DTC recognition and display

The control module for steering column electronics is


equipped with on-board diagnostics, which simplifies
faultfinding.

Performing on-board diagnostics: Use the "Guided Fault


Finding" function of the Diagnostic Operation System VAS
5051 .

„ Release lever T10039 L

Steering column switch, removing

- Using either the electric or mechanical position adjuster,


move the steering wheel completely outward and down.

- Remove terminal clamps from the battery 27-3,

- Remove the bolts - arrows - .

- Lift the cover - arrow - , right, from the steering column


switch using the wedge T10039/1 and push it outward.

- The left cover is the mirror image of the right and is pried
off the steering wheel column switch using the wedge
T10039/1 and pushed outward.

Note:

„ Do not disassemble the covers.

- Move the upper cover - upper arrow - upward from the


steering column switch and pull it out.

- Move the lower cover - lower arrow - downward from


the steering column switch and pull it out.

- Remove Allen bolt - arrow - .

- Remove the steering column switch.

- Pull off the retaining clip of the wiring harness - arrow -


.

- Pull plug connectors - arrows - from the steering column


switch.

Installing:

Install in reverse order of removal, noting the following:

- Tighten the Allen bolt - arrow - using 1.5 Nm torque.

- Insert the lower steering column switch cover as shown -


arrows - .

- Install steering wheel

Disassembly

- Remove steering column switch 94-8, Steering column


switch, removing and installing .

- Remove both bolts - arrows - on the Tiptronic switch


bridge

- Remove both bolts - arrows - on the Tiptronic switches.

- Loosen the retainer - arrow - on the spiral spring multi-


connector - 1 - .

- Carefully set aside the holder - 2 - with the multi-


connector for Tiptronic - - 3 - .

- Loosen the retainer - arrows - on the right Tiptronic


switch bridge.

- Set the bridge with the right Tiptronic switch carefully


aside.

- Loosen the retainer - arrows - on the left Tiptronic


switch bridge and remove the entire Tiptronic switch.

- Carefully remove the airbag spiral spring with the


Steering Angle Sensor G85 from the steering column
switch.

- To remove the windshield wiper switch, remove the bolts


- 2- .

- Remove wiper switch.

- To remove the turn signal switch, remove the bolts - 1 -

- Remove turn signal switch.

- Remove Steering Column Electronic Systems Control


Module J527 from turn signal switch.

Assembly:

Assemble in reverse order, noting the following:

„ If the Steering Column Electronic Systems Control


Module J527 is replaced, the unit must be coded

„ Note the correct position of the leads within the


steering column switch.

J527 , coding

DTC recognition and display

The control module for steering column electronics is


equipped with on-board diagnostics, which simplifies
faultfinding.

Performing on-board diagnostics: Use the "Guided Fault


Finding" function of the Diagnostic Operation System VAS
5051 .

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

„ Diagnostic Operation System VAS 5051

„ Diagnostic cable VAS 5051/6A

Diagnostic Operation System VAS 5051 , attaching

- Apply parking brake.

- Place gear selector lever in "P" or "N" .

- Connect the Vehicle Diagnostic Testing and Information


System Diagnostic Operation System VAS 5051 with the
ignition switched off.

- Switch ignition on.

- Turn off all electrical consumers.

Note:

„ If 5051 display is blank Operating instructions for


Diagnostic Operation System VAS 5051 .

- Select "Guided Fault-Finding" on the Diagnostic


Operation System VAS 5051 .

- Select "Go To" , "Functions/Component Selection" and


the following menu options in sequence:

„ Body (Repair Group 01; 27; 50 to 97)

„ Electrical System (Repair Group 01; 27; 90 to 97)

„ 01 Systems capable of self-diagnosis

„ Steering wheel electronics

„ Steering wheel electronics functions

„ Coding control module steering wheel electronics
