Naturalism and Ritualism

Naturalism and Ritualism are two theories used to study mythology. [1] Naturalism posits that myths developed to explain natural phenomena and that gods represent natural elements like the sun or moon. Proponents believe only nature is real. Ritualism claims that myths and rituals are intertwined and interacted in early forms to communicate and foster social cohesion. Ritualism interprets myths as expressions of cultural rituals and ceremonies. Both theories provide frameworks for analyzing mythology and understanding the beliefs and customs of ancient cultures.

Naturalism
Description of the
naturalism
According to this theory, all myths
are the result of an attempt to
explain natural Phenomena.
People who believe in this theory
believe that myths can be traced
back to the worship of the sun or
Moon.
Proponents of Naturalism
·The earliest Pre-Socratic philosophers, such as
Thales, Anaxagoras and especially Democritus,
were labeled "natural philosophers"
Epicureanism
Atomism
Aristotelianism
(like Baron d'Holbach in the 18th Century)
publicly renewed the case for Metaphysical
Naturalism, under the label of Materialism.
Proponents of Naturalism
·With scientific advances in quantum physics,
this developed into the more far-reaching
doctrine of Physicalism.
· Marxism in the 19th Century and
·Objectivism in the 20th Century,
·Have embraced Naturalism for their causes, as
have the more moderate political ideals of
Secular Humanism.
Features of Naturalism

The supernatural does not exist, only nature is

real.
Consists of only natural elements.
Framed realistically since it is stemmed from
realism.
Based on the theory of the survival of the fittest.
Use of Naturalism in the Study of
Mythology
In the study of mythology, naturalism is used to
explain how every existence and every single thing
arises from natural phenomenon with one or more
natural causes. Gods in myths are more like
humans and represented natural elements.
Moreover, characters are controlled by their
environment or fight for their survival.
Ritualism
Description of the
Ritualsim
Myth and ritual theory, often known as the myth-
ritualist theory, claims that rituals and myths work
together. The theory does not assert that Myths
and rituals naturally exist, but they must. The
theory, in its most direct form, claims that myths
and rituals are strongly intertwined. According to
Theory, myths and rituals interacted in their
original forms, but they could then decide to go
their own ways. In a milder variation of the theory,
mythology, and rituals might develop
independently but later coalesce.
Description of the
Ritualsim
According to sociology, ritualism is the practice
of continuing an action despite not holding
values or ideas that are consistent with the
objectives of the action. It has its origins in the
concept of ritualism, which is the ongoing
performance of a ritual. According to ritualism
sociology, even when a person disagrees with
the notion of traditional cultural objectives,
they nonetheless pursue those goals.
Proponent of
Ritualism
Ritualism is a concept developed by
American sociologist Robert K. Merton as a
part of his structural strain theory. It refers to
the common practice of going through the
motions of daily life even though one does
not accept the goals or values that align with
those practices.
Proponent of
Ritualism

so fogi!
Features of Ritualism
·The Role of Symbolism
·The Power of Rituals
·Rituals as a Form of Communication
·Rituals as a Form of Social Cohesion
·Rituals as a Form of Storytelling
Use of Ritualism in the Study of
Mythology
Ritualism theory is a framework used to analyze and
interpret mythology in terms of rituals or
ceremonies. Ritualism theory interprets
mythological stories as symbolic expressions of
religious or cultural rituals. It suggests that
mythological narratives are based on rituals used to
commemorate important events, explain natural
phenomena, or provide a foundation for moral and
social codes.
Use of Naturalism in the Study of
Mythology
Ritualism theory enables scholars to gain a deeper
understanding of how ancient cultures experienced
the world. Through a ritualistic analysis of
mythological stories, scholars can gain insight into
the beliefs, values, and customs of a particular
culture. The theory also allows scholars to draw
parallels between different mythologies and
examine how different cultures have addressed
similar issues.
