CHAPTER 1

The Problem And Its Background

This chapter presents a brief background of the study, the statement of the

problem, the hypothesis, the significance of the study, and scope and limitations.

Background of the Study

Due to the pandemic, the Department of Education was forced to conduct online

and modular classes as an alternative learning setup for students ever since. August 24,

2020 was the day that the Department of Education Secretary Leonor Magtolis Briones

stated that this A.Y. they will implement Module and Online Classes until there is a

vaccine for COVID-19. Thus, numerous issues and backlashes were created due to the

said implementation as for most people say that the Philippines isn’t ready for this new

style of setup.

The Internet has made online learning possible, and many researchers and
LA CONSOLACION COLLEGE MANILA

educators are interested in online learning to enhance and improve student learning

outcomes while combating the reduction in resources, particularly in higher education

(Farinella, Hobbs, & Weeks, 2000; Kim & Bonk, 2006; Pape, 2010). Yes, Internet did

made online learning possible, almost anyone in the world can access but not all can.

Various factors must be considered such as the quality of the internet, the students’

readiness to online learning, the invisible barrier between the teachers and student, and

etc. A great deal of evidence exists showing that no significant differences should be

expected regarding the effectiveness of well-designed online learning compared with

well-designed in-person learning (Clark, 1983; Russell, 1999). Despite this, significant

differences still exist in the way students perceive their online experiences during

learning. To the extent that these students’ perceptions are negative regarding their past,

present, or future online learning experiences, the students’ perceptions may contribute to

such outcomes as higher dropout rates (Carr, 2000), low motivation of students to learn

(Maltby & Whittle, 2000), and lower student satisfaction with the learning experience

(Kenny, 2003). Thus, this proves that Online learning is not as good as Traditional class.

Indeed, there are advantages and disadvantages of Online Learning as well as Traditional

Classes. But we need to discuss if there were significant difference on the students’

performance before and during online class.

According to the International Journal of Academic Multidisciplinary Research

(IJAMR) that the Effectiveness of an Online Learning for Flexible Learning by

Christopher DC, Francisco, and Maritis C. Barcelona (2020). That there study aims to

investigate the role of the web-based classroom in Eliadmey in designing an alternative

learning tool in times of emergencies. This study wants to know what can teachers do if

these (floods and typhoons) calamities and other emergencies happen to compromise in

learning. They conduct an interview with the selected graduated student of La

Consolacion University of the Philippines who had experienced three consecutive

trimester during the A.Y. 2018-2019. This study found out that Eliademy is accessible

and resulting from that the students agreed on the alternative tools for teaching and

learning. Also, this study will see what is the advantages and disadvantages of this

platform. It was concluded also that in times of calamities, teachers, and other institution

may use web-based classrooms that presented potential alternative learning tools. They

add also that they using platforms like the Leaning Management Systems (LMS).

In this study, you will see how students in the Philippines’ distance-learning

exacerbate inequalities. According to Ana P. Santos (2020) since March the Philippines

have shut their doors and classes have move in distance-learning when President Rodrigo

Duterte declared a nationwide lockdown. The transitions to distance-learning as impacted

not only the parents but especially the teachers and students. For K-12 students, using the

form of distance learning is “Modular Learning”, in which class modules are printed out

for students to study in their own houses and submit to teachers for grading. But the

problem is that modular learning is having a problem with producing because of not
LA CONSOLACION COLLEGE MANILA

having enough supply of bond papers and ink to print. Adding despite the effort of

printing modular learning, teachers are still expected to signals for their communications

to their students and other purposes. They required of needing a laptop and internet

connections, which is an outreach for many public school teachers. Also, many students,

too, still need the internet to do their home works for searching online. This study wants

to tell that this distance-learning may be good but not for all. That we need a sure planned

to provide the teachers’ and students’ needs for this distance-learning and to improved

our plans for the safeties of both this pandemic.

Statement of the Problem

The study is directed towards its main objectives which is to determine the

differences of Traditional and Online Class Setup to the Class Performance of Senior

High School in La Consolacion College Manila.

of the pandemic in their mental health and physical health. This will also give them

additional knowledge on how can they improve their performance in both Traditional and

Online Classes.

Teachers. It will help them to be aware of the challenges that senior high school

students are currently facing during the Pandemic. It will be influence their decision-

making in school events, mental health awareness, and grading systems. The results of

this study will serve as their evaluation if all of their efforts and activities were successful

for student’s learning during Online Classes. This can also give new perspectives and

new ideas in creating activities that may improve the mental health of the students that

are facing right now in this Online Class setup.

Parents. This study will give them knowledge about the differences of traditional

and online class setup to academic performance of the students. It will help them to be

enlighten on how to deal with their children who are physically and mentally affected by

the pandemic in order to understand and help them in their situations.

Schools. This study will help them on what can they improve and help both

students and teachers during online class. The results of this study will give them

clarification on what can they give attention in order for Online Classes to be as good as

Traditional Classes and be used as an alternative learning setup in situations like the

Review Of Related Works

For the researcher to have a stronger source to develop the study, this chapter will

present related literature about Assessing the Difference of Traditional and Online Class

set up to the Academic Performance of the Senior High School students. This section

contains information that will elaborate the Thematic Review, Synthesis, Theoretical

Framework, Conceptual Framework, and Definition of Terms.

The Different Barriers of Online Learning and its Effectiveness to the Student’s

Learning.

Gallagher and McCormick (1999) stated the term “distance education” has been
LA CONSOLACION COLLEGE MANILA
12
Mendiola, Manila
SHS – HUMANITIES AND SOCIALSCIENCES STRAND

used to describe the process of providing education where the instructor is distant

(geographically separated) from the student, or any instructional arrangement in which

the teacher and learner are geographically separated to an extent that requires

communication through media such as print or some other form of technology, according

to Moore and Thompson (1997). Distance Education has been purported to have at the

least a neutral effect on academic performance and at best have a positive effect on

academic performance. (Arbaugh, 2000; Clark 1999; Diaz, 2000; Dorbin 1999; Dutton,

Dutton, and Perry, 1999; Martin and Rainey, 1993; Navarro and Shoemaker 1999;

Neuhauser, 2002; Souder, 1993; Verduin and Clark, 1991; and Trinkly, 1999). When

factoring in student age it has been suggested that older students tend to perform better

academically in a Distance Education format (Dille and Mezack, 1991; Souder, 1994);

Yet, some of the research is on graduate, not undergraduate course work. Beyond those

two variables, the research on student demographics such as gender, race, and class

standing with relation to academic performance with in a Distance Education format as

opposed to a face-to-face (F2F) format is not apparent.

Geber (2000) provides a contemporary definition of distance education as any

formal approach to learning in which the majority of the instruction occurs while

educator and learner are at a distance from each other. This version represents earlier

definitions well (Moore, 1989) and keeps distance education relative to the technology

available and utilized at any one point in history. echnological improvements such as
LA CONSOLACION COLLEGE MANILA
13
Mendiola, Manila
SHS – HUMANITIES AND SOCIALSCIENCES STRAND

printing machines, postal services, telephone, radio, television, and more recently the

Internet, have been a driving force yielding new delivery methods and platforms. These

new learning methods used to deliver Distance Education are proliferating exponentially

in various learning programs, and leading some experts to predict that the “residential

based model,” in the form of students attending classes at prearranged times and

locations, will disappear in the near future (Blustain, Goldstein, and Lozier, 1999;

Drucker, 1997, as cited in O’Malley, 1999). Although an expensive option today, video

conferencing may create a virtual feeling that we are “back in the classroom.” Some

forms of Distance Education has progressed in concept and practice from an “anywhere,”

to an “anytime,” to an “any pace” delivery method. Based on these literature, we could

see both advantages and disadvantages of Online Learning as a substitute to Traditional

Classes. Numerous Barriers can simultaneously exist to the student’s learning especially

in Online

Classes such as Slow Internet Connection, Lack of Motivation, Complicated Activities,

Personal Problems, and Insufficient Limited Tech Experience.

Effects of Traditional Classes and Online Instructional Models on Students

Achievement Outcomes
LA CONSOLACION COLLEGE MANILA

Mendiola, Manila
SHS – HUMANITIES AND SOCIALSCIENCES STRAND

According to Vanessa Wren (2015), Effects of Traditional and Online

Instructional Models on Student Achievement Outcomes (Under the direction of Dr.

Clarence Holland) School of Education, July 2015. Although virtual education options

have rapidly expanded in recent years, little academic research has examined the

effectiveness of these courses. Furthermore, little research has been conducted at the

secondary school level for public school students. Policymakers and school leaders need

reliable research in order to make informed decisions about online learning and to

implement programs, which add value to the quality of instruction and provide students

with the support they need to be successful. The purpose of this study was to determine

the effects of instructional model on Student Achievement. Now that Online Classes is

now omnipresent in the Philippines due to the pandemic, teachers and students needs to

adjust drastically to this new style of set up. Researchers need reliable research that will

provide information if this kind of set up can improve the students’ learning. Which type

of set up is better than the other? What are the weaknesses of both set ups and how can

we improve it?

According to the international review of research in open and distance learning

(2007), In the fall of 2007, more than 17.9 million students were enrolled in degree-

granting. More than 3.9 million were enrolled in one or more online courses. Online

Enrollments represented 21.9% of total enrollments. Fromfall 2002 to fall 2007, online

enrollments grew at a compound annual growth rate of 19.7% from 1.6 million more than
LA CONSOLACION COLLEGE MANILA
15
Mendiola, Manila
SHS – HUMANITIES AND SOCIALSCIENCES STRAND

3.9 million (Allen & Seman, 2008). With the growth of online course enrollments,

questions have been asked about course completion and student performance in online

courses compared to traditional face-to-face courses. The problem this research will

address is that further evidence is needed regarding student success measures in online

instruction as opposed to classroom delivery.

Comparing Effectiveness of Online and Traditional Teaching Using Student’s

Final Grade and Performance in Class.

According to Ali Alghazo Department of Workforce Education & Development

Southern Illinois University of Carbondale (2010), stated the purpose of this study was to

examine the effectiveness of online education. Two sections of IST 483 were compared.

Comparison of the two sections was based on the students’ final letter grades. This study

was based on student’s final grades in the course as a measurement of the effectiveness of

the course delivery system. The purpose of the comparison was to test the effectiveness

of online education by reflecting on the traditional classroom education. If the student’s

final letter grades shows no significant difference, we can assume that online education is

as effective as traditional face-to-face classroom education. Given that in some

circumstances, researchers will based on the final grade of the students’. But in this

study,
LA CONSOLACION COLLEGE MANILA
16
Mendiola, Manila
SHS – HUMANITIES AND SOCIALSCIENCES STRAND

we base on both final grades and surveys that we will conduct to analyze and compare the

information if the students are really learning in both traditional and online class set up.

According to frontiers in Computer Science Research (2019), the advent of online

education has made it possible for students with busy lives and limited flexibility to

obtain a quality education. As opposed to traditional classroom teaching, Web-based

instructions have made it clear to offer classes worldwide through a single internet

connection. Although it boasts several advantages over traditional education, online

instruction still has its drawbacks, including limited communal synergies. Still, that

online education seems to be the path many students are taking to secure a degree.

Although this study compared the effectiveness and traditional instruction in an

environmental studies class. This study also has limitations, this examination was

conducted to provide an additional measure to determine if the students’ performance is

better in one environment over another (Mozes-Carmel and Gold, 2009). Moreover, the

results of this study will serve as a backbone for future analytical studies.

The Impact of E-Learning and Traditional Learning on Students’ Performance

and Attitude.

According to the original research paper (Dr. Nahid Khalil Elfaki, 2019).

Nowadays, learning is a process of achieving knowledge, skill, and performance. Thus,

learning is a ultimately considered of the fundamental pillars of society changes.

Technology has obviously made our lives easier. That means internet technology has
LA CONSOLACION COLLEGE MANILA
17
Mendiola, Manila
SHS – HUMANITIES AND SOCIALSCIENCES STRAND

been considered an important medium for many aspects of our lives including academic

learning. E-Learning or Online Learning has received much intention in recent years

globally, with an estimated 5-7 million students now are enrolling in at least one online

course each year. Many terms had had been used to describe learning that have delivered

online or via the internet, ranging from distance education. Additionally, that they

believed E-Learning has a positive impact on the academic achievements of students in

terms of reduces costs, saving time, and increases the accessibility of education as well as

enhances academic performance. (Oye et al and Keshavarz, 2019)

Effectiveness of an Online Classroom for Flexible Learning

According to the International Journal of Academic Multidisciplinary Research,

(2020). Eliademy as a web-based classroom is required one of the most excellent

conceivable elective devices and a great road for instructing and learning by which

instructors and learners can proceed their lessons indeed in the times of misfortune. This

was apparent by the lived encounters of the respondents. The study found out that

Eliademy was available, can advance time administration, expeditiousness and a

challenge for the clients. In spite of the fact that it requires solid web associations and

time influenced. There are other web-based classrooms wherein instructors and learners

can be associated with other than Eliademy. Instructors may select other instruments

depending on the learners since these stages have their claim specialties.

Comparing EFL Learners’ Responses In Online and Traditional Classes: A

Mixed Method Approach

According to Rithika & Selvaraj (2013), colossal development of social systems

has had a tall affect on the advancement of students’ learning and social lives. Social

systems have long been utilized for instructive purposes and analysts contend that

understudies are more curious about the online environment than conventional settings

for learning distinctive skills (Khodabandeh , 2018; Miyazoe & Anderson, 2010). A few

analysts accept that online settings are more supportive for learners than conventional one

(Khodabandeh, Alian & Soleimani, 2017). Utilizing portable innovation and social

systems have ended the portion of life of most understudies all around the world and it

has had an effect on the method of their learning (Wanger & Wilson, 2005).

The Impact of Online Homework on Class Productivity

According to Arasasingham, Martorell and McIntire (2011), online homework

can be locked in the students, display openings for self coordinated thoughts about to

memorize the required fabric, give compelling input and supply an extent of openings for
LA CONSOLACION COLLEGE MANILA
19
Mendiola, Manila
SHS – HUMANITIES AND SOCIALSCIENCES STRAND

home. In spite of all the potential natural and time saving benefits of utilizing web-based

homework, teachers are fundamentally inquisitive about the effect of online homework

on understudy execution. As online homework significantly impacts understudy

execution, this prescribed web-based strategy of collecting assignments can be utilized

inside the classroom, both for the natural and time sparing points of interest. As we are

given with increasingly mechanical devices inside the classroom, this data empowers

instructors all through the nation to utilize less paper and thus create less squander in and

out of the classroom, all without preventing understudy learning.

A Comparison of a Traditional Lecture-based and Online Supplemental Video

and Lecture-Based Approach in an Engineering Statics Class

According to Hamdan, McKnight & Arfstrom (2013), Understudies, especially in

STEM areas, are entrusted with learning an extremely huge sum of fabric in a short

amount of time. This may result in as it were lower levels of Bloom’s taxonomy being

gotten (information and comprehension) instead of higher levels of understanding

(application, assessment and creation/synthesis). Ruthven (2012) adequacy of utilizing

extra online materials in in fact troublesome courses such as mathematics. Understudies

are able to get to the fabric any time of the day or night. In expansion, course addresses

that were previously conveyed once within the classroom can be seen over and over once

more by understudies to acclimatize the material. Day et al. (2012) found mixed media
LA CONSOLACION COLLEGE MANILA
20
Mendiola, Manila
SHS – HUMANITIES AND SOCIALSCIENCES STRAND

instruction can be compelling in science as supplementary assets. According to Jordan,

Pakzad, and Oats (2010) understudies in designing ought to be “encouraged to grow their

information of the material being instructed through media, pictures, movement and

gushing audio/video” (p. 1). They note these materials have the capacity to reach more

understudies effectively. They conducted an in-depth overview of 20 building

understudies and 5 workforce. Generally, respondents felt those who go to a conventional

lesson setting do way better than those who go to the class.

Student Evaluations of Faculty Revisited: Online Versus Traditional Methods

According to Couper (2000) the issue of understudy assessment of educating

remains questionable with blend discoveries. The focal points of online over conventional

in-class, paper strategies incorporate reduced costs, ease of coming to agent tests, the

ability to approve information amid collection, and fast spread of comes about. Also,

bookkeeping chairmen found a measurably converse relationship between the weight

given the assessments and the accentuation placed on educating (Perused, Rama, &

Raghunandan, 2001). Be that as it may, a few directors are concerned that the misuse of

assessments may result in staff individuals locked in various exercises planned

particularly to influence student ratings on educating assessments, instead of to progress

instruction (Simpson & Siguaw, 2000). In expansion, faculty may be concerned that the

assessments don't precisely reflect their instructing aptitudes. On the other hand, Hobson
LA CONSOLACION COLLEGE MANILA
21
Mendiola, Manila
SHS – HUMANITIES AND SOCIALSCIENCES STRAND

and Talbot (2001) concluded that well-developed student evaluations with satisfactory

information may give a few of the best measures of teaching effectiveness. In any case,

the question remains as to the finest strategy of getting understudy assessments to get

substantial and dependable information.

This paper is intended to investigate the degree to which interaction and other

predictors contribute to student satisfaction in online learning settings. This was a

preliminary study towards a dissertation work which involved the establishment of

interaction and satisfaction scales through a content validity survey. Regression analysis

was performed to determine the contribution of predictor variables to student satisfaction.

The effects of student background variables on predictors were explored. The results

showed that learner-instructor interaction, learner-content interaction, and Internet self-

efficacy were good predictors of student satisfaction while interactions among students

and self-regulated learning did not contribute to student satisfaction. Learner-content

interaction explained the largest unique variance in student satisfaction. Additionally,

gender, class level, and time spent online per week seemed to have influence on learner-

learner interaction, Internet self-efficacy, and self-regulation.

Learning style and effectiveness of online class and face-to-face class instruction
LA CONSOLACION COLLEGE MANILA

SHS – HUMANITIES AND SOCIALSCIENCES STRAND

This study the investigator compared two sections of the same course-one section

was online and asynchronous; the other was face-to-face-by examining gender, age,

learning preferences and styles, media familiarity, effectiveness of tasks, course

effectiveness, test grades, and final grades. The two sections were taught by the same

instructor and used the same instructional materials. The results revealed no significant

differences in test scores, assignments, participation grades, and final grades, although

the online group's averages were slightly higher. Ninety-six percent of the online students

found the course to be either as effective or more effective to their learning than their

typical face-to-face course. There were no significant differences between learning

preferences and styles and grades in either group. The study showed that equivalent

learning activities can be equally effective for online and face-to-face learners.

Online versus traditional face-to-face learning in a large introductory course

Nearly two million college students were enrolled in online courses in fall 2003, a

19% increase from 2002, with significant growth expected to continue (Allen & Seaman,

2004). Russell (1999) found no significant differences between the effectiveness of

distance education and that of face-to-face classes in 355 comparison studies.

Classroom questioning with immediate electronic response: Do clickers improve

learning?

A number of studies have focused on how students and instructors feel about

digital learning technologies. This research is focused on the substantive difference in

learning outcomes between traditional classrooms and classrooms using clickers. A

randomized block experimental design involving four sections of undergraduate

Operations Management classes was used to determine if clicker systems increase student

learning of both quantitative and conceptual material in Operations Management.

Learning was measured using the difference between the scores on an entrance

examination and the final examination. The findings of this research provide evidence

that the use of immediate feedback using a technology like clickers can have a positive

impact on student learning as measured by test scores.

NNOSIGHT introduCtion the growth of online learning in the K–12 sector is

occurring both remotely through virtual schools and on campuses through blended

learning. In emerging fields, definitions are important because they create a shared

language that enables people to talk about the new phenomena. The following blended-

learning taxonomy and definitions expand upon and refine our previous work in helping

to create a shared language for the K–12 blended-learning sector. In our report titled,“The

rise of K–12 blended learning,” we observed that there were six main blended-learning
LA CONSOLACION COLLEGE MANILA
24
Mendiola, Manila
SHS – HUMANITIES AND SOCIALSCIENCES STRAND

models emerging in the sector from the perspective of the student. This paper introduces

a number of changes to that taxonomy based on feedback from the field and the need to

update the research to keep pace with new innovations that are occurring in blended

learning. Most importantly, the paper eliminates two of the six blended-learning models

—Faceto-Face Driver and Online Lab—because they appear to duplicate other models

and make the categorization scheme too rigid to accommodate the diversity of blended-

learning models in practice. By moving from six to four overarching models, we have

created more breathing room in the definitions. We hope these new models will better

describe the majority of programs so that nearly all blended-learning programs will fit

comfortably within one of the four. Appendix A explains the differences between the new

four-model taxonomy and the old six-model taxonomy in greater detail.

Blended Learning: The Convergence of Online and Face-to-Face Education.

Promising Practices in Online Learning.

Online learning within K-12 education is increasing access and equity by making

high quality courses and highly qualified teachers available to students. Online learning

programs offer courses, academic credits and support toward a diploma. They vary in

structure, and may be managed by a state, district, university, charter school, not-for-

profit, for-profit, or other institution. Thirty states and more than half of the school

districts in the United States offer online courses and services, and online learning is
LA CONSOLACION COLLEGE MANILA

Mendiola, Manila
SHS – HUMANITIES AND SOCIALSCIENCES STRAND

growing rapidly, at 30% annually. This growth is meeting demand among students, as

more than 40% of high school and middle school students have expressed interest in

taking an online course.

The most well established K-12 online learning programs are more than ten years

old, and many programs have between five and ten years of operating experience. The

newest programs are building on the expertise of those early adopters, as well as the

experience of online learning in postsecondary institutions and the corporate world. A

body of knowledge, skills and practices has been developed by individual programs, in

collaboration with practitioners, researchers, and policymakers. Because there are so

many types of online programs (full-time, supplemental, stateled, district-level,

consortium), there are also many different approaches to teaching, student support,

professional development, and other issues.

"Effects of E-learning on Students' Motivation"

Through millennia our educational system have developed for the past few years

it enhance our better understanding of our world. E-learning has attempted to improve the

way we educate in order to make it more successful and realistic. In the educational

setting, E-learning is a great way for teachers and students to obtain better knowledge

within ourselves, it enhances a student's learning when it comes in education field. E-

Learning is quickly being the most popular method of imparting knowledge to people of

all ages. However, since it is still relatively new, the concept is constantly changing and

evolving. According to (Harandi, 2015), "E-learning can refer to different learning

settings, In this paper we use e-learning to allude to almost any learning environment in

which electronic media, like computers, are utilized as a piece of an educational delivery

system. These can extend from using Email to complement print-based materials spread

at a distance to courses that are delivered entirely by means of technology like computers

or the World Wide Web." This research refers that every student can still access

knowledge any learning settings that their intelligence can be further expand. Students

learn in a variety of ways, including through e-learning. You can access a flexible system

that can improve your understanding in any courses.

E-learning is a highly effective method of online teaching and learning processes.

The resources are accessible at any time and from any location. It will let you learn in a

different way not just in the traditional classroom. Dr. Nidhi Pandey (2014), "Elearning

also offers individualized instruction, which print media cannot provide, and instructorled

courses allow clumsily and at great cost. In conjunction with assessing needs, elearning

can target specific needs. And by using learning style tests, elearning can locate and

target individual learning preferences." This indicates that e-learning is inhance than

printed media has to offer in are community and this way it improves are developing

system in community and technological advances.

Synthesis

The finding of the study synthesizes here are highly relevant to the research idea.

It compromises the difference between traditional and online classes set up of senior high

school student's academic performance. Whereas student engagement in their academic

performance, on how hard they are to have an excellent academic performance since the

online class started. The relationship between traditional and online class setup to the

students' academic performance engagement can also be the reason for their poor

academic performance. The traditional and online class setup possesses strengths and

weaknesses in terms of students' academic performances in their class.

The presence of every student's academic performance plays a significant role in

the enlightenment of their academic excellence. Even though this ponder compared the

viability and conventional instruction in a natural considers course. This considers too

has confinements. This examination remained conducted to supply an extra degree to

decide if the students’ execution is superior in one environment (Mozes-Carmel and

Gold, 2009). Also, the comes about of this consider will serve as a spine for future

explanatory considers.

Concurring to the first term paper (Dr. Nahid Khalil Elfaki, 2019). These days,

learning could be a process of accomplishing information, ability, and execution. In this

way, learning could be finally considered of the essential columns of society changes.

Innovation has made our lives less demanding. Meaning web innovation has been

considered a critical medium for our lives' numerous viewpoints, counting scholastic

learning. E-Learning or Online Learning has gotten much purposeful in later a long time

all-inclusive, with an evaluated 5-7 million understudies presently are selecting in at

slightest one online course each year.

The study's results, as summarized here, are extremely important. It undermines

the academic success of senior high school students by bridging the gap between

conventional and online classes.

In this research, the investigator looked at gender, age, learning habits and styles,

media familiarity, task effectiveness, course effectiveness, test grades, and final grades to

compare two parts of the same course—one was online and asynchronous, and the other

was face-to-face. The link between traditional and online class setup and students'

academic performance engagement may also be a factor in their poor academic

performance.

On the other hand, Hobson

and Talbot

There are two forms of learning: online classes and conventional classes. They

both appeal to almost the same type of education and have high-quality instruction. You

will also have instructors, and you will be following course outlines for the lessons as

well as tests.

Traditional classes are preferred by most people over online classes because you

will not only research and learn from the teacher's conversation, but you will also learn

how to socialize with other people. You may also gain interest by mixing with various

types of people. You may also gain interest by mixing with various types of people. You

may also participate in a variety of physical activities and form strong bonds with your

classmates. Socializing with others is restricted in online classes. During class, your

teacher will be the only person with whom you will converse. However, this year's two

learning environments differ in terms of adaptability, connection, interaction, mode of

learning, and learning skills. It was stated that traditional education is more valuable than

online learning.

Theoretical Framework

Figure 1. The Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy

The Taxonomy of Educational Objectives, known as Bloom's Taxonomy

(Bloom, Engelhart, Furst, & Krathwohl, 1956) is one of the most recognized learning

theories in the field of education. Educators often use Bloom's Taxonomy to create

learning outcomes that target not only subject matter but also the depth of learning they

want students to achieve, and to then create assessments that accurately report on

students’ progress towards these outcomes (Anderson & Krathwohl, 2001).

LA CONSOLACION COLLEGE MANILA

SHS – HUMANITIES AND SOCIALSCIENCES STRAND

The researchers used The Taxonomy of Educational Objectives also known as

”The Bloom’s Taxonomy.” created by Benjamin Bloom (1956). That was later revised

by David Kratwohl and Lorin Anderson in 2001. Anderson and Kratwohl (2001) stated

Educators often use Bloom's Taxonomy to create learning outcomes that target not only

subject matter but also the depth of learning they want students to achieve, and to then

create assessments that accurately report on students’ progress towards these outcomes.

The Bloom’s Taxonomy comprises the three learning domains which are: The Cognitive,
LA CONSOLACION COLLEGE MANILA
32
Mendiola, Manila
SHS – HUMANITIES AND SOCIALSCIENCES STRAND

Affective, and Psychomotor, and assigns to each of these domains a hierarchy that

represents to different levels of learning. This theory is often used by most Educators in

order to create a learning outcome that they will expect from the students. This will give

them new perspectives in order to enhance their teaching skills and then evaluate if the

students understand the lecture from the teacher.

The researchers will use six levels of Blooms’s Taxonomy where each element

will represent the students’ critical thinking skills and as researchers we shall test them if

all 6 levels are present on both set ups and which set up is proven more effective to the

student’s learning. Each level will represent if the student is learning from their activities,

lectures, modules, and sessions both on Traditional Class and Online Class setup. The

following levels shall be explained one by one in order for the researcher to gain

knowledge on the different classifications that were used on Blooms’s Taxonomy:

Remembering

According to Anderson & Krathwohl (2001) they stated that in this level is about

retrieving, recognizing, and recalling relevant knowledge from long term memory.

Understanding

According to Anderson & Krathwohl (2001) they stated that in this level is about

constructing meaning from oral, written, and graphic messages through interpreting,

exemplifying, classifying, summarizing, inferring, comparing and explaining.

LA CONSOLACION COLLEGE MANILA
33
Mendiola, Manila
SHS – HUMANITIES AND SOCIALSCIENCES STRAND

Applying

According to Anderson & Krathwohl (2001) they stated that in this level is about

carrying out or using a procedure through executing, or implementing.

Analyzing

According to Anderson & Krathwohl (2001) they stated that in this level is about

breaking material into constituent parts, determining how the parts relate to one another

and to an overall structure or purpose through differentiating, organizing, attributing.

Evaluating

According to Anderson & Krathwohl (2001) they stated that in this level is about

making judgements based on criteria and standards through checking and critiquing.

Creating

According to Anderson & Krathwohl (2001) they stated that in this level is about

putting elements together to form a coherent or functional whole; reorganizing elements

into a new pattern or structure through generating, planning, or producing.

The reason why the researchers used this theory is to evaluate if there were

significant differences to the academic performance of the students between Online Class

Setup and Traditional Class Setup. The researchers will evaluate the students’ Thinking

skills, Memory skills, Creativity skills, and Communication skills. The theory will be the

base of this study for this will strengthen the researchers’ objectives in finding the

strengths and weaknesses of Traditional Setup and Online Setup to the students’

academic performance.

Conceptual Framework

The model shows that the factors that can influence a junior high school student’s

choice for a senior high school academic track such self-interest, parents’ influence,

financial status, and peer influence. Furthermore, the chosen academic track of the

respondents for their senior high school academic track influenced by the academic track

choice factors.

Research Methodology

This chapter provides a discussion about the scope of cosmetic products. In

research methodology, includes the research design, research locale, participants,

sampling technique, research instrument, data gathering procedure, and method of data

analysis.

Research Design

The mixed method research is applied in this study to easily investigate students’

perceptions on La Consolacion College Manila towards the difference of Traditional

Learnig and Online Learning set-up and how it affect the student performance. This study

practices the said method in order to analyze both quantitative and qualitative as a

combination to collect and analyze data (Shorten, & Smith 2017). In choosing a research

deisgn for the mixed method, there are 4 types that should be considered: 1.)

triangulation, 2.) embedded, 3.) explanatory, 4.) exploratory (Teddlie and Tashakkori

2009). The current study will mostly apply the characteristics of explanatory model, with

this approach it will begin with the collection and analysis of quantitative data then

followed by the qualitative to futher strengthen and back up the interpretation of the data

gathered in a quantitative way.

Research methods that are suitable for the subject matter and set up their studies

up for success, since we are under the Mixed Method which requires both design for

qualitative and quantitative method. In a qualitative manner we use the phenomenological

method for this study. This will greatly explain how the given problem or scenario will

likely to be explored and analyze to help the researchers to examine how this individual's

lived situations will help answer and prove the given variables. On the method of

quantitative, the given research design, correlation method, will be utilize to help us

identify and corelate in order to clearly state how the given dependent variable is related

to the independent variable.

Research Locale

The study was conducted at La Consolacion College Manila, this place was

selected for knowing the efficiency of the study to determine the difference between

Traditional and Online Class Setup to the academic performance of the students of

LCCM. This study was been implemented to be exact on Senior High School students of

La Consolacion College Manila. This study shows thae differences between Traditional

and Online Class Setup to the acdemic performance of the students. The research study

was implemented inside the premises of La Consolacion College Manila through an on

online website or online link we made. and We improve the appropriateness of the study

to determine the difference between traditional online class setup to academic

performance of senior high school students at La Consolacion College Manila. This

research study was conducted inside of the premises of La Consolacion College Manila

through an online site we managed to create, and it shows that there are disparities among

both traditional and online learning setups throughout students’ academic performance in

Senior High School at LCCM.

Participants

The study's target participants are selected Grade 12 students of La Consolacion

College – Manila with different strands. The researchers used students from one section

of each strand as participants, specifically: Grade 12 - Bl. Gratia from HUMSS strand,

Grade 12 - St. Evodius of STEM strand, Grade 12 - St. Boniface of ABM strand, Grade

12 - Bl. Helen of HE strand, and Grade 12 - Bl. Avelino of ICT strand of La Consolacion

College – Manila and are currently enrolled for the Academic Year 2020 - 2021.

The researchers opted to choose Grade 12 students from different strands as their

respondents because the researchers believed that the students have a different

backgrounds and opinions during Traditional and Online Classes. The researchers also

believed that this would also give them diverse data and different information to achieve

their hypothesis..

The population of the respondents is presented at the table below:

Sampling Technique

The researchers used non-probability sampling for this study, mainly haphazard

sampling. In this method, participants that are being chosen by the researchers are the

ones who are accessible or easy to locate and are willing to manifest contact with the

researchers. Haphazard sampling is a sampling method where the first available primary

data source would be used for research purposes without additional requirements. In

other words, this sampling approach means getting participants anywhere they can be

found, and ideally wherever they are convenient. Given that this study is being

established in the midst of a pandemic, this sampling will be benefiting both the

researchers and the respondents. Also due to the fact that there are some students who are

experiencing slow internet connection and busy schedule, the researchers decided to
LA CONSOLACION COLLEGE MANILA
42
Mendiola, Manila
SHS – HUMANITIES AND SOCIALSCIENCES STRAND

choose students who are willing to answer the surveys that the researcher will provide.

Research Instruments

The researchers used questioners or survey to inquire the answers of Grade 12 students

from La Consolacion College Manila. Within the begin with portion you'll discover the

data around the respondents. The moment portion alludes to how they're coping up in this

time of widespread pandemic, whereas the final portion bargains with what they're

feeling and the changes in their behavior in the amid widespread pandemic. The

researchers included answer choices as well as checkboxes that might be chosen by the

respondents. Researchers have also assembled pertinent considers on the subject being

researched. In common, the survey or study served as the instrument of the research, as

well as the studies related to this point, to accumulate information or data of the

respondents within the improvement of this research.

Data Gathering Procedure

LA CONSOLACION COLLEGE MANILA
43
Mendiola, Manila
SHS – HUMANITIES AND SOCIALSCIENCES STRAND

The researchers through the following step-by-step procedure in gathering the

data essential to the study:

Before conducting the survey, the researchers asked permission for the Office of

the Principal’s approval. The data gathering will be conducted in the Basic Education

Department - Senior High school level, specifically among the chosen section from

different strands which are BL. Gratia (HUMSS), St. Evodius (STEM), St. Boniface

(ABM), Bl. Avelino (ICT), and Bl. Helen (HE) in La Consolacion College - Manila. A

letter will be hand over in the chosen section’s adviser to inform them that some students

of their class will be part of the research study.

Next, the researchers will use the Haphazard sampling because there are

numerous factors that some students are not available because they’re experiencing slow

internet connection which can definitely affect the requires result of the study. The

researchers will choose students that are willing and has good internet connection to

acquire the necessary information. All fo the procedures will be done by the means of

online process.

The questionnaire will be distributed to the chosen participants by the means of

Google Forms. The link of the form comprises the introduction covering the description

and purpose of data gathering. Ensuring the data privacy of each information identified

by the respondent will also be stated. Also, adequate instruction on how to properly

answer the questionnaire. The respondents will be given an hour to answer the survey.

After answering the survey, the researchers will then moved on to the interview by using
LA CONSOLACION COLLEGE MANILA
44
Mendiola, Manila
SHS – HUMANITIES AND SOCIALSCIENCES STRAND

the zoom without asking the respondents to open their cameras to save mobile data from

the respondents. The interview must only take 5 minutes from each respondent.

The researchers will then evaluate and record the answers of the respondents. Ll

data would be tallied and tabulated into standard forms. And will be analyzed,

interpreted, and statistically treated using a proper statistical tool.

Method of Data Analysis

The researchers will be using the following statistical tools to analyze the

gathered data from the questionnaire:

1. To answer the Part 1 of the survey, the questions will be presented in a 5 point

Likert Scale which the answers will be computed using the Frequency of Distribution of

the Descriptive Statistics. It will be used to determine how many students are

experiencing difficulties during Online Classes which class set up do they prefer most.

2. To answer the Part 2 of the survey, the researchers will conduct an interview

with series of open-ended questions connected to the Part 1 of the survey to further gain

more information and clarity from their questionnaire and those additional information

will also be computed using the Measure of Central Tendency of the Descriptive

Statistics.
