INTRODUCTION:
Good communication skill is the objective of any language learning. It is important because the
learners of a language are able to understand what is being said and are able to express
themselves freely in that language.
Keeping in mind the students have to achieve the desired proficiency level, the teachers decide
to conduct Assessments of Listening and Speaking (ALS) for each and every student. In ALS, we
generally focus on four particular skills. They are:
1. Speaking Skill 3. Listening Skill
2. Reading Skill 4. Writing Skill
RECITATION:
The first step of any language learning process is recitation. It helps the students to develop
memorization skill. It is also important to learn new words and their meanings. Let’s look into
the poem mentioned below and recite it.
MY HEART LEAPS UP
BY
WILLIAM WORDSWORTH
My heart leaps up when I behold
A rainbow in the sky:
So was it when my life began;
So is it now I am a man;
So be it when I shall grow old,
Or let me die!
The Child is father of the Man;
And I could wish my days to be
Bound each to each by natural piety.
SUMMARY OF THE POEM:
When the poet sees the rainbow in the sky, his heart becomes extremely happy. The situation
was same when he was a child. He used to become happy when he saw rainbow in the sky.
The condition is still same in the present. Now the poet is an adult, but his heart still becomes
happy when he sees the rainbow. He wants his heart to be happy in future also in the same
way when he will see the rainbow. He also wishes to die if the happiness in his heart for the
rainbow doesn’t remain the same when he becomes old. He thinks that ‘the child is father of the
man’ because a child has all the qualities that makes him become a man in the future. So, the
poet wishes to worship and love the nature just like he did in his childhood days.
WORD MEANINGS:
1. Leaps: jump 4. Each to each: everyday
2. Behold: see; observe 5. Natural piety: something that is
3. Bound: enclose natural
Try reciting different poems whenever possible. It will strengthen your vocabulary as well as
your pronunciation skill.

POEM VS POEM COMPETITION:
Now, let’s try this activity with your classmates. First, select a partner. Together, you two as a pair
will select one poem each. Keep in mind that those poems should be out of your syllabus. For
example, let’s look into these two poems:
LEISURE
BY
W.H. DAVIES
What is this life if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.
No time to stand beneath the boughs
And stare as long as sheep or cows.
No time to see, when woods we pass,
Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.
No time to see, in broad daylight,
Streams full of stars like skies at night.
No time to turn at Beauty’s glance,
And watch her feet, how they can dance.
No time to wait till her mouth can
Enrich that smile her eyes began.
A poor life this if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.
STOPPING BY WOODS ON A SNOWY EVENING
BY
ROBERT FROST
Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.
He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep.
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.
Now, one by one those two students will recite the poems. Let the teacher decide whose
pronunciation is better. If needed, the teacher will tell how to improve it. In this way everyone will
take part in this activity. It is the first step of your Speaking Skill.
