III. PRESENTING PROBLEM
Honey is a Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) student, her
family's current situation can affect her study. They are currently experiencing financial
problems. And as a student it is really something she is worried about.
IV. UNDERLYING PROBLEM
A seventeen year old Honey Bangot is having a mental breakdown every night,
because she is worried about some circumstances. Her family's current situation is not that
good- they are experiencing financial problems. As a family composed of seven members,
money is really a problem. With not enough money coming from their parents' salary and no one
is also trying to help them, not even a relative can lend them some money. Because they were
also having financial problems.
In spite of having a job, their parents' income is not enough to support five childrens. Her
mother works as a barangay volunteer and earns 2000 pesos a month. Her father works as a
construction worker and he is earning 1500 pesos per week. But sometimes there is no income
if there are no projects to work for. However, if there are no projects her father works as a
‘Barangay Tanod’ and earns 1500 per month. Sometimes her father also works as a tricycle
driver. So they can have money to buy food to eat for that day. They are earning not exactly a
minimum to support a seven member family, to buy their basic needs- like school stuff, new
clothes and sometimes they cannot lend them money for the fair to go to school. In addition,
they do not have any support from other people, even from their grandparents, aunts or other
relatives.Their parents are the only ones who are striving and working really hard to support
them.
V. BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Honey is the first born, she grew up seeing that she is in good hands. Sometimes she is
open to her parents and sometimes she is not. They were never close to their grandparents
on both sides and they just lived peacefully together with her family. She thinks that they are
living comfortably and her parents worry about nothing.
When she was elementary she did not know that they were actually struggling financially,
she thought that their parents fought over things that were shallow. So while growing up she
did not mind those quarrels and she just thought that her family was getting toxic. When she
stepped in high school, she wondered why they cannot buy certain things, why her other
classmates have complete school stuff and she only has those important things. She realized
that they were struggling financially. And that saddened her because she was a minor and
cannot help her parents.
Further, to lessen her parents burden- she helps her parents by doing house chores and
looking for her younger siblings while her parents are at work. She cooks, sweeps and does
laundry. It is a small way to be helpful to her parents, she said.
VI. CURRENT FAMILY FUNCTIONING
Presently, Honey is living in Marasbaras, Tacloban City, she is studying in ACLC College
of Tacloban. She is a STEM student and also an honor student. She is staying with her parents
and siblings. She has two siblings and two elementary students . They are all living together
with their parents. Her mother is working as a barangay volunteer and sometimes her mother is
not home, she is the one who looks for her siblings. When her father does not have projects, he
works as a barangay" tanod" at night and a tricycle driver in the morning.
At the present time, Honey and her other siblings became a member of the Pantawid
Pamilya Pilipino Program (4ps), it is a national government project that provides cash
assistance for those low income households. It also provides health and educational
assistance. That 4ps project really helps their family at the moment. It lessens the burden of their
parents and can help them to provide their basic needs. They do not also have to worry about
the money they are going to buy for their school stuff and new clothes. Also, that program
provides them with a sack of rice every month.
Moreover, Honey won't be a member of that program next year. Since she will go to
college. And that program only supports elementary and highschool students. So with that,
Honey hopes that she will get a scholarship from a university or another government assistance
for college students. Currently, sometimes Honey and her sister are having part time jobs. They
receive 100 pesos on the sidelines. Also, she is now applying to a state university that she
hopes she will pass.
In addition, some of her aunts and uncles from the side of her mother help them. One of
her uncles gave her a phone for school purposes and sometimes her aunts provide for her fair
or snacks for school. When she has classes she can also live with her siblings now at the house
of her aunts or uncle. Honey and her family’s life somehow improve, because of the help
provided by the government and a small help from her aunts and uncles.
VII. ASSESSMENT
For all the economic struggles of Honey’s family. It explains a theory from one
psychological theory that might be pertinent to understanding what financial struggles mean
for a family, it is called the Abraham Maslow's order of necessities. As indicated by Maslow,
people have an order of necessities going from essential physiological requirements to more
significant level mental necessities. Financial battles can straightforwardly influence the
capacity to address fundamental issues like food, safe house, and security, possibly ruining
the satisfaction of higher-request needs like social associations and confidence inside a
family setting. This could prompt expanded pressure, stressed connections, and generally
challenges in individual and familial prosperity. That is why when Honey was elementary her
parents' relationship was getting toxic. Because of stress and the higher request of needs.
Now, those struggles and battles that her family faces made them stronger and
more resilient. Even though they face many battles Honey never gives up, instead she
makes it a motivation to strive harder so she can provide for her family.
At this time, the financial need is the one that needs to be paid immediately so
she can have a college life free from financial struggles. Also, her parents won't struggle that
much anymore in providing for their 5 childrens. If Honey would get a university scholarship it
would be a big help for her and her family. She can concentrate on her studies and if she
succeeds and gets a job she will be able to provide for her family.
VIII. INTERVENTION PLAN
Goal: At the end of the school year (2023-2024) Honey will have a university scholarship for
her college, and a part time job so that she can provide for her family.
Specific Objectives:
● Have financial assistance from the state university.
● She will not ask for her parents' assistance in terms of money.
● Instead, she will be employed as a part timer and have money to provide for her
parents.
IX. RECOMMENDATION
X.
Currently, the assistance from the government that she received, cannot provide fully on
her school needs when she goes to college. Because of that the following are recommend:
a. Financial assistance for College students to tone down her struggles and so she can
focus on school.
b. Assistance from government or welfare agencies that can help her family.
c. A university scholarship that might help her in case the financial assistance from the
government is not enough.
