Resources
Learning Task 1. Carefully read the text below. Answer the question that follows.
Anna was chosen to represent your class in your school's Annual Extemporaneous
Speech Competition, which would be held online this year. For her preparation, she delivered a
speech to the class via video conference. You noticed that she was slouching most of the time
and was pulling her ear whenever she was at a loss for words. After her speech, your teacher
asked the class for comments or suggestions to improve your classmate's performance.
Use a language that everyone can understand and relate to. You must also speak
clearly and make a connection with your listeners. Vary your tone and pace so there
would be emotions coming from you. Organize your thoughts to make your point clear,
and you may also use visuals such as charts, maps, and others to show the information
you are talking about.
3
2. Giving Instructions
Use the imperative form of a sentence here so that the listeners know that they
are being given some instructions. Sequencing is also important because it will guide
them in every step that they are doing. Whenever possible, model the instructions and
check for understanding
Examples:
Can you tell me about the history of your place?
Will you promise to take care of your parents' legacy?
Could you show me how to go to your plantation?
Kindly elaborate on the economic issue.
b. Be clear. Use words that do not leave room for interpretation. Do not allow
your listener to be confused by the words you use. Phrase your instructions slowly
and arrange them logically.
Example:
To make coconut milk, get a coconut and crack it open with a bolo. Once
the coconut is cracked open, drain the juice onto a separate container, and shred
the meat from the shell using coconut grater. Put the grated coconut meat in a
mesh bag, then start squeezing the milk out of it into a bowl.
c. Use short and simple language. Be brief and direct to the point. Say exactly
what you mean without beating around the bush. The more precise your
instructions are, the easier it can be performed.
Example•
To get strips of young coconut milk, use a handheld coconut
scraper, and scoop the young coconut meat from the shell. Do not
scrape near the husk or fragments of the husk will stick to the
coconut meat.
d. Do not leave out information. State completely the instructions that have
to be done. Note that one or two details left out may make a big difference
to the outcome.
Example
To make a fresh coconut shake, put two cups of young coconut
juice into a blender. Add two tablespoons of condensed milk, one cup
of evaporated milk, and one cup of shredded young coconut meat.
Blend well until there are no more lumps. Add two cups of ice and
one cup of vanilla ice cream. Blend at high speed. Serve in a tall
glass. Enjoy the refreshing drink and take time to relax.
3. Making Explanation
Put in mind that you have to state the idea clearly and briefly using your
own words. elaborate on the ideas and provide concrete examples. You may
also present pictures. diagrams, etc. to help the listeners visualize more or your
ideas.
4
4. Narrating Events in Factual or Personal Recounts
Start by stating the events or details clearly. State it in a logical manner in
order to express clarity. If you are narrating a personal recount, you may deliver it
informally but for factual recounts. It can either be formal or informal depending
on your listeners.
How you stand in front of your audience speaks even before you open mouth
Make sure that you have a balanced stance with a little bit of leaning forward. This will
make your listener think that you are engaged with them.
Your behavior while speaking will show your confidence and will eventually affect your
credibility. In giving information, it's important that your audience will see you credible enough
to believe that the information you are giving is real and based on facts. When you are
unconfident in front of your audience, they may not be convinced by the messages you are
trying to convey.
Learning Task 2. Match each statement in Column A to its best description in Column B.
Learning Task 3. Study the given situation. Write a short letter to your friend based on the
situation given.
Your best friend is a K-pop fun. One of his/her favorite K- pop group will be having
their first ever concert in the Philippines two months from now. She/He is very excited
about it. Then in an unanticipated situation the COVID 19 pandemic comes, the concert is
postponed. She/He feels depressed. What will you do or say to cheer her/him up?

LESSON 3: Assessing Literature
Learning Task 1. Read the folk song below. Then, answer the questions that follow.
After Harvest
An Ifugao Folk Song
Literature from the Period of Emergence and Development shows a significant trend
as Filipino writers become more competent in the English language and gain mastery in
patriotic and resistance literature.
Recall the Ifugao folk song, “The Harvest” Details and images like laugh and shout,
dance and sing show the attitude of Filipinos, as they celebrate after a long day of hard
work. The setting of the poem also suggest that the event transpired in a rice field, which is
a common sight in Ifugao. In this selection, one can also imply that the characters’
livelihood depends on rice crop.
Each and every selection depicts a certain tradition, art, belief, or historical event
that has a great impact on the period when it was written. With every setting comes societal
influence and the things that are happening around the period. Even the Physical
environment can be vividly seen in the settings of the selections.
Also, when assessing literature, looking at the similarities and differences of the
themes of the literary selections is essential. In that way, you will be able to analyze how a
selection may be influenced by factors such as history, culture, and environment.

Learning Task 2. Read the excerpt of the essay PLIANT LIKE A BAMBOO TREE by I.V. Mallari.
After reading, answer the questions that follow. Write your answers in the space provided.
PLIANT LIKE A BAMBOO TREE
by I.V. Mallari
There is a story in Philippine folklore about a mango tree and a bamboo tree. Not being
able to agree as to which was the stronger of the two, they called upon the wind to make the
decision.
The wind blew its hardest. The mango tree stood fast. it would not yield. it knew it was
strong and sturdy. It would not sway. It was too proud. It was too sure of itself. But finally, its roots
gave way, and it stumbled down.
The bamboo tree was wiser. It knew it was not as robust as the mango tree. And so, every
time the wind blew, it bent its head gracefully. It made loud protestations, but it lets the wind have
its way. When finally, the wind got tired of blowing, the bamboo tree still stood in all its beauty and
grace.
The Filipino is like the bamboo tree. He knows that he is not strong enough to resist the
vigorous attack of superior forces. So, he yields and has survived.
This means that the Filipino would accept any kind of life that God would present to him.
For this reason, he is contented, happy and at peace. To him, as to that oriental poet,” the past is
already a dream, and tomorrow is only a vision; but today, well – lived, makes every yesterday a
dream of happiness and every tomorrow a vision of hope.”
The Filipino is very resilient, he has the ability to recover from any obstacle that comes his
way. Man – made or natural forces, he emerges triumphantly. He never gives up, no matter how
hard life was before and even now… the FILIPINO remains to be PLIANT like the Bamboo.
LEARNING TASK 3: Aside from bamboo, what other symbols can you use to describe Filipinos.
Draw an object in the box and write a short explanation of each.

MELC: Express one’s beliefs/convictions based on the material viewed

kalahok. Isulat ang iyong sagot sa mga patlang sa tsart.
Wednesday
2. Basahin at unawain ang aralin sa Expressing Beliefs Based on the
Material Viewed.
Learning Task 1. Watch any talent show online or on television. Imagine yourself as one of the
judges. Express your opinion about the contestant’s performance. Fill in the chart below .
In discussions, you may be called upon or otherwise motivated to contribute your own
opinions and express your belief. One thing to remember is the need to use certain signals to
indicate that you are about to share opinions, and not facts. The following are useful for signaling
an opinion or belief being shared.
In my opinion… I believe that …
For me … Personally …
My personal take on it is (that) … I’m convinced/not convinced …
To my understanding … It seems to me that …
From what I know … As far as I’m concerned …
In your daily life, you often see photographs or posters, or watch movies, documentaries,
opinion programs, and others. You come across ideas and these make you think of the things you
believe in. As you do so, you may feel the urge to express your conviction about a particular
concept based on the material. However, there are things to consider in expressing one’s beliefs
in these viewing materials.
Aside from the signal words mentioned earlier, the following expressions are also used in
expressing belief or conviction:
“I’m a (great/firm) believer in …” “I don’t believe in …”
“I’m passionate about …” “I think that is …”
“I’m commited to …”
Keep in mind that your reaction depends on how well you understand a message on a
material viewed and on how well you pay attention to details, process nonverbal cues, and
interpret meanings. You should also manage your emotions, because the more in control you are,
the more objective and rational your reactions will be.

February 21, 2022 specific statement na makikita sa talata.
Monday 2. Basahin at unawain ang aralin sa Citing Evidence to Support a General
Statement
Learning Task 1. Identify the general statement and specific statement in the paragraph below.
In decision making, the voice of the father and the mother strongly resonate with
influence. Unlike western culture, Asian children carry the duty and obligation of doing what
their parents deem as necessary or important. This in turn, fosters close relationships that
may then be passed to future children. This shows the extremely important role of parents
in creating a harmonious environment that imbibes family culture and tradition.
Go back to Learning Task 1. As you may have noticed, the paragraph contains a general
statement and details that support it. When reading a text, you may be able to see a pattern of
idea development and presentation from the writer. One strategy in paragraph development is the
use of general and specific statements.
Paragraphs and compositions are written in such a manner that specific ideas are used to
elaborate on the general statement. By definition, a general statement is one that is wider in
scope and may be further elaborated by details. On the other hand, specific statements are
narrower ideas that are used to explain broad concepts. These may be in the form of facts,
incidents, reasons, examples, or details. Specific statements are considered as text evidence.
General Statement: The Philippines is home to many endemic plants.
Specific Statement: Copeland’s Pitcher Plant is native to Mindanao and produces
beautiful and vibrant colored pitchers.
General Statement: There are a lot of uses for coconut tree.
Specific Statement: The fruit, when still young, may be used as refreshment.
10
Learning Task 2. Identify the general statement and specific statements in the paragraph. Write
1 line under the general statement and 2 lines under the specific statements
The color of a metal changes when its temperature changes. When metals become
very hot, it begins to glow. First, a metal will glow a dull red color. When the metals become
hotter, it changes to a bright red hot. At higher temperatures, it becomes yellow and finally
white. The wire inside a light bulb is a common example of a yellow hot metal. When the
wire inside becomes yellow-hot, the light bulb glows, or gives light.
Learning Task 3. Identify each statement as GENERAL or SPECIFIC. Write your answer in the
space provided.
_______________1. Unlike the bamboo which swayed with the wind, the mango tree
stood still, but finally, its roots gave way, and it stumbled down.
_______________2. Life is a series of unexpected twists and turns.
_______________3. There are lots of uses for the coconut tree.

Your reaction to what you are reading is called a text response. A text response is
basically sharing your reaction to a written text. It is an opportunity to let others know how you feel
about any text you have read. It can also be called a reader response.
Below are some points that can help you write your response.
o How do you feel about what you are reading?
o What do you agree or disagree with?
o Can you identify with the situation?
o What would be the best way to evaluate the story?
11
In writing a response , it is important to do the following:
1. Read the text for understanding.
2. Write the response in a three part structure (introduction, body, conclusion)
3. Use statements that express reactions ( I felt that … In my opinion …
The author seems to …)
Another important thing to remember about asserting a text is knowing facts and opinions.
Study the statements below:
Tondo is the largest district in Manila and the most densely populated.
Tondo is home to the toughest and most resilient Filipinos I know.
A fact is a statement that is true and can be verified or proven objectively. It is true and
correct no matter what. It has actually taken place or known to have existed, which can be
validated with pieces of evidence. Facts are strictly defined and can be measured, observed and
proven.
An opinion is a statement that holds an element of belief or a personal view about a
subject. It tells how someone feels or thinks about something. In other words an opinion is an
inconclusive statement, used in subjective matters, which cannot be proven true or false. Hence, it
is not true information but a biased one.
Based on these definitions, the first staement is a fact because it can be verified by
statistics. One can look at he land area and the number of residents in Tondo compared to other
districts of Manila. The sond statement is an opinion because the words toughest and most
resilient are hardly quantifiable.
It is important to recognize facts and opinions in both speech and writing so you will know
whether the speaker or author is trying to inform you with facts or trying to convince you with
opinions.
Learning Task 2. Tell if the statement is TRUE or FALSE. Write your answer in ths space
provided.
__________1. A text response is your reaction to what you are reading.
__________2. There is no need to read a full text in order to make rections to its content.
__________3. It is important to understand the difference between fact and opinion so as
to evauate information and make the right reactions or conclusions.
__________4. A fact is a statement that is true and can be verified or proven objectively.
__________5. An opinion is conclusive and unbiased.
12
Learning Task 3. Read the opinion in the speech bubble. Make a short reaction to it. Write your
answer in the space provided.

Learning Task 1. Read the text below. Formulate 2 questions out of the text.
When I was four, I lived with my mother, brothers and sisters in a small town in the
island of Luzon. Father’s farm had been destroyed in 1918 by one of our sudden Filipino
floods, so several years afterwards we all lived in the town though he preferred living in the
country. We had as a next door neighbor a very rich man, whose sons and daughters
seldom came out of the house. While we boys and girls played and sung in the sun, his
children stayed inside and kept the windows closed. His house was so tall that his children
could look in the window of our house and watched us played , or slept, or ate, when there
was any food in the house to eat.

Question 1: _______________________________________________________________
Question 2: _______________________________________________________________
With all the information available right at our fingertips and with seemingly unlimited
Internet resources today. sorting through a gamut of answers requires critical thinking skills to
keep confusion at bay. Therefore, framing the right questions will help you save time in
gathering data.
13
A good question can open minds and eventually can transform how people think.
Questions help learners focus on important details, stimulate discussion, and deepen thinking.
You Should already be familiar with Wh-questions—who, what, when, where, why,
and how. These question words are used to inquire about people, things, places, time,
qualities, and others.
Another thing to consider is the art of questioning, Effective questioning is not
always made to elicit “correct answer” but to discover what you as students are thinking
so as to advance your learning. An effective question can ignite one's creativity not only
the one asking but also the one answering. The list below will guide you to accomplish
all of these,
a. Frequency. It refers to the number of questions the person asks a period of time.
b. Equitable Distribution. It describes a questioning strategy in which all students in
the class are caned as equally as possible.
c. Prompting. This is a way of assisting someone toward the right answer,
d. Repetition. It is a strategy that delves into embedding the points into a person 's
mind.
e. Wait Time. It talks about the pause between a question of the pause after a
student has answered a question
How does one raise sensible questions? It begins with the attitude: "It’s okay not to
know everything." Combat the tear of not knowing something. Not knowing things is the
beginning of gathering knowledge, once this is conquered, practice asking questions.
Maybe not immediately as sensible as you'd hope. but through constant practice, you
would begin to master the art asking sensible questions.
Here are some pointers in crafting critical questions during a panel discussion:
1. Do some research about the topic. Read about the topic of the panel discussion. As
you read, take note of the questions you have in mind.
2. Formulate your question focus. This helps you frame essential questions that are
relevant to the topic and sort through many other minor ideas,
3. List down potential questions for the panelists. Prepare more questions than you
think you will need—and make sure they cover the topical landscape. The exact
phrasing of the questions can be ignored at this point to allow for free-thinking.
Below are some prompts that can be used.
4. Refine your questions, Review your list of questions. Improve them by checking if
they are phrased correctly and if they are free from any vague points or
grammatical errors. When finalizing your questions, put yourself your audience's
shoes. Make sure you ask the questions that are on everyone's mind,
5. Sequence your questions. Now that your questions have been refined, arrange
them in such a way it follows an order Panel discussion usually starts with broad
questions to set the tone of the discussion. This also relaxes the panelists Ask for
a definition, talk about the history of the topic. or why this topic is interesting or
important, Then, raise the stakes by probing into more controversial areas, where
hard-hitting thought-provoking questions may now be asked.

To help you practice writing and refining higher order thinking questions. you may
use Bloom's Verb Starters.

help the government last year implement a science-based rehabilitation
program for the polluted bay that would include replanting mangroves along
the coast. Instead, the government opted to spend millions on its controversial
dolomite beach, which it needs to top up regularly because of erosion
especially during typhoons.
