Grade 1. It’s believed that a student stands a higher chance of getting a well-paid job if he or she is fluent
in both written and spoken English. So, I’m trying my best to be good at it. I often learn this language by
going over textbooks, watching English television programs with subtitles and looking for information
online.
Kerubo: Kenya’s official languages are English and Swahili. English is the official language used by the
government in laws, higher education, and other aspects. We started to use English when English-
speaking people first came to our country in the 19th century. My plan is to find a job in urban areas, so I
am learning to communicate fluently in English.
David: As a Canadian citizen, English is my first language, also known as my mother tongue. It is one of
the two official languages in Canada. The country emphasizes bilingualism, which means we are
proficient in both French and English. But, we have more than one variety of English. English can vary in
grammar structures, vocabulary, and accents between regions.

Listening script:
Amy: Hi, James. How’s it going?
James: Not very well. I have some difficulties learning English at school.
Amy: What’s the matter?
James: Reading and Writing skills are fine. I have no trouble with the grammar structures. But I can’t
get the new vocabulary in my head. I just can’t memorize the words.
Amy: How do you usually study new words?
James: I note them down, look them up in the dictionary, and make a goal of studying 10 new words
a day.
Amy: How do you feel about that method?
James: The good thing about it is I have a clear goal in my head, so I know what I should do every
day. But it doesn’t seem to work. There are always so many words with different meanings and uses.
Amy: Do you want to know how I learn new vocabulary?
James: Sure.
Amy: Setting a goal is great, but I want every new word to be a joy.
James: How do you do that?
Amy: I use my imagination to make the words meaningful to me. I often give my own examples so
that I can remember the meaning and how to use those words. Sometimes I even create a story to
use all the learnt vocabulary. So, when I see a new word, I think of the example or the story that goes
with it to remember what it means.
James: I’ve never thought learning new words can be fun. I’ll give it a try. Thanks for the advice, Amy.
Amy: You’re welcome, James. Glad I can help.
