In making definitions, correct grammar must be

observed. One of the common errors in writing is
the subject and verb agreement. Thus, today, we will
go back to establishing your correct use of grammar.

Precisely!

Subject-verb agreement is one of the key

components to form grammatically correct

guide in using the English language be it written or
spoken.

There are many rules in subject-verb agreement, but

today we will only focus on the three (3) rules which
are the agreement with plural-looking nouns,
relative pronouns and compound subjects.

First, let me discuss to you one of the subject-verb

agreement which is the plural-looking nouns.

Nouns that are plural in form but singular in

meaning agree with singular verbs.

Some examples of plural looking nouns are news,

statistics, politics, measles, mathematics, physics,
economics, civics etc.

parentheses.

nouns that are plural in form but singular in meaning
agree with singular verbs.
Now, let’s discuss the next rule on relative
pronouns.

When who, which, or that acts as a subject of a

subordinate clause, its verb will be singular or
plural, depending on the number of the
antecedent.

Class, the relative pronoun who is used for people,

and it agrees with the antecedent in terms of number
(singular or plural).
The relative pronoun which is used for things,
animals, or ideas, and it does not change based on
number.
The relative pronoun that is used for both people
and things, and it does not change based on number.
Let us check the answers of groups 2 and 5, their
task is to underline the correct relative pronouns in
the parentheses.

Let’s take a look at this sentence

compound subject.

Compound subjects connected by and takes the

simple form or plural form of the verb.
