CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

A. Background
There are some reasons why studying a foreign language such as English
becomes so essential even since at Elementary School in this technology and global
era. First, Kalra (2015) states that a global language is a language that has got a
large number of speakers in all over the world. It is a language which is learned by
many people as a second or foreign language. Next, Pinter (2008) says that language
is a system to communicate and therefore the purpose of learning a foreign language
such as English Language is mostly used for communication. The statements above
are supported by Patel and Jain (2008) that the primary functions of language are
communications, self-expression and thinking. The expression of feeling and
meaning becomes more exact. The process of speaking fluently and effectively is a
big challenge of all language learners. In a certain situation, fluent speakers also
require to learn how to manage conversation, speak and think at the same time.
Since English becomes a foreign language in Indonesia, it is needed to have
such kind of strategy to learn this language. English has four basic skills which are
listening, speaking, reading, and writing that to be mastered. Listening and reading
are considered as receptive skills while speaking and writing are productive skills
(Harmer, 1989). Speaking is considered as productive skill, none can deny that
active classroom participation plays important role in the success of language
learning, Tatar in Tamara Andrea (2014: 19). It means that Students who active
more in speaking get better in their spoken language. So, speaking is very important
to learn in every school. But to make us become a good speaker it needs more self-
confidence in order to make communication with the other people, when someone
is speaking to us, they are not only passing on information, they are also doing of
their strength of belief of the validity of that information.
Self-confidence is the most important aspect that everyone should have.
With confidence we can more easily communicate with others, and can make easier
for us to do our work. Without self-confidence, the students may not have the
courage to speak to people. Speaking to other people is an activity that can give

1
someone a high degree of self-confidence. Self-confidence according to Salim
(2015) concept of self-confidence relates to self in one’s personal judgement,
ability, power, etc. sometimes manifested excessively, it means that self-confidence
is important. Without self-confidence, we cannot get knowledge. If people have
self-confidence, their knowledge will be wider, people are going to be getting so
much information from the things that people read, and people get something. In
other words, we can conclude that self-confidence is important in our life. Con
sequently, everybody especially students should possess this skill well.
From the statements above, for the researcher, this condition is so interesting
and appropriate to be observed. Students in this era learn English not only in their
class but also in their life activities. researcher found that so many students
especially in private school look confident when they are speaking English with
their teachers or friends. They always performed some academic speaking skills
such as giving an oral presentation, discussion the topics that need a broader range
of vocabulary knowledge, reading an English text, telling a story and doing
conversation with native speaker on live.
Knowing the issues about students’ self-confidence speaking English gives
the reason for the researcher to investigate. The observation focuses on what types
of self-confidence, what aspects of self-confidence and what factors of self-
confidence that make the students brave to speak English in their class. This is
worked out to help students, techers, parents and others in understanding and
knowing what is the characteristics that students feel confident when they are
speaking English. Eventually, the study that would be worked out is entitled “The
Students’ Self-Confidence in Speaking Skill of English Language Education in
Elementary School”.

C. Aim of Study
 To determine types of self-confidence toward Students analysis.
 To know what aspects of self-confidence that students feel confident
in speaking skill.
 To know what factors of self-confidence that students feel confident
in speaking skill.

D. Uses of Study

caharacteristics of students’ self - confidence in speaking skill.
 For researcher is to be able to add insight and direct experience on
how to determine and to know the characteristics of students ‘s self-
confidence in speaking skill.
 For Teachers is to be able to add knowledge and contribute ideas
about how to develop speaking skill throught students’ self-
confidence.
 For school as material for consideration in preparing learning
program in speaking skill of English language education.

E. Framework of Mind
Speaking is considered as productive skill, none can deny that active
classroom participation plays important role in the success of language learning,
Tatar in Tamara Andrea (2014: 19). It means that Students who active more in
speaking get better in their spoken language. So, speaking is very important to learn
in every school. But to make us become a good speaker it needs more self-

3
confidence in order to make communication with the other people, when someone
is speaking to us, they are not only passing on information, they are also doing of
their strength of belief of the validity of that information.
Students’ self-confidence can be reffered to as students being comfortable
communicating or expressing opinions to teachers, parents, or other friends without
fear of making mistakes. According to Ningsi (2020), self-confidence can follow
lessons well, express opinions, and are willing to accept other people’s opinion with
a positive attitude. Moreover, Gael Lindelfield explained that there are two types of
self-confidence namely born confidence and inner confidence. Beside two types of
self-confidence according to Lauster (Gufron, 2010), suggests the following aspects
of self-confidence. There are some aspects of self-confidence. In the other side,
there are some factors of self confidence too. These characteristics have criteria and
indicator itself. This will be presented in the chapter two.
Based definition above, the researcher focuses on the three components and
will take data by asking students. So, the researcher can determine and know about
the chacateristic of students’ self-confidence in speaking skill of English language
education. from the statements above, the frame will be clearly described by the
scheme below:

F. Research Methodology
The study is basically using qualitative methodology that considers suitable
with the point of the research. According to Sugiyono (2007:9) that qualitative
methodology is a research methodology resting on post positivism philosophy, used
for observing the natural setting, where the researcher is a main instrument, using
triangulation collecting data, having inductive data analysis and the research result
is a meaning, no generalization. Meanwhile, Bogdan and Taylor, as quoted in
Melong (2006:4) and quoted again by Mufti in his paper (2006:10) who consider
that qualitative methodology is a research procedure pursuing description about
something; written, oral or behavior data that could be observed. Beside that, it is
not used to examine some hypothesis but it is just worked to describe the facts in
its way.
Based on definition above, it is clear that this research just focuses to
determine and to know about the characteristics of students’ self-behavior in
speaking skill, not to examine some hypothesis.

1. Source of Data
 The research site used to get some additional information is SD
Labschool UPI Cibiru Bandung city because the school where
the Researcher teaching.
 The subject of the research is 6th grade students
2. Collecting Data
Questionair
The writer will make questionair to the students. Generally, all questions
are focused on their feelings when speaking English.
Interview
This is conducted to get supported data by asking some questions to
students about their feelings during speaking English.
Observation
This is done to observe what the things happen, when speaking session
begin in English class.
