THE HERO’S FIRST TEACHER

• The first teacher of Rizal was his mother, Doña Teodora .

• Rizal at the age of 3 learned the alphabet and prayers.

• Doña Teodora discovered Jose’s talent for poetry and encourage him to write.
THE HERO’S FIRST TEACHER
• Rizal was a young boy with a “thirst for knowledge”. He was first taught at home by
his mother Dona Teodora as his “first teacher”.

• The story of the Moth, a story told by Dona Teodora to the young Jose made the
profoundest impression on him.
PRIVATE TUTORS OF RIZAL
• Maestro Celestino was Jose’s first private tutor.

• Maestro Lucas Padua was second private tutor.

• Maestro Leon Monroy became the hero’s tutor in Spanish and Latin. He was the classmate
of Don Francisco (died 5 months later)
JOSE GOES TO BINYAN

• On June 1869 at the age of 8, his parents decided to send him to Binyan to study.

• Jose went to Binyan with his brother Paciano.

• Carromata – the mode of transportation.

• He stayed at his Aunts House.


JOSE GOES TO BINYAN
• His Maestro was Justiniano Aquino Cruz who developed Rizals’ knowledge of the Spanish Language.

• Rizal described Maestro Justiniano as tall, thin, long- necked, sharp-nosed, with a body slightly bent forward.

• The school was in Maestro Justiniano’s house

• Juancho, was another Maestro of Rizal who taught him painting and the very reason why he also
excelled in drawing and also sketches.

• He also experienced his first school brawl at Binyan with Pedro, whereas he succeeded though he
was smaller than Pedro.
DAILY LIFE IN BINYAN/BIÑAN
• Hears mass at 4 a.m. or studies lesson before going to mass
• Goes to orchard to look for Mabolo to eat
• Breakfast
• Goes to class at 10 a.m.
• Lunch break
• Goes back to school at 2 p.m.
• Goes home at 5 p.m.
• Prays with cousins
• Studies lessons, then draws a little
• Has supper
• Prays again
• Plays in the street if moon is bright
• Sleeps
BEST STUDENT IN BINYAN
• Rizal became the best student in school. He surpassed his classmates in Spanish, Latin, and other
subjects.

• Before Christmas season in 1870, Rizal received a letter from his sister Saturnina, informing him of
the arrival of a steamer Talim which will bring him back home to Calamba.

• December 17, 1870 he left Binyan on a Saturday Afternoon.

• During the trip back to Calamba he was taken care by Arturo Camps, a Frenchman and a friend of
Don Francisco.
MARTYRDOM OF GOM-BUR-ZA
• January 20, 1872- Cavite mutiny
MARTYRDOM OF GOM-BUR-ZA

• February 17, 1872- Fathers Mariano Gomez, Jose Burgos, and Jacinto Zamora were implicated
and executed by “garrote” in Luneta.
MARTYRDOM OF GOM-BUR-ZA

• Leaders of Secular movement. They were responsible for the


“Filipinization of parishes” or simply called Secularization.

• They inspired Rizal to fight the evils of Spanish tyranny.

• Later in 1891, Rizal dedicated his second novel El Filibusterismo,


to GomBurZa.
INJUSTICE TO THE HERO’S MOTHER
• In 1872, Doña Teodora was arrested on malicious charge that she aided her brother Jose
Alberto in trying to poison his wife.

• Jose Alberto planned to divorce his wife because of her infidelity.

• Jose Alberto’s wife connived with the Spanish lieutenant of the Guardia Civil and filed a case
againts Rizal’s mother.

• Don Francisco de Marcaida & Don Manuel Mazano – most famous lawyers of Manila, defended
Doña Teodora in court.

• After 2 ½ years – the Royal Audiencia acquitted Doña Teodora
