alter
the distribution of disease carrying vectors like mosquitoes and ticks. This can lead to
the spread of diseases such as malaria, zika, and lyme diseases.

5. On Biodiversity:
a.) Biodiversity Loss: Climate change can disrupt ecosystems and habitats, leading to
shifts in the distribution and behaviour of species. This can result in the loss of
biodiversity, as some species may not be able to adapt or migrate to more suitable
areas.
b.) Ocean Acidification: Increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere leads to ocean
acidification, which can harm marine biodiversity, particularly coral reef because it
hinders the ability of corals to build their calcium carbonate skeletons. This can lead
to reduced coral growth and increased susceptibility to bleaching events, which can
devastate coral reef ecosystems.
