Florence Price was an African-American composer, pianist and music teacher. She gave her first solo piano recital at the age of 4, and her first
composition was published when she was 11. She studied at the New England Conservatory in Boston and later became head of the music
department at Clark University, Atlanta.
In ‘A Morning Sunbeam’, the first phrase of the melody is in long notes (bars 1–4), whereas the second phrase is divided between the hands
(bars 5–8). For the middle section (bars 17–32) the key changes from G major to C major, and the melody (now varied) moves to the left hand.
Although the composer’s metronome mark is h. = 69, students may prefer a more relaxed tempo, such as h. = c.63.
