The Problem
Background of the Study
Athletic training and academic study are interrelated.Both are two sides of one coin.Sports
in education are an integral part of the curriculum.It helps to shape a person's personality and
contributes to their holistic development.In some ways,this subject is a demonstration of all the
disciplines that one has learned in school.Every sport has its foundation in math and
physics.There are many educational benefits to sports,and not just for physical (Muktadir,2022).
According to Department of Economic and Social Affairs (2020),since the COVID-19
pandemic has spread to almost all countries of the world.Social and physical distancing
measures,lockdowns of businesses,schools and overall social life,which have become
commonplace to curtail the spread of the disease,have also disrupted many regular aspects of
life,including sports and physical activity.This policy brief highlights the challenges COVID-19
has posed to both the sporting world and to physical activity and well-being,including for
marginalized or vulnerable groups.
In ICA sports are an important element of a student's growth and development.They aid
in the growth of psychological well being as well as bodily health.Since education is not only
about some subjects but also about the entire personality development,as also is sports,there
are other values to be learned from playing sports,making it an indispensable part of education.

In exchange for a student participation in a sport,many ICANIANS athletes hope to secure a
full ride college sports scholarship.Athletic scholarships reward the hard work and skill of
students and provide them further opportunity to shine.
In response to the need, this study aims to introduce students toward the benefits and
impact of sports participation in the academic performance of Immaculate Conception Academy
students.
Theoretical Framework
There are currently only two theoretical perspectives regarding the relationship
between participation in athletics and academic achievement:that participation diverts attention
from academic goals or has a positive effect on academic achievement.The first,Zero-Sum
Model Theory,is derived from the work of Coleman (1961),who concluded that adolescent
society emphasizes peer acceptance and an indifferent approach to academic achievement.The
second is the Development Theory,a reaction to Coleman which instead offered that
participation aids in the overall development of athletes,including academically.In this second
perspective that informs the hypothesis of this study that athletic participation leads to
increased academic achievement.

Statement of the Problem
This study will aim students to gain a deeper understanding of the relationship
between athletic participation and academic achievement.
Specifically, this study will seek to answer the following questions:
1. To what extent does athletic participation affect academic achievement among students
in Immaculate Conception Academy?
2. Is there a big outcome when you participate?
In terms of:
a. Study
b. Mental Health
c. Time
d. Social Influences
3. Is there a disadvantage when participating sports in academic performance?
In terms of:
a. Study
b. Mental Health

Based on the aforementioned questions, various hypotheses are formulated:
1. The idea that athletes develop an increased interest in school through participation in
sports leads to heightened sense of self worth that spills over into the classroom.

Definition of Terms
For a clear and wide understanding of the interpretation that is used in the study,the
terms that are related in the study are highly defined accordingly.
In this study, this refers to the conceptualizing that will be made by the researchers.
Excitement. This refers to a feeling of great enthusiasm and eagerness.
(Dictionary: oxford languages).
In this study, this refers to the ability of the students that are capable of doing sports
activities
Endurance. This refers to the fact or power of enduring an unpleasant or difficult
process or situation without giving way. (Dictionary: oxford languages).
In this study, this refers to the impact of sports to the ICANIAN students.
Sports Activities. This refers to the means of performing or participating in the sport in
any capacity which includes,but it is not limited to participation in
training,competitions,coaching or as an official (www.lawinsider.com).
In this study, this refers to the activities that allows students to join a specific sport
wherein they will determine their capabilities.
Athletic. This refers to the physical strong,fit, and active.(Dictionary:oxford languages)
In this study, this refers to the benefits of sports used by the ICA students.

Significance of the Study
The study will aim to know how ICANIANS determine their skills in playing sports
activity.
The result of the study will be beneficial to the following:
Students. This study will help students assess their strength in playing a sport.
Coaches. The knowledge of teaching students on how to perform better.
Researchers. The result of this study will define the knowledge and information that will
be added to the realization of the researchers.
Scope of Delimitations
This study will aim students to gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between
athletic participation and academic achievement.There are 60 students (10 per each level) of
Immaculate Conception Academy of Dancalan Inc. are used to be as sample for survey.This
study limits its coverage on grade level students only.Its main purpose is to identify the impact
of sports participation in academic performance and to find reasons and benefits in participating
such.This study considers every reason has an impact on their academic performances.This
study focuses on the school year 2022-2023 in Dancalan,Ilog,Negros Occidental.
