MEASURES OF POSITION

Background Information

Measures of Position tell where a specific data value falls within the data set or its relative
position in comparison with other data values. The most common measures of position are quartiles,
deciles and percentiles.

Example 1. During the month of May 2020, Dr. D. Tamina recorded the number of COVID-19
recovery patients who came out to the hospital daily for 11 days. The results are 10, 8,
5, 9, 16, 13, 11, 4, 9, 3 and 10. Find the lower and upper quartile of the data.

Solution:
Arrange the given data in ascending order.
3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 9, 10, 10, 11, 13, 16

Least value Middle value Greatest value

• The lower quartile (Q1) is the value that is between the middle value and the least value in
the data set. Therefore, the lower quartile is 5.
• The upper quartile (Q3) the value that is between the middle value and the greatest value in
the data. Therefore, the upper quartile is 11.

Example 2. Find the average of the lower quartile and the upper quartile of the data.

Day Total Number of Infected Person in each Day

Monday 210
Tuesday 120
Wednesday 330
Thursday 89
Friday 270
Solution:
Arrange the given data in ascending order.
89, 120, 210, 270, 330

Least value Greatest value

Middle value

• The lower quartile (Q1) is the value that is between the middle value and the least value in
the data set. Therefore, the lower quartile is 120.

• The upper quartile (Q3) is the value that is between the middle value and the greatest value
in the data. Therefore, the upper quartile is 270.
